A combined chemical and biological process for the recycling of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum into calcium carbonate and elemental sulfur is demonstrated. In this process, a mixed culture of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) utilizes inexpensive carbon sources, such as sewage digest or synthesis gas, to reduce FGD gypsum to hydrogen sulfide. The sulfide is then oxidized to elemental sulfur via reaction with ferric sulfate, and accumulating calcium ions are precipitated as calcium carbonate using carbon dioxide. Employing anaerobically digested municipal sewage sludge (AD-MSS) medium as a carbon source, SRBs in serum bottles demonstrated an FGD gypsum reduction rate of 8 mg/L/h (109 cells)-1. A chemostat with continuous addition of both AD-MSS media and gypsum exhibited sulfate reduction rates as high as 1.3 kg FGD gypsum/m3d. The increased biocatalyst density afforded by cell immobilization in a columnar reactor allowed a productivity of 152 mg SO4-2/Lh or 6.6 kg FGD gypsum/m3d. Both reactors demonstrated 100% conversion of sulfate, with 75–100% recovery of elemental sulfur and chemical oxygen demand utilization as high as 70%. Calcium carbonate was recovered from the reactor effluent on precipitation using carbon dioxide. It was demonstrated that SRBs may also use synthesis gas (CO, H2, and CO2 in the reduction of gypsum, further decreasing process costs. The formation of two marketable products—elemental sulfur and calcium carbonate—from FGD gypsum sludge, combined with the use of a low-cost carbon source and further improvements in reactor design, promises to offer an attractive alternative to the landfilling of FGD gypsum.
A simple analysis of the competition between the alternative channels of atom and excitation transfer in collisions of metastable rare-gas atoms with halogens is presented. The intervention of potential surfaces correlating with highly excited Rydberg states lying just below the limit of the molecular cation as well as those which correlate with the anion provides a qualitative rationale for much current experimental data. 相似文献

Rate constants for the vibrational deactivation of CD4 by the collision partners CD4, He, Ne, Ar, Kr, D2 and O2 have been measured using a laser-fluorescence technique. The results are compared with those for the deactivation of CH4 by the same collision partners and with a modified SSH type theoretical treatment. 相似文献
Hamiltonian systems are analyzed with a double homoclinic orbit connecting a saddle to itself. Competing centers exist. A small dissipative perturbation causes the stable and unstable manifolds of the saddle point to break apart. The stable manifolds of the saddle point are the boundaries of the basin of attraction for the competing attractors. With small dissipation, the boundaries of the basins of attraction are known to be tightly wound and spiral-like. Small changes in the initial condition can alter the equilibrium to which the solution is attracted. Near the unperturbed homoclinic orbit, the boundary of the basin of attraction consists of a large sequence of nearly homoclinic orbits surrounded by close approaches to the saddle point. The slow passage through an unperturbed homoclinic orbit (separatrix) is determined by the change in the value of the Hamiltonian from one saddle approach to the next. The probability of capture can be asymptotically approximated using this change in the Hamiltonian. The well-known leading-order change of the Hamiltonian from one saddle approach to the next is due to the effect of the perturbation on the homoclinic orbit. A logarithmic correction to this change of the Hamiltonian is shown to be due to the effect of the perturbation on the saddle point itself. It is shown that the probability of capture can be significantly altered from the well-known leading-order probability for Hamiltonian systems with double homoclinic orbits of the twisted type, an example of which is the Hamiltonian system corresponding to primary resonance. Numerical integration of the perturbed Hamiltonian system is used to verify the accuracy of the analytic formulas for the change in the Hamiltonian from one saddle approach to the next. Let be a positive integer. We say looks like a power of 2 modulo a prime if there exists an integer such that . First, we provide a simple proof of the fact that a positive integer which looks like a power of modulo all but finitely many primes is in fact a power of . Next, we define an -pseudopower of the base to be a positive integer that is not a power of , but looks like a power of modulo all primes . Let denote the least such . We give an unconditional upper bound on , a conditional result (on ERH) that gives a lower bound, and a heuristic argument suggesting that is about for a certain constant . We compare our heuristic model with numerical data obtained by a sieve. Some results for bases other than are also given.
From line narrowing in amplified spontaneous emission at the D-X transition (269nm) of XeF in solid Ne a gain coefficient of 3.4 cm–1 has been derived and ground-state losses of 2.8 cm–1 have been determined by variation of the absorption length. A dielectric laser cavity has been optimized with the reflectivities R1=100% and R2=70% for 1 cm long crystals; laser action has been achieved. 相似文献
