Through an examination of numerical solutions to Markovian queueing systems, it has been shown that the expected queue length eventually approaches its equilibrium value in an approximately exponential manner. Based on this observation a heuristic is proposed for approximating the transient expected queue length for Markovian systems by scaling the numerical solution of an M/M/1 system.  相似文献

Crystallographic examination of [mu3-S(AuCNC7H13)3](SbF6) shows that it undergoes a reversible phase change from orthorhombic to monoclinic upon cooling. At 190 K, the structure shows that two cations self-associate to form a pseudo-octahedral array of six gold atoms connected by both intra- and interionic aurophilic interactions. On cooling, the clusters become less symmetric, and in one, the interionic Au...Au separations increase, while they decrease in the second cluster. The luminescence of crystalline [mu3-S(AuCNC7H13)3](SbF6) shows corresponding changes in emission, with two emissions of similar lifetimes but with different excitations at 77 K, but only a single emission at 298 K. In contrast, [mu3-S(AuCNC6H11)3](PF6), which has a similar structure to that of the high-temperature form of [mu3-S(AuCNC7H13)3](SbF6), does not undergo a phase change or change in its luminescence upon cooling.  相似文献

We study the class of rectilinear polygons, calledX – Y polygons, with horizontal and vertical edges, which are frequently used as building blocks for very large-scale integrated (VLSI) circuit layout and wiring. In the paper we introduce the notion of convexity within the class ofX – Y polygons and present efficient algorithms for computing theX – Y convex hulls of anX – Y polygon and of a set ofX – Y polygons under various conditions. Unlike convex hulls in the Euclidean plane, theX – Y convex hull of a set ofX – Y polygons may not exist. The condition under which theX – Y convex hull exists is given and an algorithm for testing if the given set ofX – Y polygons satisfies the condition is also presented.  相似文献

In many cell types, oscillations in the concentration of free intracellular calcium ions are used to control a variety of cellular functions. It has been suggested [J. Sneyd et al., "A method for determining the dependence of calcium oscillations on inositol trisphosphate oscillations," Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 103, 1675-1680 (2006)] that the mechanisms underlying the generation and control of such oscillations can be determined by means of a simple experiment, whereby a single exogenous pulse of inositol trisphosphate (IP(3)) is applied to the cell. However, more detailed mathematical investigations [M. Domijan et al., "Dynamical probing of the mechanisms underlying calcium oscillations," J. Nonlinear Sci. 16, 483-506 (2006)] have shown that this is not necessarily always true, and that the experimental data are more difficult to interpret than first thought. Here, we use geometric singular perturbation techniques to study the dynamics of models that make different assumptions about the mechanisms underlying the calcium oscillations. In particular, we show how recently developed canard theory for singularly perturbed systems with three or more slow variables [M. Wechselberger, "A propos de canards (Apropos canards)," Preprint, 2010] applies to these calcium models and how the presence of a curve of folded singularities and corresponding canards can result in anomalous delays in the response of these models to a pulse of IP(3).  相似文献

This study investigated comodulation detection differences (CDD) for fixed- and roved-frequency maskers. The objective was to determine whether CDD could be accounted for better in terms of energetic masking or in terms of perceptual fusion/segregation related to comodulation. Roved-frequency maskers were used in order to minimize the role of energetic masking, allowing possible effects related to perceptual fusion/segregation to be revealed. The signals and maskers were composed of 30-Hz-wide noise bands. The signal was either comodulated with the masker (A/A condition) or had a temporal envelope that was independent (A/B condition). The masker was either gated synchronously with the signal or had a leading temporal fringe of 200 ms. In the fixed-frequency masker conditions, listeners with low A/A thresholds showed little masking release due to masker temporal fringe and had CDDs that could be accounted for by energetic masking. Listeners with higher A/A thresholds in the fixed-frequency masker conditions showed relatively large CDDs and large masking release due to a masker temporal fringe. The CDDs of these listeners may have arisen, at least in part, from processes related to perceptual segregation. Some listeners in the roved masker conditions also had large CDDs that appeared to be related to perceptual segregation.  相似文献

Turbulent thermal convection is a well-studied problem with various issues of interest. In this paper, we review our work which shows the nature and origin of anomalous scaling and heat transport in the limit of very strong thermal forcing, can be gained by studying a dynamical model, known as shell model, of homogeneous turbulent thermal convection in which buoyancy acts directly at most scales. Specifically, we have obtained two results. The first result is that when buoyancy acts directly at most scales such that the dynamics are governed by a cascade of entropy, the scaling behavior is described by Bolgiano and Obukhov scaling plus corrections that are due to the variations of the local entropy transfer rate. This result indicates the validity of the extension of refined similarity hypothesis to turbulent thermal convection. The second result is that when buoyancy is acting directly at most scales, a damping term acting on the largest scale, which has to be added for the system to achieve stationarity, plays a crucial role in heat transport, and that the heat transport depends on the strength of thermal forcing in the same manner as that predicted for the ultimate state of very strong thermal forcing. With our interpretation of the damping term representing the effect of the boundaries, this result indicates that in the ultimate state of turbulent thermal convection, when buoyancy is acting at most scales, boundaries would play a significant role in heat transport.  相似文献
