[1.1.1]Propellane is the ubiquitous precursor to bicyclo[1.1.1]pentanes (BCPs), motifs of high value in pharmaceutical and materials research. The classical Lewis representation of this molecule places an inter-bridgehead C–C bond along its central axis; ‘strain relief’-driven cleavage of this bond is commonly thought to enable reactions with nucleophiles, radicals and electrophiles. We propose that this broad reactivity profile instead derives from σ–π-delocalization of electron density in [1.1.1]propellane. Using ab initio and DFT calculations, we show that its reactions with anions and radicals are facilitated by increased delocalization of electron density over the propellane cage during addition, while reactions with cations involve charge transfer that relieves repulsion inside the cage. These results provide a unified framework to rationalize experimental observations of propellane reactivity, opening up opportunities for the exploration of new chemistry of [1.1.1]propellane and related strained systems that are useful building blocks in organic synthesis.

Reaction of a stoichiometric equivalent of the zinc-dithiolene complex, (tmeda)ZnS2C2(COOMe)2 (tmeda = tetramethylethylenediamine), with (MeCN)2PdCl2 results in a 1:1 homoleptic dithiolene that forms the hexanuclear cluster [PdS2C2(COOMe)2]6 (1). X-ray structure analysis of 1 indicates a Pd6S12 core comprised of six face-centered palladium atoms and 12 edge-centered sulfur atoms situated on an imaginary approximate cube. Complex 1 undergoes four distinct and reversible one-electron redox steps in dichloromethane at -186, -484, -1174, and -1524 mV versus a standard calomel electrode (ferrocenium+/ferrocene redox couple 409 mV). The two-electron reduction product of 1, [Bu4N]2[(PdS2C2(COOMe)2)6] (2), has been chemically isolated and characterized.  相似文献

Abstract— Two simple methods of phototaxis measurements have been applied to study the effects of ionophores on the negative phototactic response in Stentor coeruleus. The inhibitory effects of Ca2+-ionophore (A23187), Ca2+-blocking agent (Ruthenium Red), and K+ -ionophore (valinomycin) on photo-taxis have been determined. Results suggest that the influx of Ca2+ plays a transducing role in the phototaxis of Stentor.  相似文献

It is shown how stable, nonaqueous suspensions of fully exfoliated smectite clays such as Laponite and montmorillonite can be obtained. Suspensions in toluene and in a branched aliphatic solvent (polydecene) were characterized using elemental analysis, rheometry, and small-angle X-ray scattering. For Laponite, stable suspensions were obtained by adsorbing a dichain poly(isobutylene) based stabilizer to the particles. This approach did not result in full exfoliation for montmorillonite particles, possibly because the stabilizer was able to connect individual clay sheets at the edges during the treatment process. Instead, a quaternary ammonium surfactant, dimethyl dioctadecylammonium bromide (DODAB), was first adsorbed to the clay. Subsequently, adsorption of the poly(isobutylene) based stabilizer to this pretreated clay resulted in fully exfoliated suspensions of montmorillonite. Suspensions of clay particles treated only with DODAB have been studied by several authors before and are included in this study for comparison. A detailed discussion of the suspension behavior of the different clay samples is given. The suspension routes presented here may enable further studies of the structure and flow behavior of suspensions of thin, flexible clay platelets as a function of aspect ratio.  相似文献

We have prepared novel room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) with trimethylsilylmethyl (TMSiM)-substituted imidazolium cations and compared the properties of these liquids with those for which the TMSiM group is replaced by the analogous neopentyl group. The ionic liquids are prepared with both tetrafluoroborate (BF(4)(-)) and bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (NTf(2)(-)) anions paired with the imidazolium cations. At 22 degrees C, the TMSiM-substituted imidazolium ILs have shear viscosities that are reduced by a factor of 1.6 and 7.4 relative to the alkylimidazolium ILs for the NTf(2)(-) and BF(4)(-) anions, respectively. To understand the effect of silicon substitution on the viscosity, the charge densities have been calculated by using density functional theory electronic structure calculations. The ultrafast intermolecular, vibrational, and orientational dynamics of these RTILs have been measured by using femtosecond optical heterodyne-detected Raman-induced Kerr effect spectroscopy (OHD-RIKES). The intermolecular dynamical spectrum provides an estimate of the strength of interactions between the ions in the RTILs, and provides a qualitative explanation for the observed reduction in viscosity for the silicon-substituted RTILs.  相似文献

Summary The Bending Corrected Rotating Linear Model (BCRLM), developed by Hayes and Walker, is a simple approximation to the true multidimensional scattering problem for reactions of the type: A + BC AB + C. While the BCRLM method is simpler than methods designed to obtain accurate three-dimensional quantum scattering results, this turns out to be a major advantage in terms of our benchmarking studies. The computer code used to obtain BCRLM scattering results is written for the most part in standard FORTRAN and has been ported to several scalar, vector, and parallel architecture computers including the IBM 3090-600J, the Cray XMP and YMP, the Ardent Titan, IBM RISC System/6000, Convex C-1 and the MIPS 2000. Benchmark results will be reported for each of these machines with an emphasis on comparing the scalar, vector, and parallel performance for the standard code with minimum modifications. Detailed analysis of the mapping of the BCRLM approach onto both shared and distributed memory parallel architecture machines indicates the importance of introducing several key changes in the basic strategy and algorithms used to calculate scattering results. This analysis of the BCRLM approach provides some insights into optimal strategies for mapping three-dimensional quantum scattering methods, such as the Parker-Pack method, onto shared or distributed memory parallel computers.  相似文献

Total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy is used to measure the dissociation kinetic rate of fluorescein-labeled epidermal growth factor from its specific receptors on the surface of intact but mildly fixed A431 human epidermoid cells in culture. Prior applications of TIRF microscopy have been limited to nonreceptor binding or to model membrane systems. The evanescent field excites fluorescence selectively at the surface of the cell proximal to the coverslip. Prismless epiillumination TIR is employed to avoid space limitations and is achieved by passing the excitation laser beam through a high (1.4)-aperture objective so that the light is incident at the glass/water interface beyond the critical angle. Long-term focus is maintained by a special feedback system. Of the possible effects that can influence the time course of the postbleach fluorescence recoveries—the EGF/receptor dissociation ratek 2, the bulk solution diffusion rate of EGF, and the cell surface motion of the receptors—we infer that the dissociation ratek 2 dominates. Several fitting schemes are compared and indicate the presence of a multiplicity of values fork 2, ranging from about 0.05 to 0.004 s–1, with an average value of about 0.012 s–1. These results compare well with values previously obtained by radiolabel/washing techniques. The significance of the results in terms of kinetic models and the advantages of the TIRF technique for these sorts of measurements are discussed.  相似文献
