We report very low temperature ( T) thermopower and resistivity ( rho) measurements on variable-density, two-dimensional hole systems confined to GaAs quantum wells. As the hole density is lowered from 1.49x10(11) cm(-2) to 0.14x10(11) cm(-2), the system crosses from an insulating ( drho / dT less, similar0) to a metallic regime ( drho / dT>0) and finally displays insulating behavior ( drho / dT<0). Diffusion thermopower shows a striking sign reversal in a narrow range of density in the metallic regime, suggesting a qualitative change in the conduction or the scattering mechanism. 相似文献

Background
Trail-making tests, such as the Concept Shifting Task (CST), can be used to test the effects of treatment on cognitive performance over time in various neuropsychological disorders. However, cognitive performance in such experimental designs might improve as a result of the practice obtained during repeated testing rather than the treatment itself. The current study investigated if practice affects the accuracy and duration of performance on the repeatedly administered Concept Shifting Task modified to make it resistant to practice (mCST). The mCST was administered to 54 healthy participants twice a day, before and after a short break, for eight days. Results. The ANOVA and meta-analysis showed that there was no improvement in the mCST accuracy on the last vs. the first trial (Hedges' g = .14, p = .221) or within the session (after vs. before the break on all days; g = .01, p = .922). However, the participants performed the task faster on the last vs. the first trial (g = -.75, p < .001) and after vs. before the break on all days (g = -.12, p = .002). Conclusions. Repeated administration of the mCST does not affect the accuracy of performance on the test. In this article we compare the classical monopole mass filter of von Zahn and the monopole mass filter with a hyperbolic V-shaped electrode. The experimental results and those of computer simulation for both mass spectrometers are presented. We show that the replacement of a conventional 90 degrees V-shaped electrode by an electrode with a hyperbolic profile substantially improves the peak shape of any given mass, and increases the mass resolution by a factor of 3-4 and the abundance sensitivity by a factor of 100. The potential of high analytical performance combined with electroforming techniques for electrode manufacture indicate future practical uses of such instruments. An ideal antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering of the spins of the CuO layers of an underdoped cuprate prevents the low energy tunneling of the charge carriers between the layers. In order to obtain a non-vanishing c-axis conductivity (σc), we invoke ground state fluctuations of the spin system. These provide a frequency-dependent gating effect by changing the direction of the AF order parameter within one layer relative to that in a neighboring layer, thereby permitting some tunneling. A series of anthraquinone (C(14)O(2)H(8)) derivatives has been studied by means of electron capture negative ion mass spectrometry (ECNI-MS), photoelectron spectroscopy (PES), and AM1 quantum chemical calculations. Mean lifetimes of molecular negative ions M(-.) (MNI) have been measured. The mechanism of long-lived MNI formation in the epithermal energy region of incident electrons has been investigated. A simple model of a molecule (a spherical potential well with the repulsive centrifugal term) has been applied for the analysis of the energy dependence of cross sections at the first stage of the electron capture process. It has been shown that a temporary resonance of MNI at the energy approximately 0.5 eV corresponds to a shape resonance with lifetime 1-2.10(-13) s in the f-partial wave (l = 3) of the incident electron. The next resonant state of MNI at the energy approximately 1.7 eV has been associated with the electron excited Feshbach resonance (whose parent state is a triplet npi* transition). In all cases the initial electron state of the MNI relaxes into the ground state by means of a radiationless transition, and the final state of the MNI is a nuclear excited resonance with a lifetime measurable on the mass spectrometry timescale. The effect of variation of core and cladding index difference, Δn=ncore−ncladding, on allowable values for the guided mode transverse magnetic propagation constants within a step-index, multi-mode optical fiber is investigated. We use a iterative computational technique to calculate the propagation constants for modes inside and outside the core that satisfy the boundary conditions contained within the characteristic eigen-equation for the TM field components. Local temperature inhomogeneities in systems containing micron and submicron objects can result in unexpected consequences. If the mean free path of the host gas constituents is comparable to a characteristic length of the system, then a net exchange of momentum occurs between the constituents and the involved surfaces. For a given temperature gradient and a given pressure range, this results in the presence of Knudsen and Knudsen-like forces (KF). The pressure dependence of these forces has been studied using a microelectromechanical system composed of a microcantilever near a substrate surface. Nano-Newton scale KF are observed by the bending of the microcantilever as monitored by the charge variation on the microcantilever-substrate assembly in a capacitive mode. 相似文献
