Measurement of the K β /K α ratio for muon alpha sticking X-rays in muon catalyzed d-t fusion at the RIKEN-RAL Muon Facility

At the RIKEN-RAL Muon Facility, μ^- to α sticking K _β X-rays were observed for the first time taking advantage of the pulsed beam structure. The precision of the present measurements was insufficient to distinguish between theoretical models, however the observed K _β /K _α X-ray intensity ratio tends to be smaller than most of these theoretical predictions. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Positive muon data analysis at ISIS

The pulsed surface muon beam of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is well suited to performing μSR measurements in zero and low magnetic fields with the longitudinal set-up. In this paper we describe our data analysis procedure and the effect of the collimation on the spectra. The determination of the efficiency ratio of the telescopes is discussed. We point out that for some measurements it is important to take into account the muon beam structure properly.     

Tritium gas handling system for muon catalyzed fusion research at RIKEN-RAL muon facility

For muon catalyzed fusion (μCF) experiments at RIKEN-RAL muon facility, a tritium gas handling system for a high purity D–T target, free from ³ component, has been constructed to perform precise measurements of α-sticking probability in the μCF cycle. The system has been constructed to enable us to purify the target D–T gas by removing ³He component, to adjust the D/T mixing ratio, and to measure the hydrogen isotope components at the experiment site. The whole performance has been confirmed and a tritium gas with the inventory of 56 TBq (1500 Ci) has been operated in the system. Effect of molecular motion on electron spin phase memory times for copper(II) complexes in doped solids

Electron spin phase memory times,T _m, as a function of temperature were measured for Cu(II) bis(diethyldithiocarbamate), Cu(Et₂dtc)₂; Cu(II) bis(diethyldithiophosphate), Cu(Et₂dtp)₂; Cu(II) bis(diphenyldithiophosphate), Cu(Ph₂dtp)₂; Cu(II) tetratolylporphyrin, CuTTP; vanadyl 5-(4-carboxyphenyl)-10,15,20-tritolylporphyrin, VOTTP-COOH; and Ag(II) tetratolylporphyrin, AgTTP, doped into powdered samples of closely-related diamagnetic hosts. For the three metalloporphyrins, the electron spin relaxation rate (1/T _m) increased monotonically with increasing temperature. However the temperature dependence of the relaxation rate was not monotonic for the three other Cu(II) complexes. For Cu(Et₂dtc)₂ and Cu(Et₂dtp)₂ the temperature dependence of 1/T _m between about 85 and 130 K is attributed to the effects of methyl rotation, with activation energies of 1.0 kcal/mole. Between 120 and 250 K the 1/T _m data for Cu(Ph₂dtp)₂ exhibit effects that are attributed to motion of the phenyl rings.     

Construction of Riken-ral muon facility at ISIS and advanced μSR

By utilizing the intense pulsed proton beam available at the ISIS facility of RAL, the new muon facility project of an advanced superconducting muon channel funded by the RIKEN is now under construction. The new facility, by adopting the superconducting solenoid system, will produce the strongest backward decay pulsed ⁺ or ^–in the momentum range from 20 MeV/c to 120 MeV/c. Also, by adopting the pulsed magnetic kicker, each one of two muon pulses will be supplied to two extraction channels simultaneously. Various important muon science experiments including advanced pulsed ^–SR andmu ⁺SR experiments will be realized.     

Muon level crossing resonance in aluminium

Cross relaxation between implanted positive muons and²⁷Al nuclei in Al metal, lightly doped with Cu to impede the muon diffusion, shows weak resonances at 2.3 and 4.0 mT. Assignment of these to polarization transfervia the 1/2 3/2 and 3/2 5/2 transitions of the (J=5/2) spins leads to a quadrupole coupling constante ²qQ/h=1.8(1) MHz,i.e. an electric field gradient on Al nuclei immediately adjacent to the muon siteq=0.048(3) a.u., with a small departure from axial symmetry.     

Electron spin relaxation rates for nitridochromium(V) tetratolylporphyrin and nitridochromium(V) octaethylporphyrin in Frozen solution

T ₁ andT _m for nitridochromium(V) tetratolylporphyrin and nitridochromium(V) octaethylporphyrin were measured by saturation recovery and electron spin echo EPR, respectively, between 10 and 130 K. The temperature dependence of 1/T ₁ was similar to that observed previously for chromium(V) complexes of hydroxycarboxylic acids. The spin lattice relaxation rate was faster in the perpendicular plane (the porphyrin plane) than normal to this plane. 1/T _m was orientation dependent with the fastest rates observed for orientations intermediate between the principal axes. The orientation dependence of 1/T _m increased with increasing temperature and decreasing rigidity of the matrix, and is attributed to molecular motion.
