Phylogenetic analysis and homology modelling of <Emphasis Type=Italic>Paracentrotus lividus</Emphasis> nectin

The extracellular matrix protein Pl-nectin, a 210-kDa homodimer originally purified from sea urchin eggs, plays a crucial role in cell adhesion and embryonic morphogenesis. The compiled cDNA sequence, obtained by RT-PCR primer walking and 3′ RACE, identified a 984aa product containing a 23aa signal peptide and including all six internal peptides identified by protein microsequencing. The protein is a new member of the galactose-binding protein superfamily as it consists of six 151–156aa-long tandemly repeated domains (D1–D6), homologous to the discoidin-like domains, also known as F5/8-type C domains. Based on homology modelling, we present a three-dimensional structure (3D) for D5, identified as the prototype domain. The molecular modelling of the assembled Pl-nectin homodimer accounts for a Pl-nectin quaternary structure composed of two 105-kDa C-shaped monomers linked by a S–S bridge. The presence of an LDT motif between the first and the second exposed loops of the D2 domain suggests the binding of Pl-nectin to an integrin receptor. Altogether, the in silico analysis described here is consistent with previous biochemical reports and offers a basis for predictions to be experimentally tested.     

Numerical study on K/S/Cl release during devolatilization of pulverized biomass at high temperature

In this paper, the interaction between different organic and inorganic K/S/Cl compounds in the solid structure of biomass is studied and a model is presented to predict the temporal release of K_g, HCl, CH₃Cl, KCl, KOH, K₂SO₄ and SO₂ from biomass devolatilization. Four types of pulverized biomass are chosen from literature, two of which have no chlorine content and two with chlorine content in lower stoichiometry to potassium. The results of the model are compared with the experimental measurements. In the presence of chlorine, KCl, HCl and K_g were found to be the dominant chlorine and potassium species. In the absence of chlorine, K_g dominates the release of potassium. KOH and K₂SO₄ release into the gas phase towards the end of devolatilization due to the overlapping with char combustion. SO₂ is the main sulfur species released into the gas phase. The model is coupled with a CFD solver where the gas phase chemistry of the K/S/Cl system can be studied using available chemical mechanisms for these species.     

A one-parameter family of hamiltonian structures for the KP hierarchy and a continuous deformation of the nonlinear WKP algebra

The KP hierarchy is hamiltonian relative to a one-parameter family of Poisson structures obtained from a generalized Adler map in the space of formal pseudodifferential symbols with noninteger powers. The resulting W-algebra is a one-parameter deformation of W_KP admitting a central extension for generic values of the parameter, reducing naturally to W _n for special values of the parameter, and contracting to the centrally extended W₁₊, W and further truncations. In the classical limit, all algebras in the one-parameter family are equivalent and isomorphic tow _KP. The reduction induced by setting the spin-one field to zero yields a one-parameter deformation of which contracts to a new nonlinear algebra of the W-type.Address after October 1993: Queen Mary and Westfield College, UK     

Quantum nonintegrability and the classical limit for usp(4) systems

We investigate the transition from integrability to chaos in a system built of usp(4) elements, both in the quantum case and in its classical limit, obtained using coherent states. This algebraic Hamiltonian consists in an integrable term plus a nonlinear perturbation, and we see that the level spacing distribution for the quantum system is well approximated by the Berry-Robnik-Brody distribution, and accordingly the classical limit displays mixed dynamics.     

Evolution of the correlation between orthogonal polarization patterns in broad-area lasers

We measure polarization-resolved instantaneous patterns in a large-aspect ratio quasi-isotropic Nd:YAG laser. High correlation between the instantaneous orthogonal polarization patterns recorded at the earlier stages of the laser pulse has been found due to the strong cross saturation between both polarization modes.
