Effective atom volumes for implicit solvent models: comparison between Voronoi volumes and minimum fluctuation volumes

An essential element of implicit solvent models, such as the generalized Born method, is a knowledge of the volume associated with the individual atoms of the solute. Two approaches for determining atomic volumes for the generalized Born model are described; one is based on Voronoi polyhedra and the other, on minimizing the fluctuations in the overall volume of the solute. Volumes to be used with various parameter sets for protein and nucleic acids in the CHARMM force field are determined from a large set of known structures. The volumes resulting from the two different approaches are compared with respect to various parameters, including the size and solvent accessibility of the structures from which they are determined. Separation of nucleoside monophosphates using preferential anion exchange intercalation in layered double hydroxides

We report the first example of selective intercalation of nucleoside monophosphates in a layered host material. The intercalated nucleoside monophosphates can then be quantitatively recovered from the inorganic host and so this opens up the possibility of using simple layered inorganic hosts as rapid, cost effective and recyclable materials for the purification and separation of complex biomolecules.     

Topical Problems in the Biosynthesis of Red Blood Pigment

Uroporphyrinogen III plays a key role in the biosynthesis of heme, the red pigment of blood. In vivo studies with specifically ¹⁴C- and ³H-labeled precursors have revealed that the formation uroporphyrinogen III in the organism follows several primary and subsidiary pathways. Model experiments on the pattern of biosynthesis have led to simple and effective methods of synthesizing uroporphyrin analogs and have shown that their production is strongly favored thermodynamically. The biologically porphyrins important thus available permit a mechanistic explanation of the light-induced dermatoses in porphyria diseases and suggest promising medical applications in diagnosis and therapy.     

Skew-product decompositions of Brownian motions on manifolds: A probabilistic aspect of the Lichnerowicz-Szabo theorem

We show that the only compact simply connected manifolds for which the radial part of Brownian motion enjoys the Markov property are compact two points homogeneous spaces, i.e. rank one symmetric spaces.

Suppose there exists a global solution u to the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations, such that $\text{u∈}\text{C}{}_{\mathrm{t}}\text{(}\text{H}\text{?}{}^{\mathrm{1/2}}\text{)}$. We prove that its $\text{H}\text{?}{}^{\mathrm{1/2}}$ norm goes to 0 at infinity. We next use this fact to control the $\text{L}{}^2{}_{\mathrm{t}}\text{(}\text{H}\text{?}{}^{\mathrm{3/2}}\text{)}$ norm of u, and finally we prove that such a solution is stable. Dynamique multi-contact d'un système de solides tridimensionnels rigidesMulti-contact dynamics of a set of three-dimensional rigid bodies

This study is in keeping with the general pattern of dynamical simulations of a set of rigid three-dimensional bodies submitted to unilateral contact constraints with dry friction. An exact formulation (respecting the contact and friction laws) of the problem of predicting the system accelerations and the contact status, in further evolution is proposed. A numerical treatment of this kind of nonlinear problem is presented. This approach is applied to a simple multi-contact example, and yields results in agreement with those of analytical and numerical type, known for this example. To cite this article: C.
