Comparison of calorimetric and IR-spectroscopic data for alcohols and alcoholic solutions

The heats of solution of alcohols in hexane can be considered as the energy necessary to break hydrogen bonds (H-bond). The amount of non H-bonded OH groups estimated from caloric data, are in good agreement with IR-spectroscopic data. Comparison of calorimetric and IR-spectroscopically determined H-bond energies permit the separation of intermolecular van der Waals effects from H-bond interactions. This separation shows that van der Waals interactions of alcohols or water should not be underestimated.

Übersicht Der unabhängig voneinander durch Papkovich [1] und den Verfasser [2, 3] aufgestellte Ansatz zur Lösung dreidimensionaler Elastizitätsprobleme enthält 4 harmonische Funktionen, von denen in der Regel nur drei benötigt werden. Für die Vollständigkeit dieses Ansatzes wird nachstehend ein einfacher Beweis angegeben, der sich aus der Theorie der linearen Differentialgleichungen mit konstanten Koeffizienten ergibt.

Summary The three-functions-set of Papkovich and the author for the solution of three-dimensional problems of the linear theory of elasticity contains four harmonic functions, only three of which are generally used. A proof for the completeness of this set is given in this paper based on the theory of linear differential equations with constant coefficients.

The removal of inorganic ions from solutions with fibrous ion-exchange cellulose and checking of the purified substances by neutron-activation analysis

Summary For the rapid removal of heavy metal impurities from large volumes of solutions, ion-exchange cellulose loose fibres have proved to be effective. Distilled water and absolute ethanol were purified by the column technique. For the checking of the effectiveness of the purification, analysis with carboxycellulose and neutron activation were used. The results were in good agreement. The purification is effective up to ppt concentrations.

Zusammenfassung Zur Entfernung von Schwermetallverunreinigungen aus Flüssigkeiten großen Volumens entsprachen am besten die watte-förmigen Ionaustausch-Zellulosen. Wir haben destilliertes Wasser und absoluten Äthylalkohol von ihren Verunreinigungen in Kolonnen gereinigt. Zur Kontrolle der Wirksamkeit der Reinigung haben wir 1) die Carboxy-Zellulose-Analyse und 2) die Neutronen-Aktivierungsanalyse verwendet. Die Resultate der Methoden 1) und 2) stimmen gut überein. Die Reinigung ist bis zur ppt-Konzentration wirksam.

A graph theoretical bound for the p-median problem

The p-median problem is a minisium network location problem that seeks to find the optimal location of p centres in a network. In the present paper a graph-theoretical bound is developed for the problem. This bound is based on shortest spanning trees and arborescences and other graphical properties of the problem. It is shown that the graph-theoretical bound dominates a bound based on shortest distances.     

A Callan-Symanzik study of the λϕ34+gϕ36 theory

We investigate a $\text{L}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>I</mtext>}}\text{=λ?}{}_3{}^4\text{+g?}{}_3{}^6$ theory using Callan-Symanzik equations. Logarithmic corrections to trivial fixed-point behaviour are obtained. The theory is shown to correspond to a model for tri-critical phenomena in ³He⁴He mixtures.
