Large groups of automorphisms of C*-algebras

Groups of *-automorphisms ofC*-algebras and their invariant states are studied. We assume the groups satisfy a certain largeness condition and then obtain results which contain many of those known for asymptotically abelianC*-algebras and for inner automorphisms and traces ofC*-algebras. Our key result is the construction in certain finite cases, where the automorphisms are spatial, of an invariant linear map of theC*-algebra onto the fixed point algebra carrying with it most of the relevant information.     

FTIR spectroscopy of ethyl benzoate-titanium tetrachloride complexes with application to supported Ziegler-Natta catalysts

Several methods using linear predictionz-transformation and autoregression have been applied to FTIR spectral analysis to reduce noise and improve resolution of an emission spectrum obtained from the truncated interferogram.     

Maximality of entropy in finite von Neumann algebras

It is shown that the entropy function H(N ₁,…,N _k ) on finite dimensional von Neumann subalgebras of a finite von Neumann algebra attains its maximal possible value H(⋁ℓ=1k N _ℓ) if and only if there exists a maximal abelian subalgebra A of ⋁ℓ=1k N _ℓ such that A=⋁ℓ=1k(A∩N _ℓ). Vibrational analysis and FTIR spectra of seven isotopic congeners of ethyl benzoate including18O carbonyl and ether labelled esters

FTIR spectra of seven isotopic congeners of ethyl benzoate are fitted to a force field with a standard deviation of less than 7 cm^–1. The field has been transferred to ethyl anisate and an equimolar titanium tetrachloride-ethyl benzoate complex with encouraging success. The band at 1280cm^–1 is definitely assigned as mainly an-C-O stretch.     

Convenient one-step synthesis of 5-carboxy-seminaphthofluoresceins

The one-step synthesis and characterization of a series of regioisomerically pure 5-carboxy-seminaphthofluoresceins (5-carboxy-SNAFLs) is reported. The optical properties were determined in aqueous buffer at around biological pH, and highly pH sensitive, large Stokes-shift fluorophores with emission in the deep-red to near-infrared region were identified.

A two-dimensional proteome map of Shigella flexneri

Shigella flexneri is a Gram-negative facultatively intracellular pathogen responsible for bacillary dysentery in humans. In this study, extracellular proteins from the culture medium and whole cell proteins in cellular extracts of S. flexneri 2a strain 2457T were examined by two-dimensional (2-D) gel electrophoresis using immobilized pH gradient (IPG) technology. Proteins were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) in combination with Mascot search program. In total, among the 488 proteins spots processed, 388 proteins were identified. The identified proteins represented 169 genes. By comparing results of Mascot search against databases of Escherichia coli and genomes of S. flexneri 2a, one S. flexneri-specific protein was identified and one possible gap was found in 2457T genome sequences. Although this proteome map is still incomplete, it is already a useful reference for future studies involving pathogenicity, vaccine development, design of novel antibacterial drugs, etc. Proteome maps and a table of all identified proteins are available on the internet at www.proteomics.com.cn.     

Counterions Control Whether Self‐Assembly Leads to Formation of Stable and Well‐Defined Unilamellar Nanotubes or Nanoribbons and Nanorods

Self‐assembly of the amphiphilic π‐conjugated carbenium ion ATOTA‐1⁺ in aqueous solution selectively leads to discrete and highly stable nanotubes or nanoribbons and nanorods, depending on the nature of the counterion (Cl^? vs. PF₆^?, respectively). The nanotubes formed by the Cl^? salt illustrate an exceptional example of a structural well‐defined (29±2 nm in outer diameter) unilamellar tubular morphology featuring π‐conjugated functionality and high stability and flexibility, in aqueous solution.
