This short review describes the progress which is being made towards the self-assembly of mechanically-linked polymers. The coordination-driven self-assembly of organometallic half-sandwich iridium(III)- and rhodium(III)-based building blocks with asymmetric ambidentate pyridyl-carboxylate ligands is described. Despite the potential for obtaining a statistical mixture of multiple products, D2 symmetric octanuclear cages were formed selectively by taking advantage of the electronic effects emanating from the two types of chelating sites – (O,O’) and (N,N’) – on the tetranuclear building blocks. The metal sources and the lengths of bridging ligands influence the selectivity of the self-assembly. Experimental observations, supported by computational studies, suggest that the D2 symmetric cages are the thermodynamically favored products. Overall, the results underline the importance of electronic effects on the selectivity of coordination-driven self-assembly, and demonstrate that asymmetric ambidentate ligands can be used to control the design of discrete supramolecular coordination complexes. 相似文献

We have designed, synthesized, and investigated a self-assembling supramolecular system which mimics, at a molecular level, the function performed by a macroscopic electrical extension cable. The system is made up of three components, 12+, 2-H3+, and 3. Component 12+ consists of two moieties: a [Ru(bpy)3]2+ unit, which plays the role of an electron donor under light excitation, and a DB24C8 crown ether, which fulfills the function of a socket. The wire-type component 2-H3+ is also composed of two moieties, a secondary dialkylammonium-ion center and a bipyridinium unit, which thread into the DB24C8 crown-ether socket of 12+ and the 1/5DN38C10 crown-ether socket 3, respectively. The photochemical, photophysical, and electrochemical properties of the three separated components, of the 12+ superset 2-H3+ and 2-H3+ subset 3 dyads, and of the 12+ superset 2-H3+ subset 3 triad have been investigated in CH2Cl2 solution containing 2% MeCN. Reversible connection/disconnection of the two plug/socket systems can be controlled independently by acid/base and redox stimulation. The behavior of the various different dyads and triad has been monitored by light absorption and emission spectroscopies, as well as by electrochemical techniques. In the fully connected 12+ superset 2-H3+ subset 3 triad, light excitation of the [Ru(bpy)3]2+ unit of component 12+ is followed by electron transfer (k = 2.8 x 108 s-1) to the bipyridinium unit of component 2-H3+, which is plugged into component 3. The dynamics of bistable oscillators driven by periodic dichotomous noise is described. The stochastic differential equation governing the flow implies smooth trajectories between noise switching events. The dynamics of the two-branched map induced by this flow is a Markov process. Harmonic and quartic models of the bistable potential are studied in the overdamped limit. In the linear (harmonic) case the dynamics can be reduced to a stochastic one-dimensional map with two branches. The moments decay exponentially in this case, although the invariant measure may be multifractal. For strong damping, relaxation induces a cascade leading to a Cantor set and anomalous decay of the density in this case is modeled by a Markov chain. For the physically more realistic case of a quartic potential many additional features arise since the contraction factor is distance dependent. By tuning the barrier-height parameter in the quartic potential, noise-induced transition rates with the characteristics of intermittency are found. 相似文献
