Thermal diffusivity study of cheese fats by thermal lens detection

In this paper we used thermal lens spectrometry to determine the thermal diffusivity of cheese fats. We have used equal concentrations of cheese fats from oaxaca, chihuahua, gouda, manchego and mozzarella cheeses at 42°C temperature. The two lasers mismatched mode experimental configuration was used with a He-Ne laser, as a probe beam and an Ar⁺ laser as the excitation one. The characteristic time constant of the transient thermal lens was obtained by fitting the theoretical expression to the experimental data in order to obtain the thermal diffusivity of the cheese fat samples. This measured thermal property may contribute to a better understanding of the cheese fats quality, which is very important in food industry.     

First intermolecular cyclopropanation of Fischer dialkylaminocarbene complexes. Synthesis of 1-aminocyclopropanecarboxylic acid derivatives

[reaction: see text] The first cyclopropanation reaction of olefins with Fischer dialkylaminocarbene complexes is presented. The reaction yields 1-aminocyclopropanecarboxylic acid derivatives in a single step, usually with high diastereoselectivity. An approach to the asymmetric version of this reaction is also presented. The synthetic utility of the procedure is exemplified by the synthesis of both cycles of metanoproline in a single step. In addition, the synthesis of the first Fischer carbene containing a halocarbonyl group is reported.     

Electrochemical treatment of textile dyes and their analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection

Several textile dyes were individually exposed to electrochemical treatment. Chromaticity variation and the formation of degradation products were followed using a UV spectrophotometer and HPLC with diode array detection. Dyes studied belong to the azo (color index, C.I. 15,510), methine (C.I. 48,013), indigo (C.I. 73,040), natural (C.I. 75,760) and arylmethane (C.I. 42,000) classes. Aliquots of the solutions treated at constant potential were analyzed and compared with control dye solutions. The final electrolysis solutions obtained by using different electrode materials: Pt, Ti and diamond presented different chromatograms. It was found that the novel (in this application) diamond electrode is efficient in studying the degradation of various dyes. Possible fragmentation and molecule moiety rearrangement are proposed as a result of the electrochemical treatment.     

Influence of metal ions on antioxidant behaviour in polypropylene

The effect of Cr(III), Fe(III) and Cu(II) ions, at trace levels, on the effectiveness of four commercial antioxidant systems, viz. Topanol, Santowhite, Hostanox 03 and Irganox 1425, in polypropylene (PP) films is examined using infra-red and second-order derivative uv spectroscopy. The results show that at these levels the metal ions have a minor effect on the unstabilised polymer. However, the ions can have a beneficial or adverse effect on antioxidant activity, particularly under oven ageing conditions. The observed effect depends on the metal/antioxidant system, and is attributed to an indirect interaction between the components which can delay or accelerate antioxidant decomposition in the polymer. An exception to this behaviour is the metal complex Irganox 1425, which interacts strongly with copper ions in the polymer matrix. The antioxidant is partially transformed by copper ions during the compression moulding stage. The beneficial effect present in some cases is in direct contrast with what has generally been observed in studies using unstabilised polymers.     

Ince-Gaussian series representation of the two-dimensional fractional Fourier transform

We introduce the Ince-Gaussian series representation of the two-dimensional fractional Fourier transform in elliptical coordinates. A physical interpretation is provided in terms of field propagation in quadratic graded-index media whose eigenmodes in elliptical coordinates are derived for the first time to our knowledge. The kernel of the new series representation is expressed in terms of Ince-Gaussian functions. The equivalence among the Hermite-Gaussian, Laguerre-Gaussian, and Ince-Gaussian series representations is verified by establishing the relation among the three definitions.     

Locally periodic Timoshenko rod: experiment and theory

The flexural vibrations of a locally periodic rod, which consists of N unit cells, are discussed both from the experimental and theoretical points of view. Timoshenko's beam theory and the transfer matrix method are used to calculate the normal-mode frequencies and amplitudes. The theoretical values are then compared with the experimental ones, which are obtained using an electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT). Good agreement between the numerical results and the experimental measurements is obtained. It is shown that as N grows, a band spectrum emerges.     

A novel organic-inorganic hybrid based on a dinuclear copper complex supported on a keggin polyoxometalate

The autoassembly process of copper-oxalate dimers and Keggin type polyoxometalates leads to the first example of a new family of organic-inorganic hybrids, K(14)[(Cu(2)(bpy)(2)(mu-ox))(SiW(11)O(39)Cu(H(2)O))](2)[SiW(11)O(39)Cu(H(2)O)]. approximately 55H(2)O. This compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/m, a = 37.932(6) A, b = 21.303(3) A, c = 12.546(2) A, beta = 106.16(1) degrees, Z = 2. The crystal structure reveals the presence of a polymeric hybrid built up of alternating dimer and polyoxometalate entities.

On Transfer Operators for Continued Fractions with Restricted Digits

Diffractively produced charm final states in 800-GeV/c pp collisions

We report the first observation of diffractively produced open charm in 800-GeV/c pp collisions of the type pp-->pD*X. We measure cross sections of sigma(diff)(D*+) = (0.185+/-0.044+/-0.054) (mu)b and sigma(diff)(D(*-)) = (0.174+/-0.034+/-0.029) (mu)b. Our measurements are based on 4.3x10(9) events recorded by FNAL E690 in the fixed-target run of 1991. We compare our results with previous fixed-target charm experiments.
