Analysis in terms of valence-bond structures of environmental effects on the electronic structure of molecules

Environmental effects on the electronic structure of molecules caused by external perturbations are studied by means of an expansion of molecular orbital wave functions into valence-bond (VB ) wave functions. Applications are carried out to the π system of butadiene, hydroxyethylene, acrolein, and carbonyl oxide and also to the full electronic system of water. The external perturbations considered are uniform electric fields, nonuniform electric fields, and reaction fields created by solvents. A different behavior is found between nonpolar and polar species in the presence of solvents. Some consequences on the behavior of molecules under the influence of the different electric fields are discussed.

Single production of fourth-family quarks at the LHC

We study the single production of fourth-family quarks through the process pp→Q′jX at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We have calculated the decay widths and branching ratios of the fourth-family quarks (b′ and t′) in the mass range 300–800 GeV. The cross sections for the signal and background processes have been calculated in a Monte Carlo framework. It is shown that the LHC can discover single t′ and b′ quarks if the CKM matrix elements |V _t′q |,|V _qb′|≳0.01.     

Simple high-performance liquid chromatographic method for determination of atropine and obidoxime in a parenteral injection device

Atropine and obidoxime in a parenteral injection device are determined by simple HPLC method simultaneously without any pretreatment at 228 nm. The relative standard deviations (R.S.D.) were below 1.6% for the compounds. The correlation coefficient was greater than 0.999 for both compounds in the calibration range. The recoveries at 5 mg/L concentration averaged as 95% for atropine and 102% for obidoxime. The uncertainty of the measurements for atropine and obidoxime was 2.8% and 2.4%, respectively.     

Preparation and characterization of 1,2,3‐triazole‐cured polymers from endcapped azides and alkynes

Fourteen commercial polyols have been characterized by GPC, NMR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. From these, eight corresponding tosylates, six nitrate esters, seven mesylates, 13 alkynes, and 14 azides have been prepared and all these derivatives have been fully characterized. Five alkyne monomers and eight azide monomers were also prepared. Twelve alkynes and 13 azides (functionality 2–4) were combined in 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition reactions under neat conditions to prepare triazole‐cured polymers, avoiding any heavy metal catalyst. Characterization by NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and gel permeation chromatography indicated triazole polymers 14 , 22 , 23 , 28 , and 30 with degrees of polymerization of 17–28 to be the best candidates for future work. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fast-atom bombardment tandem mass spectrometry of phosphohydroxylysine and related phosphohydroxy amino acids

Phosphohydroxylysine a compound found in the urine of two patients with a possible inborn error of hydroxylysine metabolism, and related phosphohydroxycompounds were investigated with fast-atom bombardment tandem mass spectrometry techniques. This resulted in a reliable and quick identification method for phospho amino acids in general.     

Synthesis of Boltorn 1,2,3‐triazole dendrimers by click chemistry

Second‐, third‐, and fourth‐generation hyperbranched aliphatic polyols namely Boltorn® H20, Boltorn H30, and Boltorn H40 were endcapped with azido and activated acetylenic groups in good to excellent yields (75–95%) following an acid catalyzed procedure. The resultant terminally functionalized dendritic azido and acetylenic groups undergo 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition using methyl (or ethyl) propiolate and benzyl azide, respectively, under catalytic or noncatalytic conditions below 40 °C to yield 1,2,3‐triazole dendrimeric polymers in 82–95% yield, under extremely mild conditions that could be applied for compounds sensitive to acid, base, or heat. The dendritic azido and activated acetylenic derivatives may act as novel scaffolds to tune the mechanical properties of different polymers. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
