An exact numerical analysis of coupled planar electron waveguides with asymmetric rectangular potential profiles

An exact numerical analysis is given of electron waves in a pair of coupled semiconductor heterojunction electron waveguides modelled by a rectangular potential distribution. The waveguide lengths required for electron current transfer between the guides agree asymptotically with estimates from Yariv's coupled mode theory and are usefully more accurate. Moreover the electron wave coupling due to an ideal launcher can be worked out, leading to estimates of the off/on current ratio occurring in the waveguides when regarded as an ultrafast switch. For a Poisson probability distribution of the number of electrons N making up a bit-pulse, we have calculated the minimum average N, dependent upon , which would be required to keep the switching bit-error rate below prescribed limits. Pulse rise times and switching delays are derived from the explicit forms for the longitudinal electron wave group velocity. Combining the bit-error and switching-time calculations leads to estimates of the waveguide current densities which would be required in practice. Some normalized sets of curves relating to our analysis are given and used to predict the performance of particular examples of recently proposed AlGaAs/GaAs heterojunction electron waveguide switch/couplers.     

Derivatives of 2,4-diamino-6-methylpteridine

Eighteen derivatives of 2,4-diamino-6-methylpteridine related to methotrexate and aminopterin have been prepared from 6-(bromomethyl)-2,4-pteridinediamine by nucleophilic displacement reactions. None of these compounds showed any antileukemic acitivity.     

A Complex Pyrrolo-oxazinone and Its Iodo Derivative Isolated from a Tunicate

Two cytotoxic triphenylpyrrolo-oxazinones were isolated from a tunicate and their structures elucidated by spectral methods. Lukianol A ( = 3,7,8-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]oxazin-1 (1H)-one; 1 ) had MIC of 1 μg/ml in KB cytotoxicity tests; MIC value for 2 was 100 μg/ml.     

Design and evaluation of a Dean vortex-based micromixer

A mixer, based on the Dean vortex, is fabricated and tested in an on-chip format. When fluid is directed around a curve under pressure driven flow, the high velocity streams in the center of the channel experience a greater centripetal force and so are deflected outward. This creates a pair of counter-rotating vortices moving fluid toward the inner wall at the top and bottom of the channel and toward the outer wall in the center. For the geometries studied, the vortices were first seen at Reynolds numbers between 1 and 10 and became stronger as the flow velocity is increased. Vortex formation was monitored in channels with depth/width ratios of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0. The lowest aspect ratio strongly suppressed vortex formation. Increasing the aspect ratio above 1 appeared to provide improved mixing. This design has the advantages of easy fabrication and low surface area.     

Kinetic resolution of atropisomeric amides

We have demonstrated the feasibility of the kinetic resolution of atropisomeric amides using the commercially avaliable AD-mix. To our knowledge, this methodology represents the first catalytic kinetic resolution of such compounds. Relative rates of up to 32 have been found for the kinetic resolution processes. We have also determined the barriers to rotation and half-lives of some of these amides. The half-lives range from 7 to 135 h at room temperature.     

Syntheses and characterization of cyano-bridged homo and hetero bimetallic complexes containing η and η-cyclic hydrocarbons

The reactions of [(ind)Ru(PPh₃)₂CN] (ind = η⁵-C₉H₇) (1) and [CpRu(PPh₃)₂CN] (Cp = η⁵-C₅H₅) (2) with [(η⁶-p-cymene)Ru(bipy)Cl]Cl (bipy = 2,2′-bipyridine) (3) in the presence of AgNO₃/NH₄BF₄ in methanol, respectively, yielded dicationic cyano-bridged complexes of the type [(ind)(PPh₃)₂Ru(μ-CN)Ru(bipy)(η⁶-p-cymene)](BF₄)₂ (4) and [Cp(PPh₃)₂Ru(μ-CN)Ru(bipy)(η⁶-p-cymene)](BF₄)₂ (5). The reaction of [CpRu(PPh₃)₂CN] (2), [CpOs(PPh₃)₂CN] (6) and [CpRu(dppe)CN] (7) with the corresponding halide complexes and [(η⁶-p-cymene)RuCl₂]₂ formed the monocationic cyano-bridge complexes [Cp(PPh₃)₂Ru(μ-CN)Os(PPh₃)₂Cp](BF₄) (8), [Cp(PPh₃)₂Os(μ- CN)Ru(PPh₃)₂Cp](BF₄) (9) and [Cp(dppe)Ru(μ-CN)Os(PPh₃)₂Cp](BF₄) (10) along with the neutral complexes [Cp(PPh₃)₂Ru(μ-CN)Ru (η⁶-p-cymene)Cl₂] (11), [Cp(PPh₃)₂Os(μ-CN)Ru(η⁶-p-cymene)Cl₂] (12), and [Cp(dppe) Ru(μ-CN)Ru(η⁶-p-cymene)Cl₂] (13). These complexes were characterized by FT IR, ¹H NMR, ³¹P{¹H} NMR spectroscopy and the molecular structures of complexes 4, 8 and 11 were solved by X-ray diffraction studies.
