Creation of entangled states of excitons in coupled quantum dots

We present two methods for the creation of two-particle entangled states of excitons in a coupled quantum dot system. The system contains two identical quantum dots that are coupled by an inter-dot hopping process. The manipulation of the system is succeeded by proper application of an external laser field.     

Singular integral operators on 53-0153-0153-01-spaces

Summary It is shown that certain singular integral operators with variable kernels leave invariant theL ^v, -spaces studied by Campanato, Stampacchia, Peetre and others. Our results extend Peetre's work on convolution operators.     

Proton-proton correlations at small relative momentum in neon-nucleus collisions at E/A=400 and 800 MeV

Proton-proton small angle correlations have been measured in neon-nucleus collisions, using the 4 pi detector Diogene, at 400 and 800 MeV per nucleon incident energies. Values of the size of the emitting region are obtained by comparison with the Koonin formula, taking into account the biases of the apparatus. The dependence of the density on target mass and incident energy is also analysed.     

Synthesis of 4H-3,3a-dihydrothiazolo[4,3-b]quinazolines

Regiospecific synthesis of 4H-3,3a-dihydrothiazolo[4,3-b]quinazolines and 7-methyl-4H-3,3a-dihydrothiazolo[4,3-b]quinazolines IVa and IVb is described. The N-substituted thiazolidinecarboxylic acids Ia and Ib were converted to the corresponding acid chlorides, IIa and IIb but neither reacted with silver trifluoromethanesulphonate. The carboxylic acids Ic and Id were however, decarboxylated to the corresponding iminium ions using phosphorus oxychloride and these afforded the nitroamines IIIa and IIIb. Reductive cyclisation led to the quinazolines IVa and IVb.     

Photogeneration and quenching of reactive oxygen species by urocanic acid

Urocanic acid, UCA, is characterized by two electronic transitions in the UV-B (280-320 nm) which comprise its broad absorption spectrum and give rise to wavelength-dependent isomerization quantum yields. The absorption spectrum of UCA extends into the UV-A (320-400 nm). Given the UV-A component of sunlight is significantly greater than the UV-B component it is hypothesized even weak UV-A photochemistry of UCA could be important for in vivo responses to UV radiation. Degenerate pump-probe experiments performed on t-UCA at several wavelengths in the UV-A reveal an excited-state absorption that undergoes a rapid, approximately 1 ps decay. Photoacoustic experiments performed on both the cis and trans isomers reveal the formation of a long-lived intermediate following UV-A excitation. The efficiency and action spectra for this latter photoactive process are presented and are similar for both isomers of UCA. Cholesterol hydroperoxide assays designed to investigate the nature of the UV-A photoreactivity of t-UCA confirm the production of reactive oxygen species. The bimolecular rate constant for the quenching of singlet oxygen by t-UCA is determined to be 3.5 x 10(6) M(-1) s(-1). Taking into consideration recent theoretical calculations and jet expansion studies of the electronic structure of gas-phase t-UCA, a model is proposed to explain the isomerization and photoreactivity of t-UCA in solution over the UV-A region.     

Gas-chromatographic determination of ultramicro amounts of selenium in pure sulphuric acid

Ultramicro amounts of selenium in pure sulphuric acid are converted into selenous acid with a bromine-bromide redox buffer solution. The selenous acid reacts quantitatively with 4-nitro-o-phenyl-enediamine to form 5-nitropiaselenol which can be extracted into toluene. The extract is very sensitive to electron-capture detection in gas chromatography, and the sensitivity is higher than that of 5-chloro-or 4, 5-dichloro-piaselenol. The calibration curve (peak heights) is linear up to 0.15 mug of selenium in 1 ml of toluene. Pure sulphuric acid, commercially available, contains 10(-6)$ 10(-5) % selenium.     

[2]Paracyclo[2](3,7)-p-tropoquinonophane

The title compound $\text{1}$ a novel cyclophane containing p-tropoquinone, was synthesized starting from 5-methoxytropolone and its physical properties were discussed comparing with those of 3,7-dimethyl-p-tropoquinone and p-benzoquinonophane. The reduced quinone character exhibited by $\text{1}$ was ascribed to the intramolecular CT interaction and the deformation of the quinone ring.
