Intermediate coupling model description of55Fe and57Fe

The properties of the negative parity states of⁵⁵Fe and⁵⁷Fe are investigated in the framework of the intermediate coupling model. In the model, a neutron or a quasineutron is coupled to anharmonic vibrations of the core. Anharmonicities of the vibrations are estimated through the observed properties of the core. Energy levels, spectroscopic factors and electromagnetic properties have been calculated. The results of the present calculations are also compared with available experimental results and other theoretical results. The model reasonably accounts for many of the properties of the low-lying states.     

Response to “About acceptance and rejection zones”

Desimoni and Brunetti raise some questions about the use of Eurachem/CITAC guide, because the Eurachem/CITAC guide does not discuss an ISO recommendation before performing a test, it should be decided whether it is to be a test for conformity or a test for non-conformity. In response, it is pointed out that although this recommendation is not discussed explicitly, it is of necessity covered by the decision rule that describes how the measurement uncertainty will be taken into consideration with regard to accepting or rejecting a product according to its specification and the result of a measurement. In addition, they propose the introduction of an ‘inconclusive’ zone. We do not think that this is necessary, since the Eurachem/CITAC guide takes the view that action on rejection should be covered by the ‘decision rule’ and this can make equivalent provision for confirmation or interpretation.     

The impact of loops on the game of cops and robbers on graphs

In the game of cops and robbers on graphs, the cops and the robber are allowed to pass their turn if they are located on a looped vertex. This paper explores the effect of loops on the cop number and the capture time. We provide examples of graphs where the cop number almost doubles when the loops are removed, graphs where the cop number decreases when the loops are removed, graphs where the capture time is quadratic in the number of vertices and copwin graphs where the cop needs to move away from the robber in optimal play.     

Small Transitive Families of Subspaces

A family of subspaces of a complex separable Hilbert space is transitive if every bounded operator which leaves each of its members invariant is scalar. This article surveys some results concerning transitive families of small cardinality, and adds some new ones. The minimum cardinality of a transitive family in finite dimensions (greater than 2) is 4. In infinite dimensions a transitive pair of linear manifolds exists but the minimum cardinality of a transitive family of dense operator ranges or norm-closed subspaces is not known. However, a transitive family of dense operator ranges with 5 elements can be found, and so can a transitive family of norm-closed subspaces with 4 elements. In finite dimensions (> 1) three nest algebras (corresponding to maximal nests) can intersect in the scalar operators, but two cannot. It is not known if this is the case in infinite dimensions for maximal nests of type ω + 1. Four such nest algebras can intersect in the scalar operators.
