Phenazine Radical Cations as Efficient Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Catalysts for the Cross-Dehydrogenative Aza-Henry Reaction

The redox activity of molecular phenazine catalysts has been previously exploited for aerobic oxidative amine homo- and cross-coupling reactions. In this contribution, we have extended the reaction scope of this novel type of organocatalyst and used them in the cross-dehydrogenative aza-Henry coupling of isoquinolines with nitromethane under aerobic conditions. Additionally, we have designed and prepared a novel porous organic polymer by cross-linking of tetrakis(4-bromophenyl)silane and dihydrophenazine through Pd-catalyzed Buchwald-Hartwig cross-coupling. This new type of heterogeneous catalyst, apart from being robust and easily reusable, also showed outstanding catalytic activities and improved selectivity compared to its molecular counterpart. A plausible reaction mechanism was proposed based on spectroscopic and kinetic measurements.     

External electric field effect on electronic properties and charge transfer in CoI2/NiI2 spinterface

Electronic structure and spin-related properties of CoI₂/NiI₂ heterostructure were studied by means of density functional theory. It was shown that the electronic structure at the Fermi level can be characterized by a band gap. The effect of the external electric field on charge transfer and electronic properties of the CoI₂/NiI₂ interface was investigated, and it was found that band gap width depends on the strength of the applied electric field, switching its nature from semiconducting to a half-metallic one. An easy control of the electronic properties and promising spin-polarized nature of the CoI₂/NiI₂ spinterface allows the heterostructure to be used in spin-related applications.     

Enantiodivergent [4+2] Cycloaddition of Dienolates by Polyfunctional Lewis Acid/Zwitterion Catalysis

Diels–Alder reactions have become established as one of the most effective ways to prepare stereochemically complex six-membered rings. Different catalysis concepts have been reported, including dienophile activation by Lewis acids or H-bond donors and diene activation by bases. Herein we report a new concept, in which an acidic prodiene is acidified by a Lewis acid to facilitate deprotonation by an imidazolium–aryloxide entity within a polyfunctional catalyst. A metal dienolate is thus formed, while an imidazolium–ArOH moiety probably forms hydrogen bonds with the dienophile. The catalyst type, readily prepared in few steps in high overall yield, was applied to 3-hydroxy-2-pyrone and 3-hydroxy-2-pyridone as well as cyclopentenone prodienes. Maleimide, maleic anhydride, and nitroolefin dienophiles were employed. Kinetic, spectroscopic, and control experiments support a cooperative mode of action. High enantioselectivity was observed even with unprecedented TONs of up to 3680.     

Taking compact NMR to monitoring real reactions in large-scale chemical industries—General considerations and learnings from a lab-scale test case

The considerations for use of compact nuclear magnetic resonance in a large-scale industrial environment clearly differ from those in academic and educational settings and even from those in smaller companies. In the first part of this article, these differences will be discussed along with the additional requirements that need to be fulfilled for successful applicability in different use cases. In the second part of the article, outcomes from different research activities aiming to fulfill these requirements will be presented with a focus on an online reaction-monitoring study on a lab-scale nucleophilic chlorination reaction.     

Di- and Tetracyano-Substituted Pyrene-Fused Pyrazaacenes: Aggregation in the Solid State

Five di- and tetracyano-substituted pyrene-fused pyrazaacenes were synthesized and studied as potential electron acceptors in the solid state. Single crystals of all compounds were grown and the crystal packing studied by DFT calculations (transfer integrals and reorganization energies) to get insight into possible use for semiconducting charge transport.     

Realization of 2-solvable nilpotent groups as groups of classes of homotopy self-equivalences

Let X be a 1-connected CW-complex of finite type and ε_?(X) be the group of homotopy classes of self-equivalences of X which induce the identity on homotopy groups. In this paper, we prove that every finitely generated 2-solvable rational nilpotent group is realizable as ε_?(X) where X is the rationalization of a 1-connected CW-complex of finite type.     

On the complexity of enumerating pseudo-intents

We investigate whether the pseudo-intents of a given formal context can efficiently be enumerated. We show that they cannot be enumerated in a specified lexicographic order with polynomial delay unless P=NP. Furthermore we show that if the restriction on the order of enumeration is removed, then the problem becomes at least as hard as enumerating minimal transversals of a given hypergraph. We introduce the notion of minimal pseudo-intents and show that recognizing minimal pseudo-intents is polynomial. Despite their less complicated nature, surprisingly it turns out that minimal pseudo-intents cannot be enumerated in output-polynomial time unless P=NP.
