Holographic interferometry was utilized to determine the three orthogonal components of displacement in elastic surface waves. A pulsed ruby laser was used as the light source and techniques to improve its coherence properties are described. Procedures for the formation and reconstruction of the hologram, fringe interpretation, and data reduction and presentation are detailed. The elastic-wave velocities and material constants for pink westerly granite were obtained. Calculations are conducted for unidimensional two-phase flow in nozzles for a wide range of particle concentrations and dimensions. It is established that there exists a maximum in loss of specific momentum due to a lag in particle velocity and temperature relative to the gas. The results obtained are compared with calculations using linearized theory as well as with experimental data. The agreement between calculation and experiment is noted. Equilibrium flow of a two-phase mixture with solidification of liquid particles is considered. Microprojectile methods of genetic engineering sometimes employ a macroprojectile which launches the microprojectiles when it hits a stopping plate. A study has been made of the relationship between the velocities of the macroprojectile and the microprojectile it launches. Macroprojectile velocities were measured using a beam blanking method and the microprojectile velocities were measured with a laser Doppler anemometer. Particles of tungsten, titanium dioxide and silicon carbide were investigated as microprojectiles. The microprojectile velocity was found to depend not only on the macroprojectile velocity but also on the microprojectile size and material, the bond strength with the macroprojectile and the gas flow that develops ahead of the macroprojectile. On average the microprojectile launch velocity was similar to the macroprojectile velocity. However, some tungsten particles had velocities twice this value. Experimental evidence suggests that these higher velocities were caused by early break-way of particles from the macroprojectile followed by further acceleration by aerodynamic drag arising from the gas flow ahead of the macroprojectile.We are especially grateful for the advice of Dr. M. A strain-optic law for a certain class of birefringent fiber-reinforced composite materials is developed. The strain-optic law requires both mechanical and optical characterization of the material. Previous investigations have hypothesized the existence of three independent optical properties for the anisotropic birefringent material. The strain-optic relation developed in this study, however, requires only a single strain-optic coefficient, coupled with four independent mechanical material properties, for prediction of the optical response of a birefringent anisotropic material. Experimental results are presented which show good agreement with the developed strain-optic relation. Finally, the isoclinic parameter is investigated and preliminary evidence is presented which indicates a correspondence between principal-strain direction and optical isoclinic angle. 相似文献

Summary A new type of rotational rheometer is described, and results for two samples of polymethylmethacrylate are reported. The rheometer consists of a Couette system with fixed inner cylinder, supported at both ends for torque measurements. Pressure may be varied up to 500 bar. At present, there are sufficient solutions of the problem of free-molecular gas flow through a short cylindrical channel, for example, [1–3]. In intermediate flow conditions, for Knudsen number Kn 1, solutions have been obtained for the limiting cases: an infinitely long channel [4] and a channel of zero length (an aperture) [5]. However, no solution is known for short channels for Kn 1.
