Deleterious gases such as CO and H(2)S can cause degradation of steel by reacting with the metal surface. Here we consider whether alloying the steel surface might be able to inhibit these damaging surface reactions by raising the barriers to molecular dissociation. We employ first-principles density functional theory techniques to investigate the elementary reaction pathways and barriers for CO and H(2)S on FeAl and Fe(3)Si surfaces and compare them with pure Fe surfaces (as a model for steel). We find that H(2)S dissociates on iron surfaces much more easily than CO does. Although FeAl surfaces raise the barriers for H(2)S dissociation, they significantly lower the barriers for CO dissociation. On the other hand, Fe(3)Si surfaces raise the barriers for CO dissociation, but they are as vulnerable as Fe surfaces to H(2)S dissociation. Our findings suggest that alloying iron with Al or Si is unlikely to simultaneously increase its resistance to the initial stages of chemical degradation by CO and H(2)S.  相似文献

The stability and structure of non-covalent complexes of various peptides contatining basic amino acid residues (Arg, Lys) with metalloporphyrins were studied in a quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer. The complexes of heme and three other metalloporphyrins with a variety of basic peptides and model systems were formed via electrospray ionization (ESI) and their stability was probed by energy-variable collision-induced dissociation (CID). A linear dependence for basic peptides and model compounds/metalloporphyrin complexes was observed in the plots of stability versus degrees of freedom and was used to evaluate relative bond strength. These results were then compared with previous data obtained for complexes of metalloporphyrins with His-containing peptides and peptides containing no basic amino acids. The binding strengths of Lys-containing peptide complexes in the gas phase was found to be almost as strong as that of Arg-containing complexes. Both systems showed stronger binding than His- containing peptides studied previously. To probe the structure of Arg and Lys non-covalent complexes (charge solvation versus salt bridges), two techniques, CID and ionmolecule reactions, were used. CID experiments indicate that the gas-phase complexes are most likely formed by charge solvation of the central metal ion in the metalloporphyrin by basic side chains of Arg or Lys. Results from the ionmolecule reaction studies are consistent with the charge solvation structure as well.  相似文献

The authors prove that a proper monomial holomorphic mapping from the two-ball to the N-ball has degree at most 2N-3, and that this result is sharp. The authors first show that certain group-invariant polynomials (related to Lucas polynomials) achieve the bound. To establish the bound the authors introduce a graph-theoretic approach that requires determining the number of sinks in a directed graph associated with the quotient polynomial. The proof also relies on a result of the first author that expresses all proper polynomial holomorphic mappings between balls in terms of tensor products.  相似文献

We prove four theorems about groups with a dihedral (or cyclic) image containing a difference set. For the first two, suppose G, a group of order 2p with p an odd prime, contains a nontrivial (v, k, ) difference set D with order n = k – prime to p and self-conjugate modulo p. If G has an image of order p, then 0 2a + 2 for a unique choice of = ±1, and for a = (k – )/2p. If G has an image of order 2p, then and ( – 1)/( – 1). There are further constraints on n, a and . We give examples in which these theorems imply no difference set can exist in a group of a specified order, including filling in some entries in Smith's extension to nonabelian groups of Lander's tables. A similar theorem covers the case when p|n. Finally, we show that if G contains a nontrivial (v, k, ) difference set D and has a dihedral image D 2m with either (n, m) = 1 or m = p t for p an odd prime dividing n, then one of the C 2 intersection numbers of D is divisible by m. The objective of this study was to determine the incidence of vocal problems in young choir singers and to correlate vocal problems with demographic and behavioral information. A questionnaire addressing vocal habits and hygiene was offered to 571 young choir singers, up to 25 years of age, who sing at least weekly; 129 (22.6%) responded. More than one-half of the respondents had experienced vocal difficulty, particularly older adolescents. Detrimental behaviors and circumstances surveyed were not reflective of the incidence of vocal difficulty, except for morning hoarseness, chronic fatigue, insomnia, and female gender after puberty. Voice care professionals should be aware that self-reported voice difficulties are common among young choral singers, especially postpubescent girls, and children with symptoms consistent with reflux (morning hoarseness) and emotional stress (insomnia). Laryngologists should communicate with choral conductors and singing teachers to enhance early identification and treatment of children with voice complaints, and to develop choral educational strategies that help decrease their incidence.  相似文献

Synchrotron radiation microangiography is a powerful tool for assessing adverse changes in pulmonary vessel density associated with primary pulmonary hypertension (PH). Congestive heart failure (CHF) leads to a `secondary' onset of PH, yet it is unknown whether secondary PH is also associated with reduced vessel density. This study utilized synchrotron radiation to assess both pulmonary vessel density and endothelial function in a Dahl rat model of CHF with secondary PH. High salt‐fed Dahl salt‐sensitive (Dahl‐S) and salt‐resistant (Dahl‐R) rats were anesthetized and microangiography was performed to assess the pulmonary vessel density and vascular responses to (i) sodium nitroprusside (5.0 µg kg?1 min?1), (ii) acetylcholine (3.0 µg kg?1 min?1) and (iii) ET‐1A receptor blockade, BQ‐123 (1 mg kg?1). Dahl‐S rats developed CHF and secondary PH as evident by endothelial dysfunction, impaired vasodilatory responses to acetylcholine, enhanced vasodilatory responses to BQ‐123 and extensive pulmonary vascular remodeling. Consequently, the pulmonary vessel density was adversely reduced. Interestingly, the etiology of secondary PH manifests with structural and functional changes that are comparable with that previously reported for primary PH. One important discrepancy, however, is that ET‐1 modulation of pulmonary vessels is most striking in vessels with a diameter range of 100–200 µm in secondary PH, in contrast to a range of 200–300 µm in primary PH. Such discrepancies should be considered in future studies investigating primary and secondary forms of PH.  相似文献

