The ETACS European Project for testing the comparability of sensors and analysers: Part II. Field tests

 The results of field tests performed within the European Testing and Assessment of Comparability of On-line Sensors/Analysers (ETACS) European Project are presented in this article. This work is complementary to the laboratory tests, already published in Part I in this Journal. The objective was to consider the complete measuring chain, including the sensor/analyser, sampling elements, pumping and conditioning devices needed for a particular application. These aspects were not included in the laboratory tests and, therefore, new facets were involved. Field tests are considered site specific in terms of the sample dynamic range and matrix composition, as well as event dependent with respect to environmental conditions. A protocol for checking the performance of sensors/analysers working in a field location is presented. The protocol is a general guide and, therefore, can be used independently of the nature of the sensor/analyser under evaluation.     

Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibria of 1,1-dimethylethoxy-butane + methanol or ethanol + water at 101.32 kPa

Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibrium data (VLE) at 101.325 kPa have been determined in the miscible region for 1,1-dimethylethoxy-butane (BTBE) + methanol + water and 1,1-dimethylethoxy-butane (BTBE) + ethanol + water ternary systems, and for their constituent binary systems, methanol + BTBE and ethanol + BTBE. Both binary systems show an azeotrope at the minimum boiling point. In the ternary system BTBE + methanol + water no azeotrope has been found, however, the system BTBE + ethanol + water might form a ternary azeotrope near the top of the binodal. Thermodynamically consistent VLE data have been satisfactorily correlated using the UNIQUAC, NRTL and Wilson equations for the activity coefficient of the liquid phase. Temperature and vapor phase compositions have been compared with those calculated by the group-contribution methods of prediction ASOG, and the original and modified UNIFAC. Predicted values are not in good agreement with experimental values.     

Decomposition kinetics of the N-bromoaminoacids,N-bromoalanine,N-bromo-2-aminobutyric acid,and N-bromonorvaline

A kinetic study of the decomposition reactions of N-bromoalanine, N-bromo-2-aminobutyric acid, and N-bromonorvaline shows them to be first-order with respect to N-bromoaminoacid concentration and independent of both excess aminoacid and pH over the interval pH 9–11. In this pH range the mean rate constants at 298 K were 1.20 × 10^?3 s^?1, 1.37 × 10^?3 s^?1 and 1.28 × 10^?3 s^?1, respectively. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

CONSEL, a least-squares program for estimating stability constants from polarographic data

This article describes CONSEL, a least-squares linear-regression program which, when applied to polarographic data, provides estimates of stability constants suitable for priming non-linear optimization programs. The use of CONSEL avoids the need for recourse to traditional graphical methods. The results of its application to three systems are presented.     

A kinetic study of the chlorination of tertiary alcoholamines in alkaline media

The kinetics of the chlorination of various tertiary alcoholamines by hypochlorite have been studied in alkaline media. A reaction mechanism consistent with the experimental results is put forward, and a relationship is established between the rate constants and the polar parameter (Σσ*) of the substituents.     

INTERMEDIATES IN THE ROOM TEMPERATURE FLASH PHOTOLYSIS AND LOW TEMPERATURE PHOTOLYSIS OF PURINE SOLUTIONS

The flash photolysis of purine in acetonitrile and in water at different pH was studied. The transients produced on flash excitation of degassed aqueous solutions have been identified as the triplet excited state, the hydrated electron, a purine radical cation and radical anion on the basis of quenching experiments and comparison to transients observed in low temperature photolysis.
