In this review we trace the evolution of the three muon (g-2) experiments which have played a considerable role in the history of CERN. In doing so, our discussion of the measurements is by no means comprehensive since full reports have already been published elsewhere. Instead we have endeavoured to place each in its physics context and to point out the technical developments that were necessary to achieve the succeding steps in precision.  相似文献

Measurements for determining of the path of groundwater migration remain an important tool in the overall assessment of environmental processes and transport of pollutants. This paper examines a multiwavelength laser for the determination of eosin, a groundwater tracer, using capillary electrophoresis/laser-induced fluorescence (CE-LIF) at excitation wavelength 514.5 nm. Eosin was one of four dyes used in a study of adjacent resource conservation and recovery act (RCRA) and Superfund sites (created by the comprehensive environmental response, compensation, and liability act) that routinely relied on spectrofluorimetry for determination as we have previously reported. However, the improved specificity of CE-LIF is further illustrated in this work applied to the analysis of adsorbent pads placed in monitoring wells after dye injection and flushing from injection wells. The multiwavelength laser provided the capability to analyze for several dyes with one laser. The advantages/disadvantages of CE-LIF versus spectrofluorimetry are discussed. Spectrofluorimetry is fast and sensitive and will likely continue to be the primary workhorse technique. CE-LIF could provide confirmation when greater specificity is needed in a regulatory context.  相似文献

Phase-locked discharge patterns of single cat auditory-nerve fibers were analyzed in response to complex tones centered at fiber characteristic frequency (CF). Signals were octave-bandwidth harmonic complexes defined by a center frequency F and an intercomponent spacing factor N, such that F/N was the fundamental frequency. Parameters that were manipulated included the phase spectrum, the number of components, and the intensity of the center component. Analyses employed Fourier transforms of period histograms to assess the degree to which responses were synchronized to the frequencies present in the acoustic stimulus. Several nonlinearities were observed in the response as intensity was varied between threshold and 80-90 dB SPL. Response nonlinearities were strong for all signals except those with random phase spectra. The most commonly observed nonlinearity was an emphasis of one or more stimulus components in the response. The degree of nonlinearity usually increased with intensity and signal complexity and decreased with fiber frequency selectivity. Half-wave rectification introduced synchronization to the missing fundamental. The strength of the response at the fundamental was related to stimulus crest factor. Signals with low center frequencies and high crest factors often elicited instantaneous discharge rates at the theoretical maximum of pi CF. This suggests that the probability of spike generation approaches one during high-amplitude waveform segments. Response nonlinearity was interpreted as arising from three sources, namely, cochlear mechanics, compression of instantaneous discharge rate, and saturation of average discharge rate. At near-threshold intensities, fibers with high spontaneous rates exhibited responses that were linear functions of stimulus waveshape, whereas fibers with low spontaneous spike rates produced responses that were best described in terms of an expansive nonlinearity.  相似文献

The fluence dependence of lead cluster ion distributions at 222 nm and 308 nm reveal markedly different behavior. Results obtained at 308 nm display a simple uniform increase in intensity with higher laser fluence with little change in relative intensities. At 222 nm, however, a significant transformation is found from a markedly different low fluence distribution to a high fluence pattern, which is essentially indistinguishable from that observed at 308 nm. It is concluded that mass spectra obtained at 308 nm, regardless of fluence, or at 222 nm and high fluence contain appreciable contributions from fragmentation. Hence, under these conditions the mass spectra are found to be dominated by cluster ion stabilities. Magic numbers observed at both high and low fluence correspond well to those obtained using electron-impact ionization, and in many instances parallel the magic numbers characteristic of rare-gas clusters. This suggests the stabilities of both neutral and monovalent cationic lead clusters are largely determined by close-packing considerations, and are not appreciably influenced by electronic structure. Similar preferences for close-packed structures are also found for mixed lead-antimony clusters containing one or two antimony atoms that are ionized using high fluence 308 nm excitation.  相似文献

Remarkably anisotropic Mn L2,3 x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra from the ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As are reported. States with cubic and uniaxial symmetry are distinguished by careful analysis of the angle dependence of the spectra. The multiplet structures with cubic symmetry are qualitatively reproduced by calculations for an atomiclike d5 configuration in tetrahedral environment, and show zero anisotropy in the orbital and spin moments within the experimental uncertainty. However, hybridization with the host valence bands is reflected by the presence of a preedge feature with a uniaxial anisotropy and a marked dependence on the hole density.  相似文献

By studying the action of the braid group Bn on the set Gn , we obtain representations of Bn into a wreath product of the symmetric group and the general linear group over ?[t, t ?1].
