Forced magnetostrictions on MnAs1−xPx (x<0.275) under pulsed magnetic field up to 300 kOe

The magnetostrictions are measured in MnAs_1−xP_x compounds by a capacitance method using pulsed high magnetic field up to 300 kOe. Discontinuous volume expansion was induced by the external field accompanying a structural phase transition from the MaP-type to the NiAs-type and a magnetic phase transition from paramagnetism to ferromagnetism.     

Hopeafuran and a C-glucosyl resveratrol isolated from stem wood of Hopea utilis.

A new resveratrol dimer and a new C-glucosyl resveratrol were isolated from stem wood of Hopea utilis along with nine stilbenoid derivatives comprising bergenin and (+)-lyoniresinol. The structures have been elucidated on the basis of the spectroscopic evidence.     

Synthesis of alkyl α‐aminomethyl‐phenylphosphinates and N,N‐bis(alkoxyphenylphosphinylmethyl)amines by the microwave‐assisted Kabachnik–Fields reaction

As a novel extension, the Kabachnik–Fields reaction was applied to the synthesis of alkyl α‐aminomethyl‐phenylphosphinates, and the double phospha‐Mannich reaction was utilized in the preparation of bis(alkoxyphenylphosphinylmethyl)amines. A total of 27 new aminophosphinate derivatives were synthesized by the microwave‐assisted solvent‐free condensation of alkyl phenyl‐H‐phosphinates, paraformaldehyde, and primary or secondary amines. The starting P‐species were also prepared under microwave conditions. The formation of the N‐methylated aminomethyl‐phenylphosphinate by‐products was also investigated.     

Speciation of the Vanadium(III) Complexes with 1,10-Phenanthroline, 2,2′-Bipyridine,and 8-Hydroxyquinoline

The complex species formed between vanadium(III) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 2,2′-bipyridine (bipy), and 8-hydroxyquinoline (8hq) were studied in aqueous solution by means of electromotive forces measurements, emf(H), at 25 °C with 3.0 mol⋅dm⁻³ KCl as the ionic medium. The potentiometric data were analyzed using the least-squares computational program LETAGROP, taking into account the hydrolytic vanadium(III) species formed in solution. Analysis of the vanadium(III)–phen system data shows the formation of [VHL]⁴⁺, [V(OH)L]²⁺, [V₂OL₂]⁴⁺ and [V₂OL₄]⁴⁺ complexes. In the vanadium(III)–bipy system the [VHL]⁴⁺, [V(OH)L]²⁺, [V₂OL₂]⁴⁺ and [V₂OL₄]⁴⁺ complexes were observed, and in the vanadium(III)–8hq system the complexes [V(OH)L]⁺, [V(OH)₂L], [VL₂]⁺ and [VL₃] were detected.     

Prins-type macrocyclizations as an efficient ring-closing strategy in natural product synthesis

Prins-type macrocyclizations have recently emerged as a successful strategy in the synthesis of polyketide-derived natural products. This reaction provides a concise and selective means to form tetrahydropyran-containing macrocyclic rings of varying size. A high degree of functionality within the macrocycle is tolerated and the yields for these transformations are typically good to excellent. Since the initial report of a Prins macrocyclization reaction in 1979, examples of this approach did not re-emerge until 2008. However, the use of this method in natural product synthesis has rapidly gained momentum in the synthetic community, with multiple examples of this macrocyclization tactic reported in the recent literature.     

Automated mass spectrometric analysis of urinary and plasma serotonin

Serotonin emerges as crucial neurotransmitter and hormone in a growing number of different physiologic processes. Besides extensive serotonin production previously noted in patients with metastatic carcinoid tumors, serotonin now is implicated in liver cell regeneration and bone formation. The aim was to develop a rapid, sensitive, and highly selective automated on-line solid-phase extraction method coupled to high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (XLC-MS/MS) to quantify low serotonin concentrations in matrices such as platelet-poor plasma and urine. Fifty microliters plasma or 2.5 μL urine equivalent were pre-purified by automated on-line solid-phase extraction, using weak cation exchange. Chromatography of serotonin and its deuterated internal standard was performed with hydrophilic interaction chromatography. Mass spectrometric detection was operated in multiple reaction monitoring mode using a quadrupole tandem mass spectrometer with positive electrospray ionization. Serotonin concentrations were determined in platelet-poor plasma of metastatic carcinoid patients (n = 23) and healthy controls (n = 22). Urinary reference intervals were set by analyzing 24-h urine collections of 120 healthy subjects. Total run-time was 6 min. Intra- and inter-assay analytical variation were <10%. Linearity in the 0–7300 μmol/L calibration range was excellent (R² > 0.99). Quantification limits were 30 and 0.9 nmol/L in urine and plasma, respectively. Platelet-poor serotonin concentrations in metastatic carcinoid patients were significantly higher than in controls. The urinary reference interval was 10–78 μmol/mol creatinine. Serotonin analysis with sensitive and specific XLC-MS/MS overcomes limitations of conventional HPLC. This enables accurate quantification of serotonin for both routine diagnostic procedures and research in serotonin-related disorders.     

Synchronized cluster formation in coupled laser networks

We experimentally investigate the phase dynamics of laser networks with homogenous time-delayed mutual coupling and establish the fundamental rules that govern their state of synchronization. We identified a specific substructure that imposes its synchronization state on the entire network and show that for any coupling configuration the network forms at most two synchronized clusters. Our results indicate that the synchronization state of the network is a nonlocal phenomenon and cannot be deduced by decomposing the network into smaller substructures, each with its individual synchronization state.
