Modal parameters of two incomplete and complete guitars differing in the bracing pattern of the soundboard

Similarities and differences in vibrational behavior of two guitars having a symmetric Torres bracing pattern and an asymmetric pattern forming a lattice on a soundboard are investigated by means of the modal analysis technique and laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV) measurements. Instruments are investigated before and after a bridge and strings assembling (i.e., they are incomplete or complete). The bracing pattern and the absence/presence of the bridge and strings have some effect on modal frequencies and mode shapes. The bracing pattern does not affect the sequence of at least first three low frequency mode shapes of incomplete/complete instruments but affects their modal frequencies. Depending on frequency, the bridge behaves either as a rigid or a flexible structure.     

Ultralow phase noise microwave generation with an Er:fiber-based optical frequency divider

We present an optical frequency divider based on a 200 MHz repetition rate Er:fiber mode-locked laser that, when locked to a stable optical frequency reference, generates microwave signals with absolute phase noise that is equal to or better than cryogenic microwave oscillators. At 1 Hz offset from a 10 GHz carrier, the phase noise is below -100 dBc/Hz, limited by the optical reference. For offset frequencies >10 kHz, the phase noise is shot noise limited at -145 dBc/Hz. An analysis of the contribution of the residual noise from the Er:fiber optical frequency divider is also presented.     

Tiling Convex Polygons with Congruent Equilateral Triangles

We study the sets $\mathcal{T}_{v}=\{m \in\{1,2,\ldots\}: \mbox{there is a convex polygon in }\mathbb{R}^{2}\mbox{ that has }v\mbox{ vertices and can be tiled with $m$ congruent equilateral triangles}\}$ , v=3,4,5,6. $\mathcal{T}_{3}$ , $\mathcal{T}_{4}$ , and $\mathcal{T}_{6}$ can be quoted completely. The complement $\{1,2,\ldots\} \setminus\mathcal{T}_{5}$ of $\mathcal{T}_{5}$ turns out to be a subset of Euler’s numeri idonei. As a consequence, $\{1,2,\ldots\} \setminus\mathcal{T}_{5}$ can be characterized with up to two exceptions, and a complete characterization is given under the assumption of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis.     

A note on the dynamical zeta function of general toral endomorphisms

It is well-known that the Artin-Mazur dynamical zeta function of a hyperbolic or quasi-hyperbolic toral automorphism is a rational function, which can be calculated in terms of the eigenvalues of the corresponding integer matrix. We give an elementary proof of this fact that extends to the case of general toral endomorphisms without change. The result is a closed formula that can be calculated by integer arithmetic only. We also address the functional equation and the relation between the Artin-Mazur and Lefschetz zeta functions.

Deeply virtual Compton scattering off nuclei

We consider the hard leptoproduction of a photon off nuclei up to spin-1. As a new result we present here the general azimuthal angular dependence of the differential cross section for a spin-1 target. Its twist-two Fourier coefficients of the interference and squared deeply virtual Compton scattering amplitude are evaluated in leading order approximation of perturbation theory in terms of generalized parton distributions, while the pure Bethe-Heitler cross section is exactly calculated in terms of electromagnetic form factors. Relying on a simple model for the nucleon generalized parton distribution H, which describes the existing DVCS data for a proton target, we estimate the size of unpolarized cross sections, beam and longitudinal target spin as well as unpolarized charge asymmetries for the present fixed target experiments with nuclei. These estimates are confronted with preliminary HERMES data for deuterium and neon.Received: 1 October 2003, Published online: 3 December 2003     

Speaking rate of adventitiously deaf male cochlear implant candidates

No objective group data on speaking rate or speaking duration have been reported on the speech of adventitiously profoundly hearing-impaired adults. Results of the present study showed that speaking rate, i.e., number of syllables per second, was significantly slower and speaking duration was significantly longer for 25 adventitiously profoundly hearing-impaired adult male cochlear implant candidates than for 10 normal-hearing control subjects. The factors of length of time since onset of profound hearing loss and hearing aid use did not significantly affect speaking rate. Based on these objective data, a rationale and method are presented for aural rehabilitation of the profoundly hearing-impaired who exhibit speaking rate abnormalities.
