Depth-dependent magnetism in MnSb(0001) epitaxial films has been studied by combining experimental methods with different surface specificities: polarized neutron reflectivity, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), x-ray resonant magnetic scattering and spin-polarized low energy electron microscopy (SPLEEM). A native oxide ~4.5?nm thick covers air-exposed samples which increases the film's coercivity. HCl etching efficiently removes this oxide and in situ surface treatment of etched samples enables surface magnetic contrast to be observed in SPLEEM. A thin Sb capping layer prevents oxidation and preserves ferromagnetism throughout the MnSb film. The interpretation of Mn L(3,2) edge XMCD data is discussed. 相似文献

In this article, a new technique we call Beam Action Spectroscopy via Inelastic Scattering (BASIS) is demonstrated. BASIS takes advantage of the sensitivity of rotational state distributions in a supersonic molecular beam to inelastic scattering within the beam. We exploit BASIS to achieve increased sensitivity in two very different types of experiments. In the first, the UV photodissociation spectrum of OClO is recovered by monitoring intensity changes in the pure rotational transition of a spectator molecule (OCS) downstream from the nozzle, revealing a new vibrational structure in the region between 30,000 and 36,000 cm(-1). In the second, the mid-IR vibrational spectrum of acetylene is recorded simply by monitoring a single pure rotational transition of OCS co-expanded with acetylene. The technique may prove particularly fruitful when an excitation process produces product dark states that are not easily probed by conventional spectroscopy. 相似文献

One method of determining the strains on the surface of a metal part is by the use of a birefringent coating. Because of the thickness of the coating, however, the observed fringe order depends not only on the surface strains but also on two other factors, namely, the curvature that the surface undergoes and the variation of strain acrose the thickness of the coating. These thickness effects have already been studied in a paper dealing with one dimensional variations in strain. In the present paper, the solution is extended to a two-dimensional deformation with radial symmetry. An experiment is described in which the surface strains produced by the impact of a bullet on a flat plate are determined from the birefringence of a surface coating taking into account the effects of strain gradients and curvature. The values of surface strain are compared with measurements made by means of a square grid inscribed on the metal surface. A procedure is suggested for determining an unknown surface strain having radial symmetry from the total birefringence of the surface coating when the change in curvature of the metal surface under load is known or can be determined separately. 相似文献

Electrochemical immunosensors have the potential to transform analytical procedures within the food industry by providing highly specific, rapid, and inexpensive determination of pathogens. In this paper, recent advances in this area are outlined. In particular, attention is paid to new methods that have been developed for the modification of working electrode surfaces. Many advances have been related to the use of novel nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, and metallic nanoparticles, often used in conjunction with each other or polymers. The use of these materials has generally provided superior sensor sensitivity. On wet and windy days, the inclined cables of cable-stayed bridges may experience a large amplitude oscillation known as rain-wind-induced vibration (RWIV). It has previously been shown by in situ and wind-tunnel studies that the formation of rain-water accumulations or ‘rivulets’ at approximately the separation points of the external aerodynamic flow field and the resulting effect that these rivulets have on this field may be one of the primary mechanisms for RWIV. A numerical method has been developed to undertake simulations of certain aspects of RWIV, in particular, rivulet formation and evolution. Specifically a two-dimensional model for the evolution of a thin film of water on the outer surface of a horizontal circular cylinder subject to the pressure and shear forces that result from the external flow field is presented. Numerical simulations of the resulting evolution equation using a bespoke pseudo-spectral solver capture the formation of two-dimensional rivulets, the geometry, location and growth rate of which are all in good agreement with previous studies. Examinations of how the distribution and magnitude of aerodynamic loading and the Reynolds number influence the rivulet temporal evolution are undertaken, the results of which indicate that while all three affect the temporal evolution, the distribution of the loading has the greatest effect. 相似文献
