BF3-mediated additions of organolithiums to ketimines: X-ray crystal structures of BF3-ketimine complexes

[reaction: see text] Additions of lithium acetylides and n-BuLi to N-alkyl ketimines mediated by BF(3)-Et(2)O in THF afford hindered tert-alkylamines in moderate to good yields. Stereochemical results and crystal structures of three BF(3)-imine complexes suggest that allylic strain strongly influences conformation and may be an important determinant of reactivity and selectivity.     

Using staggered grids with characteristic boundary conditions when solving compressible reactive Navier–Stokes equations

A specific (hybrid) arrangement of variables is discussed to solve reactive compressible Navier–Stokes equations on staggered‐like grids with high‐order finite difference schemes. The objective is to improve the numerical flow solution at boundaries. Hybrid arrangement behaviour is compared with ‘pure’ colocated and staggered strategies. Classical Fourier analysis shows accuracy to be significantly improved in the hybrid case. One‐dimensional laminar flame test demonstrates increased robustness (in terms of mesh resolution), whereas computation of 1D exiting pressure wave propagation gives evidence that the method also improves accuracy in the prediction of non‐reflecting outflows, compared e.g. with the fully staggered scheme of (J. Comput. Phy. 2003). Multidimensional extension is illustrated through turbulent 2D planar and 3D expanding flames simulations. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Some extensions of Brioschi’s double alternant

We evaluate some determinants related to Brioschi’s extension of the classical double alternant of Cauchy, and Scott’s extension of Brioschi’s.     

Spatial coherence properties of monochromatic electromagnetic beams and of laser modes

It is shown that, contrary to common belief, monochromatic light beams are, in general, not spatially completely coherent, i.e., they will, in general, not produce fringes of unit visibility in a Young's double pinhole interference experiment. We cite experiments with laser modes which confirm this result.     

Photoisomerization of AZO Aromatic Chromophobes in Polyvinyl Chloride

Abstract

The synthesis and characterization of new vinyl chloride-p-acryloyloxyazobenzene copolymers are reported. Kinetics of photoinduced trans-cis and thermal cis-trans isomerization of azo pendant groups in copolymer have also been investigated, and the kinetic parameters were evaluated. An azo acrylate model compound was used for comparison.
