Poly(methyl methacrylate)s with pendant calixpyrroles: polymeric extractants for halide anion salts

Poly(methyl methacrylate)s containing pendant octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole subunits were prepared and demonstrated to be capable of extracting tetrabutylammonium chloride and fluoride salts from aqueous media.

Effective Hamiltonian for non-minimally coupled scalar fields

In the post Newtonian limit, a non-relativistic Hamiltonian is derived for scalar fields with quartic self-interaction and non-minimal coupling to the curvature scalar of the background spacetime. These effects are found to contribute to the non-relativistic Hamiltonian by adding nonlinearities and by modifying the gravitational Darwin term. As we discuss briefly in the text, the impact of these novel structures can be sizable in dense media like neutron star core, and can have observable signatures in phase transitions, for example.

Transient and First Passage Time Distributions of First- and Second-order Multi-regime Markov Fluid Queues via ME-fication

We propose a numerical method to obtain the transient and first passage time distributions of first- and second-order Multi-Regime Markov Fluid Queues (MRMFQ). The method relies on the observation that these transient measures can be computed via the stationary analysis of an auxiliary MRMFQ. This auxiliary MRMFQ is constructed from the original one, using sample path arguments, and has a larger cardinality stemming from the need to keep track of time. The conventional method to approximately model the deterministic time horizon is Erlangization. As an alternative, we propose the so-called ME-fication technique, in which a Concentrated Matrix Exponential (CME) distribution replaces the Erlang distribution for approximating deterministic time horizons. ME-fication results in much lower state-space dimensionalities for the auxiliary MRMFQ than would be with Erlangization. Numerical results are presented to validate the effectiveness of ME-fication along with the proposed numerical method.

     

Modification of glassy carbon electrode by the electrochemical oxidation of 3‐aminophenylcalix[4]pyrrole in nonaqueous media

3‐Aminophenylcalix[4]pyrrole (3APCP) was grafted to a glassy carbon (GC) surface during the electrochemical oxidation process in 0.1 M tetrabutylammoniumtetra‐fluoroborate (TBATFB) containing acetonitrile solution. The presence of a surface film was confirmed electrochemically by comparing voltammograms of dopamine and ferricyanide redox probes at the bare and modified electrodes. Reflection‐absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS), XPS, atomic force microscopy (AFM), ellipsometry and the contact angle measurements were also employed to characterize 3APCP film on GC electrode. RAIRS analysis revealed that calix[4]pyrrole was bonded to the glassy carbon surface via the etheric linkage. The stability of the modified GC electrode was also studied. A concise and stereospecific synthesis of some cyclitols containing eight-membered rings: cyclooctane-1,2,3,4-tetraoles

A concise and efficient synthesis of cyclooctane-1,2,3,4-tetraoles, new polyhydroxylated eight-membered carbocycles, is described starting from cis,cis-1,3-cyclooctadiene. Cyclooctene endoperoxide obtained by photooxygenation of cis,cis-1,3-cyclooctadiene was the key compound in the synthesis. Reduction of the endoperoxide with zinc or thiourea followed by acetylation of the hydroxyl group and OsO₄/NMO oxidation of the double bond gave (1R(S),2S(R),3R(S),4S(R))-cyclooctane-1,2,3,4-tetraol. Interestingly, epoxidation of cyclooctene-1,4-diol with m-CPBA also afforded trans-epoxy-diol 17. (1R(S),2R(S),3R(S),4S(R))-cyclooctane-1,2,3,4-tetraol was easily obtained by hydrolysis of epoxy-diol 17.     

Facilitated Transfer of Alkali and Alkaline‐Earth Metal Ions by a Calix[4]arene Derivative Across Water/1,2‐Dichloroethane Microinterface: Amperometric Detection of Ca2+

The host–guest complexation reactions between 5,11,17,23‐tetra‐tert‐butyl‐25,27‐diethoxycarbonylmethoxy‐26,28‐dimethoxy calix[4]arene (BDDC4) and alkali and alkaline‐earth metal ions were investigated by facilitated ion transfer processes across water/1,2‐dichloroethane microinterface by using steady‐state cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The obtained facilitated transfers for Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, Rb⁺ and Ca²⁺ were evaluated under the different experimental conditions, at the excess concentrations of metal ions with respect to BDDC4 and vice versa. The association constants having 1 : 1 stoichiometry for Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺ and Rb⁺ in 1,2‐DCE were determined. Also, we demonstrated that BDDC4 can play an important role for the development of highly selective chemical sensor for Ca²⁺ among alkaline‐metal ions in the concentration range of 0.1–1.0 mM in aqueous solution.
