A tandem carbanion addition/carbon-carbon bond cleavage yields alkynyl ketones

Carbanion addition to vinylogous acid triflates triggers carbon-carbon bond cleavage to form alkynyl ketones under mild conditions. Mechanistic factors affecting the cleavage event and its relationship to complementary fragmentations are discussed. A range of tethered keto-alkynes are obtained by a unified approach.     

The Green's function moment method

This paper develops a modified moment method for the numerical solution of two “Pocklington Type” integral equations. The first equation arises from the problem of scalar diffraction through a slot; the second from scattering by a straight, thin-wire. Numerical results and comparison with a more conventional method are given.     

Entanglement of polar symmetric top molecules as candidate qubits

Proposals for quantum computing using rotational states of polar molecules as qubits have previously considered only diatomic molecules. For these the Stark effect is second-order, so a sizable external electric field is required to produce the requisite dipole moments in the laboratory frame. Here we consider use of polar symmetric top molecules. These offer advantages resulting from a first-order Stark effect, which renders the effective dipole moments nearly independent of the field strength. That permits use of much lower external field strengths for addressing sites. Moreover, for a particular choice of qubits, the electric dipole interactions become isomorphous with NMR systems for which many techniques enhancing logic gate operations have been developed. Also inviting is the wider chemical scope, since many symmetric top organic molecules provide options for auxiliary storage qubits in spin and hyperfine structure or in internal rotation states.     

Laser micro- and nanostructuring using femtosecond Bessel beams

We report the generation of femtosecond Bessel beams of conical half-angle 26 degrees using an axicon lens and a beam reduction imaging setup. The generated Bessel beams were applied to the micromachining of nanostructures in glass of length up to 100 μm. The effect of the incident pulse energy on the characteristics of the nano- structures was studied using optical microscopy.     

Higher-order modulation instability in nonlinear fiber optics

We report theoretical, numerical, and experimental studies of higher-order modulation instability in the focusing nonlinear Schr?dinger equation. This higher-order instability arises from the nonlinear superposition of elementary instabilities, associated with initial single breather evolution followed by a regime of complex, yet deterministic, pulse splitting. We analytically describe the process using the Darboux transformation and compare with experiments in optical fiber. We show how a suitably low frequency modulation on a continuous wave field induces higher-order modulation instability splitting with the pulse characteristics at different phases of evolution related by a simple scaling relationship. We anticipate that similar processes are likely to be observed in many other systems including plasmas, Bose-Einstein condensates, and deep water waves.     

Transform-limited spectral compression by self-phase modulation of amplitude-shaped pulses with negative chirp

Spectral compression by self-phase modulation of amplitude- and phase-shaped pulses is demonstrated as superior compared to pulses that have only been phase shaped. We synthesize linearly negatively chirped parabolic pulses, which we send through a nonlinear photonic crystal fiber, in which self-phase modulation compresses the spectrum of the pulses to within 20% of the Fourier transform limit.
