Direct electrochemical synthesis of N-oxopyridine-2-thionato complexes of nickel(II), cobalt(II) and cobalt(III)

Summary The electrochemical oxidation of anodic metal (nickel or cobalt) in MeCN solutions of 1-hydroxy-2-pyridinethione (HPT) gives [Ni(PT)₂], [Co(PT)₂] or [Co(PT)₃]. When 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or 2,2-bipyridine (bipy) are added to the electrolytic phase the product is a complex, [Ni(PT)₂L] or [Co(PT)₂L] (L = bipy or phen). The i.r., u.v. and ¹H- and ¹³C-n.m.r. spectra of the complexes are discussed.This paper was presented at the 5th Inorganic Chemistry Meeting of the Royal Spanish Chemical Society, Tossa de Mar, Girona, Spain, September 1991.     

Metal-containing ditopic receptors for molecular recognition of diammonium cations

Two new ditopic receptors for α,ω-alkanediyldiammonium cations based on a tetraazamacrocyclic (cyclidene) nickel(II) complex bearing two crown-ether residues were synthesized. The studies of the host-guest interaction between the receptors and a series of α,ω-diammonium salts by NMR titration in acetonitrile-d₃ showed that 1:1 complexes are formed with K_assoc∼10³-10⁵ M⁻¹. Receptor 1 with benzo-15-crown-5 arms showed substantial selectivity in binding of trimethylene- and tetramethylenediammonium dications, and 1-2 orders of magnitude weaker binding of shorter (C₂) or longer (C₅ and C₆) diammonium cations. Receptor 2 with benzo-18-crown-6 arms showed higher affinity to all studied diammonium cations, but the recognition of the length of α,ω-diammonium cations was less pronounced.     

Development and validation of a liquid chromatography-ultraviolet absorbance detection assay using derivatisation for the novel marine anticancer agent ES-285 x HCl [(2S,3R)-2-amino-3-octadecanol hydrochloride] and its pharmaceutical dosage form

ES-285 x HCl [(2S,3R)-2-amino-3-octadecanol hydrochloride] is a novel investigational anticancer agent, which has shown in vitro and in vivo cytotoxic activity against various tumor cell lines with selectivity for certain solid tumors. The pharmaceutical development of ES-285 x HCl warranted the availability of an assay for the quantification and purity determination of ES-285 x HCl active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and its pharmaceutical dosage form. A liquid chromatographic method (LC) comprising of derivatisation of ES-285 x HCl with phenylisothiocyanate and UV-detection was developed. The method was found to be linear, precise and accurate. The assay also proved selectivity as determined by analysing ES-285 x HCl in combination with 15 analogues and in combination with hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin, the excipient used in the lyophilised pharmaceutical dosage form. Stress testing showed that the degradation products were separated from the parent compound, confirming its stability indicating capacity. The method was found robust as determined with design of experiments (DoE), which made it possible to predict system suitability responses in worst case experimental conditions and to define criteria for system suitability testing.     

Polymeric flocculants processing by accelerated electron beams and microwave heating

Results obtained by accelerated electron beam, microwave and simultaneous microwave and electron beam application in the chemistry of acrylamide and acrylic acid copolymers (polymeric flocculants used for wastewater treatment) are presented. Comparative results concerning the molecular weight and Huggins’ constant for the acrylamide and acrylic acid copolymers obtained by classical heating, microwave heating, electron beam irradiation and simultaneous microwave and electron beam treatment are reported. Microwave heating produces high water solubility of the polymeric flocculants but median molecular weight values. Electron beam irradiation gives high molecular weight values but associated with a cross-linked structure (poor water solubility) while microwave energy addition to electron beam energy gives simultaneously high molecular weight values and high water solubility.     

An effective enantioselective approach to the securinega alkaloids: total synthesis of (-)-norsecurinine

[reaction: see text] A highly versatile approach to the enantioselective synthesis of securinega alkaloids is presented. Crucial steps are a palladium-catalyzed enantioselective imide alkylation, a vinylogous Mannich reaction, and a ring-closing metathesis process. Through this strategy, the synthesis of (-)-norsecurinine has been accomplished in nine steps and 11% overall yield.     

Mixed micelles formed by n-octyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside and tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide in aqueous media

Speed of sound, density, conductivity, and fluorescence spectroscopy experiments were run to analyze the mixed aggregation process of a nonionic-cationic surfactant system in aqueous media at 298.15 K. The mixed system comprises a nonionic surfactant, n-octyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside (OBG), and a cationic surfactant, tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C14TAB), with 8 and 14 carbon atoms on the hydrophobic tails, respectively. From these data, the total and partial critical micellar concentrations, the total and partial aggregation numbers, apparent molar volumes and isentropic compressibilities, hydration numbers, and the corresponding changes in the latest properties due to the mixed aggregation process were determined. Pure and mixed micelles were analyzed from a geometrical point of view by determining the packing parameter of the aggregates. Furthermore, the experimental characterization of both the monomeric and micellar phases was completed with a theoretical study of the mixed micellization phenomena studied herein, by means of some of the most relevant theoretical models.     

FIA-fluorimetric determination of adrenaline in pharmaceutical formulations by oxidation with molecular oxygen

The fluorimetric determination of adrenaline is carried out in a continuous-flow assembly and by means of the molecular dissolved oxygen. The sample solution merges with an NaOH stream, then the resulting mixture is heated at 73 °C and led to the flow-cell of the fluorimeter. The flow-assembly is very simple and the procedure is quick (107 samples h^–1) reproducible (R.S.D. 0.6%), selective and suitable to be applied to determination of adrenaline in formulations. Calibrations graph are linear over the ranges 0.05–15 and 20–40 mgl^–1.     

Arylselenenation of conjugated dienes by arylselenenamides in the presence of phosphorus(V) oxyhalides

Arylselenenation of conjugated and non-conjugated dienes by arylselenenamides in the presence of phosphorus(V) oxyhalides has been studied. Reactions with conjugated dienes lead to 1,4-adducts whilst only addition to double bonds takes place in reactions with non-conjugated dienes.     

Addition reactions of ethoxycarbonylnitrene and ethoxycarbonylnitrenium ion to allylic ethers

Ethoxycarbonylnitrene (EtOCON) generated by α-elimination adds cleanly to allylic ethers giving substituted aziridines. Similar addition via nitrenium ion (EtOCONH⁺) gives derivatives of β-amino alcohols.     

Titanocene-catalyzed cascade cyclization of epoxypolyprenes: straightforward synthesis of terpenoids by free-radical chemistry

The titanocene-catalyzed cascade cyclization of epoxypolyenes, which are easily prepared from commercially available polyprenoids, has proven to be a useful procedure for the synthesis of C(10), C(15), C(20), and C(30) terpenoids, including monocyclic, bicyclic, and tricyclic natural products. Both theoretical and experimental evidence suggests that this cyclization takes place in a nonconcerted fashion via discrete carbon-centered radicals. Nevertheless, the termination step of the process seems to be subjected to a kind of water-dependent control, which is unusual in free-radical chemistry. The catalytic cycle is based on the use of the novel combination Me(3)SiCl/2,4,6-collidine to regenerate the titanocene catalyst. In practice this procedure has several advantages: it takes place at room temperature under mild conditions compatible with different functional groups, uses inexpensive reagents, and its end step can easily be controlled to give exocyclic double bonds by simply excluding water from the medium.
