DYNAMIC STEREOCHEMISTRY OF SYMMETRICALLY BUT DIFFERENTLY SUBSTITUTED DIPHOSPHANES

Abstract

The main interest of our work in Bonn during the last years was in the field of phosphorus-carbon compounds with multiple bonds. Beside the synthesis of new classes of compounds we were particularly interested in the amazing analogy between the PC- and the CC-double bond, which could be proved by evidence of E/Z isomers and a clear indication of pericyclic reactions.     

Anionic Graft Copolymers. ll. Styrene Grafts on EPT Rubbers

Rubbers containing a low level of unsaturation such as EPT may be metalated with a chelate made from s-butyllithium and N,N,N′- N′ -tetramethylethylethylenediamine. The lithiated polymers, reacted with styrene, result in polystyrene graft copolymers. The physical properties are affected by graft level and polystyrene content.     

Anionic Graft Copolymers. III. Hydrogenation of Polydienes Grafted with Vinylaromatics

A new method is described to prepare graft copolymers of polystyrene and polyvinylcyclohexane on polyethylene and poly (ethylene, butene-1). Hydrogenation of the butadiene moieties of graft copolymers of polystyrene on poly-1, 4-butadiene and high vinyl polybutadiene forms graft copolymers of polystyrene on polyethylene and on poly (ethylene, butene-1). Graft copolymers of polyvinylcyclohexane on polyethylene and on poly (ethylene, butene-1) are prepared by completely hydrogenating graft copolymers of polystyrene on poly-1, 4-butadiene and on high vinyl polybutadiene. The physical properties of these polymer systems depend on composition and graft level, resulting in either tough polymers or elastomers.     

Mesoionic Dithiolates (MIDts) Derived from 1,3-Imidazole-Based Anionic Dicarbenes (ADCs)

Mesoionic dithiolates [(MIDt^Ar)Li(LiBr)₂(THF)₃] (MIDt^Ar={SC(NDipp)}₂CAr; Dipp=2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃; Ar=Ph 3 a , 3-MeC₆H₄ (3-Tol) 3 b , 4-Me₂NC₆H₄ (DMP) 3 c ) and [(MIDt^Ph)Li(THF)₂] ( 4 ) are readily accessible (in≥90 % yields) as crystalline solids on treatments of anionic dicarbenes Li(ADC^Ar) ( 2 a - c ) (ADC^Ar={C(NDipp)₂}₂CAr) with elemental sulfur. 3 a - c and 4 are monoanionic ditopic ligands with both the sulfur atoms formally negatively charged, while the 1,3-imidazole unit bears a formal positive charge. Treatment of 4 with (L)GeCl₂ (L=1,4-dioxane) affords the germylene (MIDt^Ph)GeCl ( 5 ) featuring a three-coordinated Ge atom. 5 reacts with (L)GeCl₂ to give the Ge−Ge catenation product (MIDt^Ph)GeGeCl₃ ( 6 ). KC₈ reduction of 5 yields the homoleptic germylene (MIDt^Ph)₂Ge ( 7 ). Compounds 3 a - c and 4 – 7 have been characterized by spectroscopic studies and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The electronic structures of 4 – 7 have been analyzed by DFT calculations.     

Granular flows in a rotating drum: the scaling law between velocity and thickness of the flow

The flow of dry granular material in a half-filled rotating drum is studied. The thickness of the flowing zone is measured for several rotation speeds, drum sizes and beads sizes (size ratio between drum and beads ranging from 47 to 7400). Varying the rotation speed, a scaling law linking mean velocity vs. thickness of the flow, v∼h^m, is deduced for each couple (beads, drum). The obtained exponent m is not always equal to 1, the value previously reported for a drum in litterature, but varies with the geometry of the system. For small size ratios, exponents higher than 1 are obtained due to a saturation of the flowing zone thickness. The exponent of the power law decreases with the size ratio, leading to exponents lower than 1 for high size ratios. These exponents imply that the velocity gradient of a dry granular flow in a rotating drum is not constant. More fundamentally, these results show that the flow of a granular material in a rotating drum is very sensible to the geometry, and that the deduction of the “rheology” of a granular medium flowing in such a geometry is not obvious.     

Formation of “Quasi” Contact or Solvent‐separated Ion Pairs in the Local Environment of Probe Molecules Dissolved in Ionic Liquids

The change from “quasi” contact to “quasi” solvent‐separated ion‐pair configuration in the local environment of a probe molecule in ionic liquids depends on the varying interaction strength of the chosen anions. The ion speciation in these Coulomb fluids could be shown by combining infrared spectroscopy, density functional theory calculations, and natural bond orbital analysis using a low‐self‐clustering probe molecule.     

Non-markovian effects in NMR relaxation processes: An application to molecular dynamics in branched and cross-linked solid polymers

The dynamic of restricted rotatranslation of mobile structural defects along a polymer chain are treated with an equation of motion with a non-Markovian, stochastic force. The MORI/KUBO/ZWANZIG representation gives a stochastic process with a memory where the loss of correlation is dependend on the restriction of diffusional motion of defects. The influence of crosslinks and branchings of the polymer chains on the molecular dynamics are discussed. The analytical spectral densities of ω^−-α-type characterized by the fractal dimensions of the relevant processes in the different polymeric systems, e. g. cis-polybutadiene, cis-polyisoprene, styrene-butadiene-rubber, high density and linear low density polyethylenes, are compared with the observed NMR data.
