The proposition is examined that adhesion between cells of animal tissues, and between cells and their extracellular matrix, is brought about by specific molecules present at cell-surfaces. Evidence is surveyed which has begun to emerge from the use of antibodies which inhibit or reverse adhesion. Putative cell-adhesion molecules in cellular slime-moulds and cells of chick and mouse embryos have been identified by their ability to neutralize the adhesion-inhibiting activity of monovalent fragments of polyspecific antibodies. In some instances antibodies have also been used to investigate the role of the cell-adhesion molecules in morphogenetic phenomena. A possible parallel is discussed between the effects of calcium ions on the cell-adhesion molecule uvomorulin from mouse blastomeres, and its effects on certain other cell-adhesion molecules.Although the role of fibronectin in promoting attachment and spreading of cells on artificial substrates and on denatured collagen is firmly established, there is little evidence that this glycoprotein is involved in direct intercellular adhesion. The observation that cells spread on adsorbed fibronectin, whereas binding of individual fibronectin molecules to cells is difficult to demonstrate may merely indicate that fibronectin is a relatively weak ligand for cell-surfaces. It is suggested that rather than being a necessary intermediate in the adhesion of cells to collagen, fibronectin may form matrix in its own right which shares with native collagen the ability to promote cell-attachment and spreading.The long-held view that cell-surface oligosaccharides act as receptors in cell-adhesion appears still to be largely unsubstantiated. However the poorly adhesive properties of cells from many different lines with glycosylation defects strongly suggest N-linked oligosaccharides of glycoproteins are involved in some way as yet not determined. 相似文献

Micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) of highly hydrophobic compounds is generally difficult using sodium dodecyl sulfate micellar solutions. The polymeric surfactant, polysodium undecyl sulfate (poly-SUS) has been used to separate moderately to highly hydrophobic polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners by MEKC in the absence of cyclodextrins. Parameters such as concentration of acetonitrile (ACN), polymeric surfactant concentration, and the effect of pH were examined. Optimum MEKC conditions to get baseline resolution of nine PCBs was 7.5 mM borate in 40% (v/v) ACN fraction buffered at pH 9.2 using 0.5% (w/v) poly-SUS. The applied voltage was 30 kV and the temperature was maintained at 25 degrees C. Elution order for each PCB congener was found to be dependent on the degree of chlorination and hydrophobic character. 相似文献

Nonlinear-response theory of nonequilibrium molecular-dynamics simulation algorithms is considered under the imposition of an arbitrary steady-state flow field. It is demonstrated that the SLLOD and DOLLS algorithms cannot be used for general flows, although the SLLOD algorithm is rigorous for planar Couette flow. Following the same procedure used to establish SLLOD as the valid algorithm for planar Couette flow [D. J. Evans and E. P. Morriss, Phys. Rev. A 30, 1528 (1984)], it is demonstrated that the p-SLLOD algorithm is valid for arbitrary flows and produces the correct nonlinear response of the viscous pressure tensor. 相似文献

Reactions of salicylaldehydes with boronate ester derivatives of aniline have been examined. Addition of these Schiff base ligands to palladium acetate or Na2PdCl4 afforded novel boron-containing trans-bis(N-arylsalicylaldiminato) palladium complexes.Condensation of salicylaldehyde (2-HOC6H4C(O)H) with H2NC6H4Bpin (pin=1,2-O2C2Me4) afforded the boron-containing Schiff bases, 2-HOC6H4C(H)=NC6H4Bpin (1–3a). Similar reactivity with 2-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzaldehyde and 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde gave the corresponding Schiff bases (1-3b) and (1-3c), respectively. Reaction of Schiff bases (2) and (3) with palladium acetate or Na2PdCl4 afforded complexes of the type PdL2
(4,5), where L=deprotonated Schiff base. The molecular structure of the nitro-salicylaldehyde 4-Bpin palladium complex (5b) was characterized by an X-ray diffraction study. Electron spin resonance (ESR) and magnetic-susceptibility measurements on the Li1+xTi2?xO4 spinel system () indicate the presence of two types of localized moments in this material. In both cases, an unpaired electron is trapped as a Ti3+ ion in a crystal field that is predominantly octahedral, but with a strong tetragonal component. This type of crystal field cannot arise in the stoichiometric spinel. We propose two types of defect in the title spinel system: an oxygen vacancy and a hydroxyl ion. Unpaired electrons are trapped as Ti3+ ions adjacent to these defects, and it is argued that the strong tetragonal field is associated with the formation of a static (TiO)+ ion by a displacement of the titanium ion from the defect. Spin relaxation occurs via a thermal ionization of the trapped electron that appears to be associated with a static-dynamic transition in the titanium-ion displacement. 相似文献
