The determination of selenium status in the Australian diet using neutron activation analysis

Australia-wide samples of 50 representative foods from each of the State capitals were analysed for selenium by instrumental and radiochemical neutron activation analysis. Results were compared with State and Federal Regulations for toxic elements in foods as well as with recommendations by Australian and US authorities for safe and adequate dietary intake of this essential trace element.     

Preparation of a discotic 2,4,7,9-tetraaryl-6H-dibenzo[c,e][1,2]thiazine and generation of a persistent Radical 1

6H-Dibenzo[d,e][1,2]thiazine substituted with four 3,4-dioctyloxyphenyl groups forms a room temperature discotic phase with a clearing temperature of 104°C. Oxidation of the thiazine 2b with either metal oxides (PbO₂ or AgO) or SO₂Cl₂ gave a moderately stable radical 1b (a _N = 0.95 mT, g = 2.0045). Full conversion of 2b to 1b was observed with AgO in a toluene/MeCN mixture or with SO₂Cl₂. The radical 1b was isolated in the neat form with the latter oxidant. It shows sensitivity to molecular oxygen, which hampered its purification and subsequent thermal and magnetic studies.     

Mass splitting in supersymmetric theories from an effective lagrangian point of view

Gauge and global internal symmetries, even when spontaneously broken, restrict the possible mass splittings within supermultiplets. A systematic method of analysis is presented which is applicable both for 〈F〉- and 〈D〉-type supersymmetry breaking, with emphasis on avoiding unacceptable splittings within the quark and lepton supermultiplets. Expressions for gluino and photino masses are also obtained.     

Neutrino and antineutrino proton scattering data and the ratio of down to up quarks in the proton

New data on the x-dependence of the ratio of down to up quarks in the proton are presented from neutrino and antineutrino experiments using the Fermilab 15-foot bubble chamber filled with hydrogen. The new data are in good agreement with existing data from electron scattering experiments performed at SLAC but are not accurate enough at large x to discriminate between the QCD prediction and a (1 ? x) behavior as x → 1.
