Synthesis, spectroscopic and thermal studies of the copper(II) aspartame chloride complex

Aspartame adduct of copper(II) chloride Cu(Asp)₂Cl₂·2H₂O (Asp=aspartame) is synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FT IR, UV/vis, ESR spectroscopies, TG, DTG, DTA measurements and molecular mechanics calculations. Aqueous solution of the green solid absorbs strongly at 774 and 367 nm. According to the FT IR spectra, the aspartame moiety coordinates to the copper(II) ion via its carboxylate ends, whereas the ammonium terminal groups give rise to hydrogen bonding network with the water, the chloride ions or neighboring carboxylate groups. The results suggest tetragonally distorted octahedral environment of the copper ions.     

Comparison of the performance of graphitized carbon black and poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) cartridges for the determination of pesticides and industrial phosphates in environmental waters

The determination of polar and nonpolar organophosphorus compounds, triazines and their metabolites, molinate and chlorothalonil in 1 l water samples was investigated using off-line solid-phase extraction followed by gas chromatography with nitrogen-phosphorus and flame photometric detection. The ethylvinylbenzene-divinylbenzene copolymer (LiChrolut EN) and the commercial graphitized carbon black (GCB) of Envi-Carb were tested as solid-phase sorbents. The matrix effect was studied by extracting the compounds spiked in water samples of different types (Milli-Q, tap, salted tap water, river and sea water). The polymeric sorbent LiChrolut EN allowed the determination at low ng/l of all 40 compounds tested, except the very polar atrazine-desethyl-deisopropyl (DDA). Recoveries of compounds from the Envi-Carb sorbent are comparable to those obtained for LiChrolut EN with the exception of chlorothalonil and the more hydrophobic organophosphorus compounds (coumaphos, leptophos), which were strongly sorbed in the Envi-Carb cartridges. Envi-Carb, however, enabled the determination of DDA with a limit of detection of 14 ng/l.

The stereoregularity of polymethylthiiranes initiated by zinc and cadmium thiolates depends upon the nature of the metal, temperature, solvent and the monomer/initiator concentrations ratio. Complexation of the metal with monomer has been studied by (¹³C) and (¹H) NMR on a model molecule, dimethylcadmium. Cryoscopic measurements made on a soluble cadmium thiolate have shown the presence of aggregates. The relationship between these observations and polymer stereoregularity is discussed.     

Speciation of organotin in environmental sediment samples

An optimized sample preparation procedure for organotin speciation in sediment samples has been applied to the analysis of sediments collected in the environment. The method is based on tropolone complexation of the ionic organotins, followed by extraction into a hexane-ethylacetate mixture and derivatization by NaBEt(4). The method was applied to the determination of organotin in various harbour, shipyard and dry-dock sediments in Belgium. Butyltin compounds were detected in all samples analyzed, often at high mg kg(-1) levels. A limited number of samples showed the presence of phenyltin compounds. Further, the method was adapted to the analysis of river sediments sampled from the vicinity of shipyards. Butyltin concentrations were detected at the microg kg(-1) level in the majority of samples.     

A method for the determination of histamine in wine by HPLC with precolumn derivatization with phenylisothiocyanate

Summary A method for determining histamine in wine by precolumn derivatization with PITC (phenylisothiocyanate) with reversed-phase HPLC and UV detection is reported. Histamine can be determined together with the 24 amino acids within 40 min, or separately in a shorter time (less than 4 min) if a prior solid phase extraction clean-up is used.     

Synthesis and crystal structure of 4-acetoxy-5,6-dihydro-5,5-dinitro-2H-1,3-oxazineN-oxide

A novel heterocyclic compound, 4-acetoxy-5,6-dihydro-5,5-dinitro-2H-1,3-oxazineN-oxide, has been synthesized by the reaction of the dipotassium salt of 1,1,5,5-tetranitro-3-oxapentane with aqueous acetic acid.