This study investigated comodulation detection differences (CDD) for fixed- and roved-frequency maskers. The objective was to determine whether CDD could be accounted for better in terms of energetic masking or in terms of perceptual fusion/segregation related to comodulation. Roved-frequency maskers were used in order to minimize the role of energetic masking, allowing possible effects related to perceptual fusion/segregation to be revealed. The signals and maskers were composed of 30-Hz-wide noise bands. The signal was either comodulated with the masker (A/A condition) or had a temporal envelope that was independent (A/B condition). The masker was either gated synchronously with the signal or had a leading temporal fringe of 200 ms. In the fixed-frequency masker conditions, listeners with low A/A thresholds showed little masking release due to masker temporal fringe and had CDDs that could be accounted for by energetic masking. Listeners with higher A/A thresholds in the fixed-frequency masker conditions showed relatively large CDDs and large masking release due to a masker temporal fringe. The CDDs of these listeners may have arisen, at least in part, from processes related to perceptual segregation. Some listeners in the roved masker conditions also had large CDDs that appeared to be related to perceptual segregation.  相似文献

In many cell types, oscillations in the concentration of free intracellular calcium ions are used to control a variety of cellular functions. It has been suggested [J. Sneyd et al., "A method for determining the dependence of calcium oscillations on inositol trisphosphate oscillations," Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 103, 1675-1680 (2006)] that the mechanisms underlying the generation and control of such oscillations can be determined by means of a simple experiment, whereby a single exogenous pulse of inositol trisphosphate (IP(3)) is applied to the cell. However, more detailed mathematical investigations [M. Domijan et al., "Dynamical probing of the mechanisms underlying calcium oscillations," J. Nonlinear Sci. 16, 483-506 (2006)] have shown that this is not necessarily always true, and that the experimental data are more difficult to interpret than first thought. Here, we use geometric singular perturbation techniques to study the dynamics of models that make different assumptions about the mechanisms underlying the calcium oscillations. In particular, we show how recently developed canard theory for singularly perturbed systems with three or more slow variables [M. Wechselberger, "A propos de canards (Apropos canards)," Preprint, 2010] applies to these calcium models and how the presence of a curve of folded singularities and corresponding canards can result in anomalous delays in the response of these models to a pulse of IP(3).  相似文献

Turbulent thermal convection is a well-studied problem with various issues of interest. In this paper, we review our work which shows the nature and origin of anomalous scaling and heat transport in the limit of very strong thermal forcing, can be gained by studying a dynamical model, known as shell model, of homogeneous turbulent thermal convection in which buoyancy acts directly at most scales. Specifically, we have obtained two results. The first result is that when buoyancy acts directly at most scales such that the dynamics are governed by a cascade of entropy, the scaling behavior is described by Bolgiano and Obukhov scaling plus corrections that are due to the variations of the local entropy transfer rate. This result indicates the validity of the extension of refined similarity hypothesis to turbulent thermal convection. The second result is that when buoyancy is acting directly at most scales, a damping term acting on the largest scale, which has to be added for the system to achieve stationarity, plays a crucial role in heat transport, and that the heat transport depends on the strength of thermal forcing in the same manner as that predicted for the ultimate state of very strong thermal forcing. With our interpretation of the damping term representing the effect of the boundaries, this result indicates that in the ultimate state of turbulent thermal convection, when buoyancy is acting at most scales, boundaries would play a significant role in heat transport.  相似文献

This study was aimed at identifying acoustic and physiological measures useful for monitoring voice changes in postnasopharyngeal patients with nonlaryngeal malignancies, and providing evidences of vocal tract effect on voice through comparisons between individuals with and without intact vocal tract. Simultaneous acoustic-electroglottographic signals recorded during phonation of vowels /i/ and /a/ sustained at habitual, high, and low pitch levels were compared among 10 postradiotherapy patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), 10 voice patients (VPs) with intact vocal tract, and 10 healthy individuals with normal voice (NORM). Results from a series of discriminant analyses revealed that the NPC group generally exhibited lower signal-to-noise (SNR) and open quotient (OQ) and higher Formant 1 frequency (F(1)) and speed quotient (SQ) than the NORM group. Unlike both VP and NORM groups, the NPC group failed to show a pitch effect on all voice measures, including OQ, SQ, percent jitter, percent shimmer, and SNR, suggesting an effect of radiotherapy and/or vocal tract on laryngeal behaviors. For the vowel /i/, on the other hand, only the NPC and NORM groups showed a pattern of pitch-dependent F(1) raising, a reflection of increased pharyngeal narrowing. These findings suggested that the pitch effect on laryngeal behaviors differed not only between individuals with intact vocal tract and those without but also between those with structural and dynamic changes of vocal tract.  相似文献
