Polyélectrolytes basiques faibles—I. Détermination du degré de protonation de la poly(vinyl-2 pyridine) par spectrophotométrie dans l'u.v. et par conductimétrie

We have determined the degree of protonation (a) for a weak polybase (poly(2-vinyl-pyridine)) in aqueous solution without added salt by spectrophotometry and conductimetry. For acid solutions of poly(2-vinylpyridine), the use of Kolhrausch's law is adequate; we propose two expressions for the conductance of these solutions (from “ionic association” and “relaxation” models respectively). The values of a, as determined by spectrophotometric and conductimetric measurements, agree well for the highest concentrations and degree of neutralisation (ā).     

Perturbation theory and derivatives of matrix eigensystems

We sketch some recent results in the perturbation theory of the matrix eigenvalue problems Ax = λx and Ax = λBx for multiple eigenvalues. Two quite different approaches — generalizing the Bauer-Fike Theorem and differentiating the eigensystems — have been used.     

Mechanism of presqualene pyrophosphate-squalene biosynthesis II. Synthesis of bifarnesol

A convenient synthesis of the racemate of bifarnesol (4), a proposed biochemical precursor of presqualene pyrophosphate and squalene, is described.     

An optoelectronic recirculating sorter based on CMOS/vertical cavity surface emitting laser smart pixel arrays; architecture and system demonstration

The architecture of an optoelectronic recirculating sorter based on the hybrid integration of CMOS logic circuitry, silicon detector/receivers and vertical cavity surface emitting lasers is presented along with the demonstration of the system.     

One-sided continuous dependence of maximal solutions

We consider the maximal solution of $\text{u′(s) = ?(s, u(s))}$, where ? satisfies a one-sided variant of Carathéodory's conditions. A best-possible condition is proved for the dependence of u on ?. Also we show that a function v satisfies $\text{v(t) ? v(r) ? ?}{}_{\mathrm{r}}{}^{\mathrm{t}}\text{?(s, v(s))ds}$ if and only if v is dominated by the maximal solution u.     

Nonlinear analysis of flow pulses and shock waves in arteries

Zusammenfassung In jeder Gruppe von Menschen variieren die Kreislaufparameterwerte von Individuum zu Individuum ziemlich stark. Um die Effekte realistischer Schwankungen dieser Parameter auf die Strom-und Druckpulse in arteriellen Leitungen zu untersuchen und um mögliche Manifestationen gewisser pathologischer Zustände wie Arteriosklerosis und die Insuffizienz der Aortenklappen zu identifizieren, werden hier einige der Resultate präsentiert, die sich auf Grund des im ersten Teil beschriebenen mathematischen Modells ergeben. Insuffizienz der Aortenklappen ist nachgebildet durch einen Ausströmungspuls mit aussergewöhnlich grossem Rückstrom. Der zugehörige Druckpuls zeigt die bekannten Eigenschaften von Stosswellen, die anscheinend verantwortlich sind für die pistol shot sounds, die man über der arteria femoralis und der arteria radialis von Patienten mit Aorteninsuffizienz hört.
