An equation of motion for a cavitating gas bubble immersed in a liquid is introduced which includes a flexoelectric energy
term. This energy is deduced from the electric field produced by the bubble wall acceleration (pressure gradient) in the fluid
(the flexoelectric effect). We show that under conditions of sonoluminescence, this electric field reaches values typical
of the electric breakdown field in water. Our theoretical results are consistent with the duration of light emission, minimum
bubble radius, and energy release as measured in sonoluminescence experiments in water.

Amorphous titanium dioxide monoliths doped with brilliant green (BG) were synthesized by the sol-gel process. The optical
properties of the monoliths were characterized by Photoacoustic Spectroscopy and Photoluminescence Spectroscopy. The absorption
spectra for the BG-doped TiO2 monoliths exhibited two well defined absorption regions: a band below 400 nm corresponding to TiO2 absorption and three absorption bands centered at 424 nm, 588 nm, and 632 nm due to brilliant green. While the undoped TiO2 monoliths showed no luminescence, the doped samples showed a strong luminescence band at 673 nm, which increased its intensity

We experimentally demonstrate a low-loss multilayered metamaterial exhibiting a double-negative refractive index in the visible spectral range. To this end, we exploit a second-order magnetic resonance of the so-called fishnet structure. The low-loss nature of the employed magnetic resonance, together with the effect of the interacting adjacent layers, results in a figure of merit as high as 3.34. The Hamiltonian limit of the ANNNI model in (1+1) dimensions is studied by using the Quantum Statistical Monte Carlo method. Even if recent results suggest that Monte Carlo calculations may prove unreliable in the study of this system, the phase diagram of the quantum version of the model was successfully obtained. Absolute line intensities and self-broadening coefficients have been measured at 197° and 294°K for the 201II ← 000 band of 12C16O2 at about 4978cm-1. The vibration-rotation factor (FVR), the purely vibrational transition moment (∣R(O)∣), and the integrated band intensity (Sband) are deduced from the measurements. The results are: FVR(m)=1+(0.24±0.08)x10-4m+(0.55+0.21)x10-4m2, ∣R(O)∣= (4.340±0.008x10-3 debye, Sband=96372±190cm-1km-1atm-1STP. The efficient combination of directions is a significant problem in line search methods that either use negative curvature,
or wish to include additional information such as the gradient or different approximations to the Newton direction.
In this paper we describe a new procedure to combine several of these directions within an interior-point primal-dual algorithm.
Basically, we combine in an efficient manner a modified Newton direction with the gradient of a merit function and a direction
of negative curvature, if it exists. We also show that the procedure is well-defined, and it has reasonable theoretical properties
regarding the rate of convergence of the method.
We also present numerical results from an implementation of the proposed algorithm on a set of small test problems from the
CUTE collection.
