Influence of the retardation of the multiplexing element in a dual channel Q-switched laser

We present an experimental and numerical analysis, how deviations of the multiplexer-retardation influence the output power of a time-multiplexed dual channel laser. The laser has two different channels, each one with its own gain medium. The channels are time-multiplexed by a single crystal photo-elastic modulator. It enables to double the repetition rate and output power of the laser. However, as multiplexing is based on polarization-switching, the retardation of the modulator should be kept within certain limits. By experimental measurement and theoretical analysis, we determine the operational window within which the retardation should be kept to avoid additional losses into the resonator. The analysis was done for two configurations of the laser setup, namely with and without a quarter-wave plate.     

Regiospecific Intramolecular Aldol Condensation Induced by Conjugate Addition of lithium dimethylcuprate to ζ-Oxo-α, β-enones preliminary communication [1]

ζ-Oxo-α, β-enones react with lithium dimethylcuprate to give cyclic aldols such as hydroxydecalone 1 and hydroxyspiro[4.5]decanone 2 in a regio- and stereospecific manner. This new reaction, a combination of conjugate methyl addition to α, β-enones with directed intramolecular aldolisation, is suggested to proceed via either enoate anions, such as 8 and 11 , or radical anions, such as 9 → 10 and 12 → 13 , as intermediates.     

Pump-induced nonlinear refractive-index change in erbium- and ytterbium-doped fibers: theory and experiment

A 980-nm pump-induced nonlinear refractive-index (n2) change in erbium-doped (20-m) and ytterbium-doped (20-m) fibers has been measured at 1064 nm by time-delayed photorefractive beam coupling in a co-propagating and counterpropagating geometry. It was found that n2 decreases at the wavelength of the probe beam when the pump beam is present. We present a semiclassical theory based on a four-state system that accounts for the pump-induced change of n2. Both theoretical and experimental results show that a significant index change, of the order of 10%, can be obtained for cw pump powers as small as 10 mW.     

MV-Algebra Pasting

Z. Rieanová proved that every D-lattice is a set-theoretical union of MV-algebras. These MV-algebras are blocks in the D-lattice. There is a dual question: How can we construct a D-poset from a given collection of MV-algebras. To solve this problem we use the pasting technique. We define an admissible system of MV-algebras and we prove that the pasting of this system is a D-poset.     

Fast concentration of dissolved forms of cesium radioisotopes from large seawater samples

The method developed for cesium concentration from large freshwater samples was tested and adapted for analysis of cesium radionuclides in seawater. Concentration of dissolved forms of cesium in large seawater samples (about 100 L) was performed using composite absorbers AMP-PAN and KNiFC-PAN with ammonium molybdophosphate and potassium–nickel hexacyanoferrate(II) as active components, respectively, and polyacrylonitrile as a binding polymer. A specially designed chromatography column with bed volume (BV) 25 mL allowed fast flow rates of seawater (up to 1,200 BV h^?1). The recovery yields were determined by ICP-MS analysis of stable cesium added to seawater sample. Both absorbers proved usability for cesium concentration from large seawater samples. KNiFC-PAN material was slightly more effective in cesium concentration from acidified seawater (recovery yield around 93 % for 700 BV h^?1). This material showed similar efficiency in cesium concentration also from natural seawater. The activity concentrations of ¹³⁷Cs determined in seawater from the central Pacific Ocean were 1.5 ± 0.1 and 1.4 ± 0.1 Bq m^?3 for an offshore (January 2012) and a coastal (February 2012) locality, respectively, ¹³⁴Cs activities were below detection limit (<0.2 Bq m^?3).     

Effects of gemini surfactants on egg phosphatidylcholine bilayers in the fluid lamellar phase

The influence of 1,4-butanediamonium-N,N'-dialkyl-N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl dibromides (CmA, m = 7-16 is the number of alkyl carbons) on the egg yolk phosphatidylcholine (EYPC) bilayer thickness and lipid surface area at the bilayer-aqueous phase interface is studied using X-ray diffraction on fluid lamellar CmA + EYPC + H2O phases as a function of CmA:EYPC and H2O:EYPC molar ratios and the alkyl chain length m. At the constant CmA:EYPC = 0.4 and H2O:EYPC = 18 molar ratios, the CmA induced bilayer thickness decrease shows a minimum and the lipid surface area increase a maximum at the alkyl chain length m = 9. The obtained results are discussed in the context of a structural perturbation model of the cut-off effect in biological potencies of surfactants which occurs when increasing the alkyl substituent chain length above the critical value.     

New Sphingolipids and Other Constituents of Pancovia laurentii

Phytochemical investigation of the bark and leaves of Pancovia laurentii (Sapindaceae) resulted in the isolation of a new ceramide and a new cerebroside, named pancoviamide ( 1 ), and pancovioside ( 2 ) respectively, together with six known compounds: uracil, (R)‐N‐[(1S,2S,3R)‐2,3‐dihydroxy‐1‐(hydroxymethyl)heptadec‐5‐en‐1‐yl]‐2‐hydroxytetracosanamide, stigmasta‐7,22‐dien‐3‐ol, β‐stitosterol, β‐sitosterol 3‐O‐β‐D ‐glucopyranoside, and 2,3‐dihydroxypropyl pentadecanoate. The structures of 1 and 2 were determined by means of spectroscopic methods. Compounds 1 and 2 were tested in vitro for their antiprotozoal properties against several protozoa and for their cytotoxicity.
