Laser transmutation of iodine-129

We report the first successful laser-induced transmutation of ¹²⁹I, one of the key radionuclides in the nuclear fuel cycle. ¹²⁹I with a half-life of 15.7 million years is transmuted into ¹²⁸I with a half-life of 25 min through a (, n) reaction using laser-generated Bremsstrahlung. The integral cross-section value for the (, n) reaction is determined. These experiments offer a new approach to studying transmutation reactions with neutral and charged particles without resource to nuclear reactors or particle accelerators. High-intensity laser induced ion acceleration from heavy-water droplets

Fusion neutrons from a heavy water droplet target irradiated with laser pulses of 3 x 10(19) W/cm(2) and from a deuterated secondary target are observed by a time-of-flight (TOF) neutron spectrometer. The observed TOF spectrum can be explained by fusion of deuterium ions simultaneously originating from two different sources: ion acceleration in the laser focus by ponderomotively induced charge separation and target-normal sheath acceleration off the target rear surface. The experimental findings agree well with 3D particle-in-cell simulations.

Zusammenfassung Mit vernetzter Poly-(dibenzo-18-krone-6) beschichtetes Kieselgel Si 100 eignet sich zur Ionen-Chromatographie. Zahlreiche Anionen können durch Verwendung von Wasser als Eluent getrennt werden. Für den Trennmechanismus ist überwiegend der Ionenausschluß verantwortlich. Zusätzlich beeinflußt der Komplexbildner die Trennung.

On the mechanism of anion separation with silica gel coated with cross-linked poly-(dibenzo-18-crown-6)

Summary Silica gel Si 100 coated with cross-linked poly(dibenzo-18-crown-6) is suitable for ion chromatography. Chromatographic separations of numerous anions can be accomplished with only water as eluent. Two effects overlap, ion exclusion, and complex forming of salts with the crown ether.
