Pseudo-epitaxial C60 films prepared by a hot-wall method

We have used both reflection-geometry and grazing-incidence-geometry X-ray scattering to study thin films of C₆₀ evaporated onto mica substrates via a hot-wall technique. The growth mode yields close-packed C₆₀ planes, which are parallel to the substrate surface and which exhibit out-of-plane correlation lengths of 850 Å. In the film plane the C₆₀ is at best pseudo-epitaxial, with a 0.9° distribution of crystallite orientations, a 450 Å in-plane correlation length, and a 3.7% lattice mismatch, better than obtained by other thin film techniques but far from the accepted definition of single crystal thin film epitaxy.     

A posteriori error estimation with finite element methods of lines for one-dimensional parabolic systems

Summary Consider the solution of one-dimensional linear initial-boundary value problems by a finite element method of lines using a piecewiseP ^th -degree polynomial basis. A posteriori estimates of the discretization error are obtained as the solutions of either local parabolic or local elliptic finite element problems using piecewise polynomial corrections of degreep+1 that vanish at element ends. Error estimates computed in this manner are shown to converge in energy under mesh refinement to the exact finite element discretization error. Aziridinylketones and their cyclic anils. 12

We have measured the PMR spectra of 5, 7-diaryl-1, 4-diazabicyclo[4. ].O]hept-4-enes. We have studied the structure of the 5-(4-nitrophenyl)-7-phenyl derivative by x-ray diffraction. We show that the six-membered heterocycle has the half-chair form. The 6-H and 7-H protons of the aziridine ring are trans, while the 7-aryl is exo relative to the six-membered ring. Hydroxyl-containing mesogens. Synthesis and liquid-crystalline properties of 2-o-hydroxyarylpyrimidines

We have synthesized 5-alkyl(alkoxy)-2-(o-lzydroxy-p-alkoxyphenyl)pyrimidines and considered the effect of the OH group on the inesomorphism. Methylphosphonothionates of N-(β-hydroxypropyl)anabasine — Synthesis,structure, and sensitivity of cholinesterases to them

The synthesis has been effected of alkyl anabasinoprop-2-yl and alkyl piperidinoprop-2-yl methylphosphonothionates. It has been shown by¹H,¹³C and³¹P NMR spectroscopies that the anabasine derivatives exist in solution as four diastereomeric forms. The kinetics of the interaction of the compounds synthesized with two types of cholinesterases has been studied.A. S.
