We describe the formation of self-assembling nanoscale fibrillar aggregates from a hybrid system comprising a short polypeptide conjugated to the fluorophore fluorene. The fibrils are typically unbranched, approximately 7 nm in diameter, and many microns in length. A range of techniques are used to demonstrate that the spectroscopic nature of the fluorophore is significantly altered in the fibrillar environment. Time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy reveals changes in the guest fluorophore, consistent with energy migration and excimer formation within the fibrils. We thus demonstrate the use of self-assembling peptides to drive the assembly of a guest moiety, in which novel characteristics are observed as a consequence. We suggest that this method could be used to drive the assembly of a wide range of guests, offering the development of a variety of useful, smart nanomaterials that are able to self-assemble in a controllable and robust fashion.  相似文献

We examine the photophysical properties of ladder-type pentaphenylenes, which have been prepared as prototypical "all-in-one" emissive materials bearing both electron-accepting (diaryloxadiazole) and electron-donating (triphenylamine) units. We find that donor-acceptor interactions are very dependent on the nature of the connectivity of these groups to the main pentaphenylene chain. When the oxadiazole and triphenylamine units were substituted on opposite sides of the pi-conjugated pentaphenylene chromophore, photoluminescence with long lifetimes typical of exciplex-like species was observed, while being significantly quenched by intermolecular charge separation between the substituents. By contrast, when the triphenylamine units were attached at the ends of the chromophore, no such effects were observed and a blue/green photoluminescence was obtained with very high quantum efficiency. In this latter configuration, evidence of ambipolar charge transport and a blue/green electroluminescence were additionally observed.  相似文献

When aqueous suspensions of 1 μm, negatively charged polystyrene particles are subject to a 1 kHz alternating electric field of strength greater than 7 kV(rms) m(-1), dynamic elliptical clusters of particles spontaneously form. With potential applications in microchannel fluidics in mind, we characterize how cluster formation and particle circulation, driven by induced dipole-dipole interactions, is critically dependent on time, field strength, electrolyte concentration, and cell thickness. Logarithmic growth of cluster size is observed, and particle velocity within the clusters is found to be proportional to cluster length. Increasing cell thickness from 10 to 60 μm increases the projected cluster area but decreases cluster aspect ratio as the result of changing particle dispersal rates. Clusters are shown to generate significant fluid shear suitable for microchannel mixing applications. These clusters are observed to distort under transverse fluid flow and, above a critical flow rate, to undergo a transition to form regularly spaced particle streams, which may be suitable for two-dimensional visualization of fluid flow.  相似文献

The presence of heavy metals in environmental waters having an important place in the industrial waste is a major threat to viability. Heavy metals are transported to humans through the ecological cycle, damaging many tissues and organs. In recent years, agricultural and food waste can be used to remove heavy metals. At the present study, magnetically modified coffee grains which are alternative to conventional particle systems were prepared and heavy metal removal performances were investigated. The coffee grains used were magnetically modified by contact with water-based magnetic fluid. Magnetically modified coffee grains were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis and electron spin resonance (ESR). Adsorption studies are made with four different heavy metal ions, namely Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II) and Zn(II). Adsorption isotherms were determined and heavy metal removal performance of magnetic coffee grains were investigated from synthetic waste water.  相似文献

Variation of theT c as a function of composition for the C15 materials of the systems Hf−V and Zr−V was investigated. Samples in the as cast and annealed conditions were examined by x-ray and optical metallography. None of the samples was found to be of single phase. For the Hf−V system,T c increases to a constant value of about 9 K for the compositions between 36 and 60 at. %V. A slight increase ofT c between 60 and 70 at. %V and a degradation inT c above 80 at. %V were observed. As cast materials show the maximumT c value of 9.4 K. Deviations from stoichiometry and heat treatments produce considerable changes in the microstructures but have little effect onT c . A slight enhancement ofT c for the alloy containing 80 at. %V is explained by the pressure on V2Hf due to V phase by the differential thermal contraction. For the Zr−V system, maximumT c value of 8–6 K was observed for alloys having 20–66 at. %V in as cast condition. Heat treatments cause the lowering ofT c . Results indicate that the preparation of ZrV2 superconducting material will need more careful control than would be necessary for HfV2.  相似文献
