Matrix-isolation-FTIR spectroscopy with an integrating sphere

The use of an integrating sphere for the measurement of absorption spectra of thin films is described. The thin film (for example a rare gas matrix) is grown directly on the inside surface of the sphere. Multiple reflections inside the integrating sphere lead to significant enhancement of weak absorptions of the film, increasing the sensitivity of such measurements.     

Photochemische synthese von H2Fe3-komplexen und ihre aktivität bei der photokatalytischen hydrierung von olefinen und dienen

The photochemical reaction of the trinuclear complex Fe₃(CO)₁₀NSi(CH₃)₃ under hydrogen leads to substitution of the bridging carbonyl group by two hydrogens. The resulting complex H₂Fe₃(CO)₉NSi(CH₃)₃ acts as a catalyst in the photochemical hydrogenation of olefins and dienes.     

Über einen Homomorphiesatz von G.Köthe

The main object of this paper is to generalize a homomorphism theorem of Köthe [5] for a wide class of not necessarily locally convex topological vector spaces. A sequence =(B_n) of balanced sets B_n in a vector space E(), such that the union of the B_n's equals E and such that B_n+B_nB_n+1 for all nN, is called an absorbent sequence. E() is called -locally topological, if it possesses an absorbent sequence =(B_n) of bounded sets and if a linear mapping A from E() into any other vector space is continuous if all restrictions are continuous at 0. It is shown, that a continuous linear mapping A from a vector space E() with an absorbant sequence of compact sets into a boundedly summing -locally topological space F() is a homomorphism if A(E) is closed in F().     

Elution behavior of styrene oligomer fractions in supercritical fluid chromatography

Summary In supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC), the elution behavior of styrene oligomers in pentane depends greatly on the degree of oligomerization, n. The influence of capacity ratio, k, on the lower oligomers up to about n=11 resembles the behavior of other substrates of low molecular weight, like aromatic hydrocarbons. Thus, with pentane of 100 bar and below, minima are found in plots of k versus temperature. In contrast, the k of oligomers of higher molecular weight (n>11) increase monotonously with increasing temperature. The studies were performed using oligostyrene fractions obtained by semipreparative SFC fractionation.     

C→N Migrations of the ethoxycarbonyl group in reactions of ortho-substituted aryl isocyanates with the 1,3-zwitterion derived from triisopropylphosphine and ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate

The reactions of meta—para-substituted aryl isocyanates with phosphorus-containing 1,3-zwitterions, which proceed with the CN migration of the CO₂Et group to form the corresponding carbamates, were extended to ortho-substituted aryl isocyanates. The influence of the steric and electronic effects of the ortho substituents in the aromatic rings of aryl isocyanates on the ease of this rearrangement is qualitatively considered.     

Die Hydrohalogenierung von Hexaphenyldigerman und die Schwingungsspektren einiger Ge2(C6H5) n X6−n -Verbindungen

The reactions of Ge₂(C₆H₅)₆ with HCl and HBr lead in nearly quantitative yields to the 1,1,2,2-tetrahalo derivatives Cl₂(C₆H₅)GeGe(C₆H₅)Cl₂ (I) and Br₂(C₆H₅)GeGe(C₆H₅)Br₂ (II), resp. The Si?Ge bond of (C₆H₅)₃SiGe(C₆H₅)₃ is cleaved under the conditions of hydrohalogenation. The vibrational spectra of Ge₂Br₆, Ge₂(C₆H₅)₆, I, and II are reported. The influence of vibrational coupling on ν GeGe in these compounds is discussed in detail, including vibrational calculations.     

Röntgenkleinwinkeluntersuchungen an Lösungen von Schweineserum-Albumin bei verschiedenen pH-Werten

Zusammenfassung Schweineserum-Albumin wurde nach sorgfältiger Reinigung bei den pH-Werten 7,0, 5,1 und 3,7 mit Hilfe der Röntgenkleinwinkelstreuung untersucht. Es wurde bei allen Messungen praktisch dasselbe Molekulargewicht gefunden: der Mittelwert liegt bei 70 300±2 500. Die Ermittlung der Streumassenradien ergab bei pH 7,0 und pH 5,1 ähnliche Werte (33,0 Å bzw. 31,1 Å), bei pH 3,7 dagegen einen Wert von 37,8 Å. Die Formbestimmung ergab bei pH 7,0 und pH 5,1 identische Achsenverhältnisse (0,75 : 1 : 2), während bei pH 3,7 ein solches von 0,2 : 1 : 1 gefunden wurde.

X-ray small-angle scattering investigations on solutions of porcine serum albumin at differentpH-values

Higly purified samples of porcine serum albumin were measured by the X-ray small-angle scattering method at pH 7.0, 5.1, and 3.7. The molecular weight is found to be the same in all three cases: the mean value is 70 300±2 500. The radius of gyration is 31.1 Å and 33.0 Å at pH 5.1 and 7.0 resp., whereas at pH 3.7 a value of 37.8 Å is found. The determination of the molecular conformation yields a similar axial ratio at pH 5.1 and pH 7.0 of 0.75 : 1 : 2; at pH 3,7 we find an axial ratio of 0.2 : 1 : 1 to be consistent with the scattering curves.

New symmetry properties of a class of Hubbard models

In the Hubbard model for crystals of the AB-type all information on the system is already contained in the set of eigenstates where the number of sites equals the number of electrons or exceeds it by one. We prove this by deriving relations among the eigenstates with different numbers of particles which do not rely on the well-known transformation of electrons to holes. In this context a new good quantum number is identified. We report on results for the one-dimensional case.     

Capillary isoelectric focusing of proteins utilizing poly(vinylpyrrolidone)- and plexiglas-coated columns

Fused-silica capillaries chemically derivatized with silane/poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) or dynamically modified with plexiglas [poly(methyl methacrylate)] were prepared and evaluated with regard to column stability and separation performance for capillary isoelectric focusing of standard proteins. The PVP coating showed the better stability and was good for at least 100 runs while the plexiglas coating started to deteriorate after about 30 runs. The time spent for the plexiglas coating is about 40 minutes while the PVP coating requires two days. The migration time reproducibility was better with the PVP capillary (RSD 0.7-1.6%, n = 5) compared to the plexiglas-coated column (RSD 1.2-2.9%, n = 5) while peak area and height varied over a similar interval (RSD 2-28.1% area; 0.9-22.7% height, n = 5). The two most consistent proteins in this evaluation, viz. myoglobin A and carbonic anhydrase II, showed linear dynamic ranges between 5-150 and 5-50 microg/mL, and limits of detections at 2 and 1 microg/mL, respectively, employing UV detection at 280 nm.

Carbon-13 NMR data are reported for trimethyltin derivatives containing ER_n groups where E  C, Si, Ge, Sn, N, O and S including a series of cyclic amines with ring sizes from three to seven. Coupling constant values for the homologous series of fourth group derivatives give goood correlations with the electronegativity of E. The observation of the two-bond, ¦ ²J(¹¹⁹SnE¹³C) ¦ couplings only in the derivatives containing bulky R groups is rationalized by a bimolecular exchange of ER_n groups in the concentrated solutions studied.
