Improving the germination of economically important crops and the condition of young plants is a major challenge currently facing agricultural practice. Pea (Pisum sativum L.) is one of the four most important cultivated legumes, along with groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.), soybean (Glycine max L.) and beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Due to the high protein content (23–33%), there is an interest in growing this crop as a source of protein for humans and animals. In this study, we focused on the effect of Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma (CAPP) on the decontamination and germination of pea seeds, on young seedling growth and production parameters, and on increasing their resistance and mechanical strength. We can state that germination increased by 10 to 25% after plasma treatment, and the most significant decontamination effect was detected when using non-thermal plasma generated in the ambient air (A-variants) and in the nitrogen atmosphere (N-variants). The increased in situ activity of peroxidases (POX) in the cell walls of A-variants and N-variants is also closely related to the increase in the mechanical strength of the cell walls and thus contributes to the higher resistance of these seedlings. This is also illustrated by the differences in lignin deposition among the different variants after CAPP treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first study concerning the influence of CAPP on the lignification of root tissues and on increasing the strength and resistance of plants.

UiO-66 metal–organic framework nanoparticles (NMOFs) gated by aptamer-functionalized DNA tetrahedra provide superior biomarker-responsive hybrid nano-carriers for biomedical applications. Hybrid nano-carriers consisting of ATP-aptamer or VEGF-aptamer functionalized tetrahedra-gated NMOFs are loaded with the chemotherapeutic drug, doxorubicin (DOX). In the presence of ATP or VEGF, both abundant in cancer cells, the tetrahedra-gated NMOFs are unlocked to release the drug. Enhanced and selective permeation of the DOX-loaded ATP/VEGF-responsive tetrahedra-gated NMOFs into MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells as compared to the reference ATP/VEGF-responsive duplex-gated NMOFs or non-malignant MCF-10A epithelial breast cells is observed. This results in enhanced and selective cytotoxicity of the tetrahedra-gated DOX-loaded NMOFs toward the malignant cells. Additional nano-carriers, consisting of photosensitizer Zn(ii) protoporphyrin IX (Zn(ii)-PPIX)-loaded VEGF-responsive tetrahedra-gated NMOFs, are introduced. The VEGF-triggered unlocking of the NMOFs yields separated G-quadruplex-VEGF aptamer complexes conjugated to the tetrahedra, resulting in the release of loaded Zn(ii)-PPIX. Association of the released Zn(ii)-PPIX to the G-quadruplex structures generates highly fluorescent supramolecular Zn(ii)-PPIX/G-quadruplex VEGF aptamer-tetrahedra structures. The efficient and selective generation of the highly fluorescent Zn(ii)-PPIX/G-quadruplex VEGF aptamer-tetrahedra nanostructures in malignant cells allows the light-induced photosensitized generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to high-efficacy PDT treatment of the malignant cells.

The conversion of methane into alcohols under moderate reaction conditions is a promising technology for converting stranded methane reserves into liquids that can be transported in pipelines and upgraded to value‐added chemicals. We demonstrate that a catalyst consisting of small nickel oxide clusters supported on ceria–zirconia (NiO/CZ) can convert methane to methanol and ethanol in a single, steady‐state process at 723 K using O2 as an abundantly available oxidant. The presence of steam is required to obtain alcohols rather than CO2 as the product of catalytic combustion. The unusual activity of this catalyst is attributed to the synergy between the small Lewis acidic NiO clusters and the redox‐active CZ support, which also stabilizes the small NiO clusters.  相似文献

We continue the investigation of locally testable codes, i.e., error‐correcting codes for which membership of a given word in the code can be tested probabilistically by examining it in very few locations. We give two general results on local testability: First, motivated by the recently proposed notion of robust probabilistically checkable proofs, we introduce the notion of robust local testability of codes. We relate this notion to a product of codes introduced by Tanner and show a very simple composition lemma for this notion. Next, we show that codes built by tensor products can be tested robustly and somewhat locally by applying a variant of a test and proof technique introduced by Raz and Safra in the context of testing low‐degree multivariate polynomials (which are a special case of tensor codes). Combining these two results gives us a generic construction of codes of inverse polynomial rate that are testable with poly‐logarithmically many queries. We note that these locally testable tensor codes can be obtained from any linear error correcting code with good distance. Previous results on local testability, albeit much stronger quantitatively, rely heavily on algebraic properties of the underlying codes. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Random Struct. The recycling of urban solid wastes is a critical point for the “closing supply chains” of many products, mainly when their value cannot be completely recovered after use. In addition to environmental aspects, the process of recycling involves technical, economic, social and political challenges for public management. For most of the urban solid waste, the management of the end-of-life depends on selective collection to start the recycling process. For this reason, an efficient selective collection has become a mainstream tool in the Brazilian National Solid Waste Policy. In this paper, we study effective models that might support the location planning of sorting centers in a medium-sized Brazilian city that has been discussing waste management policies over the past few years. The main goal of this work is to provide an optimal location planning design for recycling urban solid wastes that fall within the financial budget agreed between the municipal government and the National Bank for Economic and Social Development. Moreover, facility planning involves deciding on the best sites for locating sorting centers along the four-year period as well as finding ways to meet the demand for collecting recyclable materials, given that economic factors, consumer behavior and environmental awareness are inherently uncertain future outcomes. To deal with these issues, we propose a deterministic version of the classical capacity facility location problem, and both a two-stage recourse formulation and risk-averse models to reduce the variability of the second-stage costs. Numerical results suggest that it is possible to improve the current selective collection, as well as hedge against data uncertainty by using stochastic and risk-averse optimization models.  相似文献

In the numerical computation of hyperbolic equations it is not practical to use infinite domains. Instead, one truncates the domain with an artificial boundary. In this study we construct a sequence of radiating boundary conditions for wave-like equations. We prove that as the artificial boundary is moved to infinity the solution approaches the solution of the infinite domain as O(r?m?1/2) for the m-th boundary condition. Numerical experiments with problems in jet acoustics verify the practical nature and utility of the boundary conditions.  相似文献
