Thermodynamic dissociation constants of salicylic and monochloroacetic acids in mixed solvent systems from conductance measurements at 25°C

The molar conductances of dilute solutions of salicylic and monochloroacetic acids in binary mixtures of methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, N,N-dimethylformamide, acetone, acetonitrile, tetrahydrofuran and dioxane with water have been measured at 25°C. The Lee-Wheaton conductance equation was fitted to the data in order to derive thermodynamic dissociation constants and limiting molar conductances. The results were compared with those in the literature pertaining to analogous media, mostly derived potentiometrically. The findings are interpreted in terms of a solvent effect on the ionization of these acids in mixed solvent systems.This paper is dedicated to the late Professor Raymond M. Highly Efficient and Practical Syntheses of Lavendamycin Methyl Ester and Related Novel Quinolindiones

The novel 7-(N-formyl-, 7-(N-acetyl-, and 7-(N-isobutyrylamino)-2-methylquinoline-5,8-diones were synthesized in excellent overall yields in three steps via the nitration of the commercially available 8-hydroxy-2-methylquinoline followed by a reduction-acylation step and then oxidation. Acid hydrolysis of 7-(N-acetylamino)-2-methylquinoline-5,8-dione (14a) afforded the novel 7-aminoquinoline-5,8-dione 7 in excellent yields. Due to our efficient preparation of dione 14a, we now report a short and practical method for the total synthesis of the potent antitumor agent lavendamycin methyl ester (1b) with an excellent overall yield.     

Spectrophotometric Determination of Acidity Constants of 4‐(2‐Pyridylazo) Resorcinol in Various Micellar Media Solutions

Dissociation equilibria of 4‐(2‐pyridylazo) resorcinol (PAR) in aqueous micellar solutions were determined spectrophotometrically at 25 °C and at the constant ionic strength I = 0.1 M KNO₃. For this purpose, the effect of nonionic (Brij‐35, Triton X‐100, Triton X‐114, Triton X‐405), and anionic (SDS) surfactants on the absorption spectra of PAR at different pH values was studied. Results show that the pK_a values and pure spectra of each species of PAR are influenced by percentages of a neutral and an anionic surfactant such as Brij‐35, Triton X‐100, Triton X‐114, Triton X‐405 and SDS, respectively, added to the solution of this reagent.     

Selenium heterocycles XIV. 2,6-diaryltetrahydroselenopyran-4-ones

In our previous communications, we have reported that selenium heterocycles could be easily obtained either by using selenium dioxide (3) or by selenium (4). In continuation of our studies on the synthesis and chemistry of selenium heterocycles, it was of interest to use aluminum selenide as the precursor of selenium in the preparation of selenium heterocycles.     

Optimization of the reflux ratio for methanol–water stage distillation column

In this paper, the enthalpy-concentration method was applied in order to model a steady-state continuous methanol–water mixture distillation column. This work includes three steps; first, to develop a code in MATLAB v.7.6 to apply to the mathematical model of the column. The second step is to simulate the column using HYSIS v.3.2. While the third is the calculation of the optimized reflux ratio to minimize the operating cost. For a distillation tower such as the methanol–water splitter in this study, there are relatively few degrees of freedom that can be manipulated in order to minimize operating costs; the reflux ratio can influence the steady-state operating point and therefore the daily costs. In this paper, we have discussed the trade-offs between reflux ratios and operating costs. A correlation is derived to define the optimum value of the reflux ratio as an exponential function of a certain economic parameter of energy prices and depreciation costs. We demonstrate that, at low energy prices or high equipment depreciation costs, the optimum reflux factor is high.     

Regioselective Synthesis of Novel Functionalized Phosphanylidene Anthra[2,1-b]furan Derivatives Under Solvent-Free Conditions

A convenient and efficient, regioselective, solvent-free procedure has been developed to react 2,6-dihydroxyanthraquinone, dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates, and triphenylphosphine in one-pot, to afford novel phosphanylidene anthracenyl derivatives 3a-c, which at 90°C due to intramolecular nucleophilic attack formed novel phosphanylidene anthra[2,1-b]furans 4a–c in good yield.     

THE STRUCTURE OF myo-INOSITOL HEXAPHOSPHATE IN SOLUTION: 31P N.M.R. INVESTIGATION

Abstract

Changes in the ³¹P n.m.r. spectrum of myo-inositol hexaphosphate at different pH reveal that the conformation of this molecule varies with its degree of protonation. Above pH 12 it has the equatorial structure (Ie), below it has the axial conformation (Ia) which it retains to pH 5 when it reverts to le on the addition of a seventh proton. These changes are explained by strong hydrogen bonding between phosphate groups. There is also evidence that at low pH (2) the molecule again reverts to la.     

Trimethylsilylation of Alcohols and Phenols,and Direct Acetylation of Silyl Ethers Catalyzed by Fe(ClO4)3.6H2O

In this article, a mild and efficient protocol for the trimethylsilylation of various aliphatic and benzylic alcohols and phenols with trimethylsilyl chloride using a catalytic amount of ferric perchlorate at room temperature and relatively short reaction times in good to excellent yields is reported. Direct acetylation of trimethylsilyl ethers catalyzed with Fe(ClO ₄ ) ₃ .6H ₂ O(0.02 mmol)/Fe(ClO ₄ ) ₃ SiO ₂ (0.2 g) using acetic anhydride at ambient temperature is also reported.
