Structural specificity in asymmetric charge-transfer complexation of helicenes

The diastereoroeric charge-transfer complexes formed between the two enantiomers of 2,15-dimethoxy[6]helicene and R(?)2-(2,4,5,7-tetranitro- 9-fluorenyloximino)propanoic acid have quite distinct geometries, revealed by NMR.     

The role of refocusing in dynamic X-wave formation during femtosecond laser filamentation in water

<正>With the evolution of a laser pulse in water,the formation of a nonlinear X wave during femtosecond filamentation is investigated based on numerical simulations.In particular,we analyze the far-field angularly resolved spectra obtained for different temporal portions of the ultrashort pulse during its propagation. Our result shows that the refocusing of ultrashort pulse leads to the formation of dynamic X wave which essentially manifests itself as conical emission.

Stretch-bend combination polyads in the ÃAu state of acetylene, C2H2

Rotational analyses are reported for a number of newly-discovered vibrational levels of the S₁-trans (ùA_u) state of C₂H₂. These levels are combinations where the Franck-Condon active and vibrational modes are excited together with the low-lying bending vibrations, and . The structures of the bands are complicated by strong a- and b-axis Coriolis coupling, as well as Darling-Dennison resonance for those bands that involve overtones of the bending vibrations. The most interesting result is the strong anharmonicity in the combinations of (trans bend, a_g) and (in-plane cis bend, b_u). This anharmonicity presumably represents the approach of the molecule to the trans-cis isomerization barrier, where ab initio results have predicted the transition state to be half-linear, corresponding to simultaneous excitation of and . The anharmonicity also causes difficulty in the least squares fitting of some of the polyads, because the simple model of Coriolis coupling and Darling-Dennison resonance starts to break down. The effective Darling-Dennison parameter, K₄₄₆₆, is found to increase rapidly with excitation of , while many small centrifugal distortion terms have had to be included in the least squares fits in order to reproduce the rotational structure correctly. Fermi resonances become important where the K-structures of different polyads overlap, as happens with the 2¹3¹B¹ and 3¹B³ polyads (B = 4 or 6). The aim of this work is to establish the detailed vibrational level structure of the S₁-trans state in order to search for possible S₁-cis (¹A₂) levels. This work, along with results from other workers, identifies at least one K sub-level of every single vibrational level expected up to a vibrational energy of 3500 cm⁻¹.     

The spin-orbit and rotational constants for the N2 C" 5Pi(ui) (v = 3) state

The spin-orbit (A = -16.4 cm(-1)) and rotational (B = 1.017 cm(-1)) constants for the N2 C" 5Pi(ui)(v = 3) level are determined by a fit to rotational lines in the C" 5Pi(u)-A' 5Sigma(g)+(3-1) band that terminate in J'Omega' = 3(3), 4(3), 3(2), and 4(2) levels of the C" state. The C"-state spin-orbit constant is consistent with semi-empirical estimates, based on spin-orbit constants observed in several other electronic states of N2 and the atomic spin-orbit coupling constant, zeta(N 2p). The C"-A' bands exhibit the unusual feature of oppositely degraded sub-band heads, Omega' = 3 (red) and Omega' = 1, 0, and -1 (blue). The unusually wide range of B(Omega)eff values, from 0.85 cm(-1) (Omega = 3) to 1.28 cm(-1) (Omega = -1) for C" 5Pi(v = 3) should be diagnostically useful for Omega'-assignments. The C" 5Pi(v = 3) level lies 14257.17 and 90599 cm(-1) above A' 5Sigma(g)+(v = 1) and X 1Sigma(g)+(v = 0), respectively, and Re(C" 5Pi) = 1.50 A.     

Causal relations via linking in twistor space

We investigate the relationship between two different notions on linking, one homological and one holomorphic, in a twistorial context. The two notions turn out to be supprisingly closely related.     

The application of high speed photography and white light speckle to the study of dynamic fracture

A white light speckle technique is combined with high speed photography to study the dynamic fracture of a sample of PMMA. A series of single exposure speckle patterns are photographically recorded at the rate of 2 × 10⁵ frames s^-1 during fracture of the sample. The displacement field around the tip of the propagating crack may then be determined by superimposing pairs of individual frames to form a ‘double-exposure’ speckle pattern. It is shown that the method gives values for the stress intensity factor K which are consistent with those obtained from other techniques.
