Hyperfine interactions and lattice distortion of the F center in KCl, NaCl and LiCl crystals

Detailed embedded-cluster quantum-chemistry (ROHF, UHF and UMP2) calculations of hyperfine interactions for the F center in KCl, NaCl and LiCl are presented. Our values for the isotropic hyperfine interaction show a good general agreement with experiments. We show that a careful treatment of the lattice environment, local lattice distortion, spin polarization and correlation are important for this good agreement.     

Linked scans of peptides and protein digests: amino acid sequence determination of components of complex mixtures

Two-sector linked-scan analysis of an unpurified proteolytic digest of a pyruvate decarboxylase enzyme (60,000 Da) has allowed the discovery and assignment of an amino-terminal post-translational modification and processing event. A difference in amino acid sequence from that predicted by a recently published nucleotide sequence has also been found. These results illustrate both the use and considerable potential of linked-scan methods for the analysis of complex biopolymer mixtures.

The mechanism of the addition reaction of TeCl₄ to alkynes was indirectly established by the detection of TeCl₃ centered radicals using EPR spin trapping, ESI-MS and ESI-MS/MS characterization.     

Total curvatures of geodesic spheres associated to quadratic curvature invariants

Total scalar curvatures of geodesic spheres obtained by integrating the second-order scalar invariants of the curvature tensor are investigated. The first terms in their power-series expansions are derived and these results are used to characterize the two-point homogeneous spaces among Riemannian manifolds with adapted holonomy. A comparative study in resonant light scattering between spherical and cylindrical dielectric hosts with a metallic inclusion

We show that dielectric spherical and cylindrical particles contaminated with a metallic inclusion have similar spectral resonant behavior. Both geometries show resonance suppression as the position of the inclusion varies. Moreover, it was theoretically observed that the spherical particle suppresses a resonant mode earlier than the cylindrical one. Based on semi-classical arguments, a physical interpretation of this fact is given. In addition, a comment is also made regarding Wiscombe's criteria for estimating the size of the coefficient matrix used to solve the truncated non-homogeneous set of linear equations related to this problem.
