Synthesis and crystal and molecular structure of newN-substituted γ-hydroxybutyramides

TheN-(2-phenylethyl)amide of-(1, 1-ethylenedioxy)-ethyl--hydroxybutyric acid (II) and theN-(p-methoxybenzyl)amide of-(1, 1-ethylenedioxy)-ethyl--hydroxybutyric acid (III) have been synthesized and the crystal structure ofIII has been solved. CompoundIII, C₁₆H₂₃O₅N, crystallizes in the monoclinic space groupP2₁/c witha=12.572(2),b=11.149(2),c=12.317(2) Å and=106.53(1)°. The structure was solved by direct methods, and refined by full-matrix least squares to giveR=0.040 (R _w =0.047) for 2004 intensities. The dioxolane ring has a deformed half-chair conformation.     

Crystal and molecular structure of crenatine carbonate

The crystal and molecular structure of 1-ethyl-4-methoxy-9H-pyrido[3,4b]indole (crenatine) carbonate C₁₄H₁₄N₂O·H₂CO₃, (MS, m/z 226)M _R 288.3, a-carboline alkaloid, has been determined from X-ray diffraction data. The compound crystallizes in the space group Pbca with cell parameters:a=11.616(4),b=18.450(8),c=12.992(5)Å,V=2784(2)ų,Z=8,D _calc=1.375 g cm^–3, (MoK)=0.71069Å,(Mo K)=0.94 cm^–1,F(000)=1216,R/R _w =8.2/10.3% for 1099 reflections. The ring system of the-carboline nucleus is planar. The title compound shows a two center hydrogen bond between the indole N-H group and the oxygen atom of a carbonate group. The structure does not display hydrogen bonding between-carboline groups but rather a bonding network involving the carbonate group.     

Quadratic spline interpolation on uniform meshes

The interpolation problem at uniform mesh points of a quadratic splines(x _i)=f _i,i=0, 1,...,N ands(x ₀)=f₀ is considered. It is known that s–f=O(h ³) and s–f=O(h ²), whereh is the step size, and that these orders cannot be improved. Contrary to recently published results we prove that superconvergence cannot occur for any particular point independent off other than mesh points wheres=f by assumption. Best error bounds for some compound formulae approximatingf _i andf _i ⁽³⁾ are also derived.

On a problem proposed by H. Braß concerning the remainder term in quadrature for convex functions

Summary We prove that the error inn-point Gaussian quadrature, with respect to the standard weight functionw1, is of best possible orderO(n ^–2) for every bounded convex function. This result solves an open problem proposed by H. Braß and published in the problem section of the proceedings of the 2. Conference on Numerical Integration held in 1981 at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach (Hämmerlin 1982; Problem 2). Furthermore, we investigate this problem for positive quadrature rules and for general product quadrature. In particular, for the special class of Jacobian weight functionsw _, (x)=(1–x)(1+x), we show that the above result for Gaussian quadrature is not valid precisely ifw _, is unbounded.Dedicated to Prof. H. Braß on the occasion of his 55th birthday     

Nonlinear stability and convergence of finite-difference methods for the “good” Boussinesq equation

Summary The good Boussinesq equationu _tt =–u _xxxx +u _xx +(u ²) _xx has recently been found to possess an interesting soliton-interaction mechanism. In this paper we study the nonlinear stability and the convergence of some simple finite-difference schemes for the numerical solution of problems involving the good Boussinesq equation. Numerical experimentas are also reported.

Iterative method of designing uniform and laminated shells of revolution made of highly elastic materials

Conclusion An iterative method was proposed for numerical solution of problems concerning the axisymmetric deformation of uniform and laminated shells of revolution made of highly elastic materials. A numerical analysis of chaotic behaviour in Bianchi IX models

In this paper we investigate the chaotic behaviour of the Bianchi IX cosmological models using techniques developed in the study of dynamical systems and chaotic behaviour. We numerically calculate the Lyapunov exponent, , and show that instead of converging to a constant value, it decreases steadily. We study this effect further by studying the Lyapunov exponent using short-time averages. We show that the usual method of calculating is invalid in the case of a cosmological model.
