Simultaneous Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy of single conjugated polymer chains

Simultaneous surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and fluorescence is demonstrated from single conjugated polymer chains. As resonance enhancement of SERS depends on the spectral overlap of the polymer's absorption and the incident laser, resonance Raman and fluorescence effectively probe the absorbing and emitting part of the polymer, respectively. The optical phonon energies change along the polymer chain, providing a window to spatially track excited state relaxation. Whereas a mean spatial redistribution of the excitation is witnessed by a change in vibronic fingerprint following interchromophoric energy transfer, intrachromophoric exciton self-trapping leaves the vibrations unchanged.     

Temperature evolution of the umbrella structure in holmium iron garnet

Using neutron diffraction data, the thermal evolution of the magnetic structure of Ho₃Fe₅O₁₂ has been studied. Below the compensation temperature (T _comp=137 K), the umbrella structure parameters which fit the spontaneous ferrite magnetizations have been determined. AboveT _comp, the compound behaves as a Néel type ferrimagnet. Particular attentions have been given to the magnetic form factors of both iron sublattice on one hand and on the other hand to a rhombohedral distorsion fromI a3d toR below 30 K and in first approximation toR c forT>30 K.     

Electroproduction of π0-mesons on protons at very low values of |q 2|

The electroproduction of π⁰-mesons on protons has been measured with electrons of 1.7 and 2.1 GeV energy in the region of the nucleon resonances at \(W = \sqrt {(q + p)^2 } = 1,400 - 2,000MeV\) at rather low values of |q ²|=|(e?e′)²|=0.01–0.1 GeV² but at high values of the nucleon recoil |t|=|(p?p′)²|≈0.6–2.2 GeV² corresponding to \(\Theta _\pi ^{cm} \approx 145^ \circ - 180^ \circ\) . Up toW≈1,650 MeV the cross section for π⁰-production with virtual photons of |q ²|≈0.03 GeV² is only slightly smaller than that with real photons. ForW?1,700 MeV the cross section at |q ²|≈0.03 GeV² is on average a factor of 2 smaller than that atq ²=0 but only slightly higher than that at |q ²|≈0.3–1 GeV².     

Time-resolved experiments on the photoablation of polystyrene and PMMA by ArF-laser radiation

The photoablation of polystyrene (PS) and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) was studied in real-time during the uv laser pulse at 193 nm. The transmission and total reflection of thin polymer layers on quartz glass substrates was measured time-resolved. From the results for the strongly absorbing PS it can be concluded that the emission of material starts within the first few nanoseconds of the laser pulse. Photoablation of PMMA, which is a relatively weak absorber at 193 nm, is accompanied by strong modifications of the transmission by the first several ten laser pulses.     

Low-lying (K π = 0+) states of gadolinium isotopes

The sd-interacting boson approximation (sd-IBA) and the df-interacting boson approximation (df-IBA) can be related to each other and the states of the interacting boson approximation model can be identified with the fully symmetric states in the sdf interacting boson approximation model. A systematic study of the sdf-IBA model showed that the constructed Hamiltonian can successfully describe the strong octupole correlations in the deformed nuclei. We showed that the interacting boson approximation may account for many of these K ^π ?=?0⁺ states. It was found that the calculated energy spectra of the gadolinium isotopes agree quite well with the experimental data. The observed B(E2) values were also calculated and compared with the experimental data.     

Texture investigations of Mn?Al magnets by neutron time-of-flight diffraction

In the present work the connection between magnetic properties and texture of two samples of the tetragonal Mn Al phase is investigated. The specimens have been prepared by different cold deformation methods to get various texture types. For texture analysis neutron time-of-flight technique has been applied. Some aspects of the mathematical treatment of experimental data has been discussed. The main texture components in the inverse pole figures are inclined with respect to the direction of easy magnetization. Therefore, improved magnetic properties of the material can be expected using more optimal preparation techniques.
