Polymeric Thioxanthones as Potential Anticancer and Radiotherapy Agents

Thioxanthone (TX) and its derivatives, which are widely used as photoinitiators in UV curing technology, hold promising research interest in biological applications. In particular, the use of TXs as anticancer agent has recently been manifested as an outstanding additional property of this class of molecules. Incorporation of TX molecules into specially designed polymers widens their practical use in such applications. In this study, two water‐soluble, biocompatible, and stable polymers, namely poly(vinyl alcohol) and poly(ethylene glycol), possessing TX moieties at the side chains and chain ends, respectively, are prepared and used as anticancer and radiotherapy agents. The findings confirm that both polymers are potential candidates for therapeutic agents as they possess useful features including water‐solubility, radiosensitizer effect, and anticancer activity in a polymeric scaffold.

     

Quinoxaline‐based D‐A conjugated polymers for organic solar cells: Probing the effect of quinoxaline side chains and fluorine substitution on the power conversion efficiency

We describe the successful synthesis of four novel donor‐acceptor (D‐A) type copolymers, referred to as PQxBT , PQxFBT , TQxBT , and TQxFBT . The effects of using a fluorinated bithiophene (FBT) and varying the side‐chain moieties tethered to the quinoxaline (Qx) unit (electron‐withdrawing group in the polymer backbone) on the physical properties and photovoltaic performance were investigated. Specifically, the four polymers were synthesized using either alkoxyphenyl (P) or alkylthiophene (T) units anchored to the quinoxaline in the polymer backbone. The FBT‐bearing polymers, PQxFBT and TQxFBT , displayed more redshifted absorption spectra and higher crystallinity owing to the greater planarity of their polymer backbone as compared to the non‐fluorinated polymers. The TQxFBT copolymer, equipped with both the alkylthiophene side chains and FBT, exhibited face‐on orientation in film state and a well‐mixed nanophase morphology in TQxFBT :PC₇₁BM blend films. The photovoltaic device fabricated from TQxFBT :PC₇₁BM exhibited the highest power conversion efficiency of 4.18%. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. A novel method for the bromination of thiophenes

A novel, fast and convenient method for the bromination of thiophenes and oligothiophenes with N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) using ultrasonic irradiation is elaborated. The yield of bromothiophenes strongly depends on the initial thiophene structure and nature of the solvent.     

Secondary metabolites, cytotoxic response by neutral red retention and protective effect against H2O2 induced cytotoxicity of Sedum caespitosum

The EtOAc, n-BuOH and H20 subextracts of the crude MeOH extract of the aerial parts of Sedum caespitosum (cav.) Dc. were screened for cytotoxicity using the neutral red assay in Chinese hamster ovary cells as well as their protective effect against H2O2 induced cytotoxicity in human red blood cells. While the extracts did not show cytotoxicity, they displayed a protective effect compared to a blank and ascorbic acid. Gallic acid (1), kaempferol 3-O-alpha-rhamnopyranoside (2), quercetin 3-O-beta-glucopyranoside (3), quercetin 3-O-alpha-rhamnopyranoside (4) and myricetin 3-O-alpha-rhamnopyranoside (5) were isolated from the EtOAc extract and identified by 1D- and 2D-NMR. The protective effects of the isolated compounds against H2O2 induced cytotoxicity in human red blood cells were evaluated and 5 was the most active.     

PREPARATION AND MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF POLY(SCHIFF BASE) COMPLEXES CONTAINING PHENANTHROLINE UNITS

Copper-catalyzed synthesis of phenols from aryl halides and 4-methoxylbenzyl alcohol

A catalytic method was developed to synthesize substituted phenols from the corresponding aryl bromides and chlorides under mild conditions (yields = 34–92%). 4-Methoxylbenzyl alcohol was used as water surrogate and CuI/3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline was used as catalyst to achieve the C–O cross-coupling.     

The chemical constituents of the tissue culture cells of Daphne giraldii cullus

Three compounds were isolated from the tissue culture cells of Daphne giraldii cullus,their structures were identified as daphneolone(1),S-(+)-1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-3-hydroxy-5-phenyl-1-pentanone(2),S-(+)-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3- hydroxy-5-phenyl-1-pentanone(3),and among them,2 was a new compound,3 was a novel natural product.     

A new fluorescent particle prepared by chemical stabilized phycobilisome

Natural phycobilisomes(PBSs) were isolated and purified from a red macroalga,Polysiphonia urceolata,by multi-step of sucrose gradient centrifugation,and were chemically stabilized by small molecule cross-linker formaldehyde.The stabilized PBSs showed similar absorption and fluorescent properties at room temperature compared to natural PBSs and kept a steady F672/F580 value during more than 3 months of storage in 0.45 mol/L phosphate buffer(pH 6.8) or at low temperature at 77 K.The stabilized PBS migrated...     

Polymer conformation via magnetic field modulation of delayed fluorescence

Magnetic-field modulation of delayed fluorescence from poly(2-vinylnaphthalen) in a low-temperature glass at 77 K is reported. The observations are interpreted in terms of local ordering of the naphthalene chromophores with their normal axes aligned approximately parallel to one another.
