From Multifractal Measures to Multifractal Wavelet Series

Given a positive locally finite Borel measure μ on R, a natural way to construct multifractal wavelet series is to set , where . Indeed, under suitable conditions, it is shown that the function F_μ inherits the multifractal properties of μ. The transposition of multifractal properties works with many classes of statistically selfsimilar multifractal measures, enlarging the class of processes which have self-similarity properties and controlled multifractal behaviors. Several perturbations of the wavelet coefficients and their impact on the multifractal nature of F_μ are studied. As an application, multifractal Gaussian processes associated with F_μ are created. We obtain results for the multifractal spectrum of the so-called W-cascades introduced by Arnéodo et al.     

Propriétés statistiques des entiers friables

Let Ψ(x,y) (resp. Ψ_m(x,y)) denote the number of integers not exceeding x that are y-friable, i.e. have no prime factor exceeding y (resp. and are coprime to m). Evaluating the ratio Ψ_m(x/d,y)/Ψ(x,y) for 1≤slantd≤slantx, m≥slant 1, x≥slant y≥slant 2, turns out to be a crucial step for estimating arithmetic sums over friable integers. Here, it is crucial to obtain formulae with a very wide range of validity. In this paper, several uniform estimates are provided for the aforementioned ratio, which supersede all previously known results. Applications are given to averages of various arithmetic functions over friable integers which in turn improve corresponding results from the literature. Weak convergence of random <Emphasis Type="Bold">p</Emphasis>-mappings and the exploration process of inhomogeneous continuum random trees

We study the asymptotics of the p-mapping model of random mappings on [n] as n gets large, under a large class of asymptotic regimes for the underlying distribution p. We encode these random mappings in random walks which are shown to converge to a functional of the exploration process of inhomogeneous random trees, this exploration process being derived (Aldous-Miermont-Pitman 2004) from a bridge with exchangeable increments. Large deviation for the empirical eigenvalue density of truncated Haar unitary matrices

Let U_m be an m×m Haar unitary matrix and U_[m,n] be its n×n truncation. In this paper the large deviation is proven for the empirical eigenvalue density of U_[m,n] as m/n→λ and n→∞. The rate function and the limit distribution are given explicitly. U_[m,n] is the random matrix model of quq, where u is a Haar unitary in a finite von Neumann algebra, q is a certain projection and they are free. The limit distribution coincides with the Brown measure of the operator quq.     

Convergence Analysis of the Block Householder Block Diagonalization Algorithm

This paper develops algebraic and convergence properties of the left and right block reflectors used in the block diagonalization algorithm. Aliasing Error of Sampling Series in Wavelet Subspaces

Alising error arises whenever a sampling formula, valid for a prescribed space, is applied to a function in a bigger space. In this work, we estimate the aliasing error of classic and average sampling expansions in wavelet subspaces of a multiresolution analysis.     

Particle spectra from the ALCOR model

We introduce the Transchemistry Model as a dynamical extension of the Algebraic Coalescence Rehadronization (ALCOR) model in describing the hadronization of quark matter which is expected to be produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions. Results are presented for CERN SPS NA49 Pb+Pb experiment calculating hadron multiplicities and momentum spectra. The freeze-out properties of different hadrons are characterized by similar temperature, density and flow profiles in cylindrically symmetric geometry.     

A teacher education experiment to challenge conceptions and practices

This study describes a teacher education experience with grade 5–6 teachers, based on a calculator module within a national program for mathematics in-service teacher education. The aim was to challenge the teachers’ conceptions about the role of the calculator in mathematics teaching and to promote their reflection about professional practices. The research methodology was qualitative and interpretive, with data collection through interviews and observation of teacher education and classroom supervision sessions, as well as analysis of teachers’ portfolios. The results indicate that some teachers are clearly against the use of the calculator in the mathematics classroom, while others allow students to use it in a passive way and some others are very affirmative about its use. The teachers who argue against the use of the calculator seem to predominate, suggesting a great distance between the curriculum orientations and classroom practice. The methodology of the course, combining collective sessions and individual classroom supervision, proved to be fruitful, providing new information, practice and discussion that allowed teachers to analyze different kinds of tasks in which the calculator might be useful, experiment using them in the classroom and reflect about the students’ work. The no imposing and questioning approach used in collective discussions encouraged teachers to assume their own positions; sharing and discussing in the collective reflections during the course stimulated a deeper reflection of their practice. Therefore, in this course, in-service teacher education focused on practice contributed to teachers to reflect on their conceptions and practices.     

Logarithmic correction to the specific heat in tris-sarcosine calcium chloride

Specific heat experimental results in the 3x10^?2 ≦ | t | ≦5.5x10^?5 temperature range ($\text{t =}\text{(T?T}{}_{\mathrm{C}}\text{)}\text{T}{}_{\mathrm{C}}$) were fitted by means of the logarithmically corrected Landau theory of uniaxial dipolar ferroelectrics. The non-universal parameters b and t_O as well as the transverse and longitudinal correlation lengths at zero temperature are determined.     

Exchangeable claim sizes in a compound Poisson‐type process

When dealing with risk models the typical assumption of independence among claim size distributions is not always satisfied. Here we consider the case when the claim sizes are exchangeable and study the implications when constructing aggregated claims through compound Poisson‐type processes. In particular, exchangeability is achieved through conditional independence, using parametric and nonparametric measures for the conditioning distribution. Bayes' theorem is employed to ensure an arbitrary but fixed marginal distribution for the claim sizes. A full Bayesian analysis of the proposed model is illustrated with a panel‐type data set coming from a Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS). Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
