Since the introduction of ceramic‐on‐ceramic couplings in total hip arthroplasty, continuous efforts have been performed to improve the performance of the prosthetic components. To expand the applications of ceramics, in 2000 an innovative alumina–zirconia composite was introduced in the market. The present study represents the first investigation aimed at characterising at the molecular level Biolox® delta retrievals implanted between 1999 and 2009. Fluorescence and Raman results showed that a progressive improvement of the material properties has occurred in the period between 1999 and 2009. Raman spectroscopy showed that wear was the main cause of the in vivo tetragonal‐to‐monoclinic zirconia transformation. Our findings validated the in vitro accelerated ageing protocols proposed in the literature to simulate the effects of the in vivo wear, because the mechanism operating in vivo was found to be the same active in vitro. The in vitro fracture of a new femoral head appeared to be an extreme wear condition that determined the most significant changes in the residual stress state and monoclinic content both in the section of the fragments and on their surface. The micro‐Raman mapping of the fractured articulating surface showed that the tetragonal‐to‐monoclinic transformation involved a region much more extended than as reported in the literature. There is a need to better understand the effect of temperature changes on the response of ultrasonic guided-wave pitch-catch systems used for structural health monitoring. A model is proposed to account for all relevant temperature-dependent parameters of a pitch-catch system on an isotropic plate, including the actuator-plate and plate-sensor interactions through shear-lag behavior, the piezoelectric and dielectric permittivity properties of the transducers, and the Lamb wave dispersion properties of the substrate plate. The model is used to predict the S(0) and A(0) response spectra in aluminum plates for the temperature range of -40-+60 degrees C, which accounts for normal aircraft operations. The transducers examined are monolithic PZT-5A [PZT denotes Pb(Zr-Ti)O3] patches and flexible macrofiber composite type P1 patches. The study shows substantial changes in Lamb wave amplitude response caused solely by temperature excursions. It is also shown that, for the transducers considered, the response amplitude changes follow two opposite trends below and above ambient temperature (20 degrees C), respectively. These results can provide a basis for the compensation of temperature effects in guided-wave damage detection systems. 相似文献

Composite MnOx CeOx catalysts (Mnat: Ceat = 1) synthesized via the redox and coprecipitation routes were comparatively characterized by micro‐Raman spectroscopy using a laser irradiation power ranging between 0.6 and 4.2 mW. A quasi‐molecular dispersion of the oxide species determines a major and irreversible structural rearrangement of the redox MnOx CeOx system because of severe heating effects for laser power in excess of 0.6 mW. The X‐ray diffraction data of samples calcined in the range of 673 1273 K confirm that the micro‐Raman characterization of the composite MnOx CeOx systems requires an adequate minimization of the irradiation power to prevent the strong sintering and restructuring phenomena due to laser‐heating effects. We present an investigation of the dynamic structure factor and of the dielectric function epsilonM(Q,omega) of the prototypical semiconductor silicon for finite momentum transfer, combining inelastic x-ray scattering experiments and ab initio calculations. In contrast with optical spectra, for finite momentum transfer time-dependent density-functional theory in the adiabatic local-density approximation together with lifetime broadening describes the physics of valence excitations correctly. Major structures in the spectra, governed by short-range crystal and exchange-correlation local-field effects, are strongly influenced by a mixing of transitions of positive and negative energies, in striking difference to spectra for vanishing momentum transfer. A N-body problem “of goldfish type” is introduced, the Newtonian (“acceleration equal force”) equations of motion of which describe the motion of N pointlike unit-mass particles moving in the complex z-plane. The model—for arbitrary N—is solvable, namely its configuration (positions and velocities of the N “particles”) at any later time t can be obtained from its configuration at the initial time by algebraic operations. It features specific nonlinear velocity-dependent many-body forces depending on N2 arbitrary (complex) coupling constants. Sufficient conditions on these constants are identified which cause the model to be isochronous—so that all its solutions are then periodic with a fixed period independent of the initial data.
