Bound states of a gravitational soliton and a test particle

Classical and quantum bound states of a test particle in the regular gravitational field of a gravitational soliton are investigated. The quantum spectrum is very similar to that of a Newtonian atom, except for the absence ofs orbitals.     

Construction of grand unified models under maximal subalgebras

A construction of grand unified models of the strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions is described based on the transformation properties of the group generators under a maximal subgroup decomposition without recourse to large representation matrices or to the specific algebraic structures of some classical Lie-groups, such as the Clifford algebra associated with the orthogonal groups or the octonionic structure of the exceptional groups. To illustrate the procedure an explicit construction is given of the SU(5) model useful in the discussion of higher rank groups, of SO(10) under the maximal subalgebras SU(2)_L × SU(2)_R × SU(4)_c and SU(5) × U(1)_r and of the exceptional group E₆ under SU(3)_L × SU(3)_R × SU(3)_c and SO(10) × U(1)_t. The construction procedure can be used as well with any classical Lie-group.     

The computed force constants and vibrational spectra of cubane

The geometry, complete harmonic force field, and dipole moment derivatives of cubane, C₈H₈, have been calculated at the Hartree-Fock level using a 4–21 Gaussian basis set. The infrared and Raman spectra of cubane and four deuterated derivatives were calculated and compared with previously observed spectra. A set of five scale factors for the calculated force constants was then derived by least-squares fitting of the fundamental vibrational frequencies calculated from the scaled force field to the frequencies obtained by direct experimental measurement. The resulting scaled quantum-mechanical (SQM) force field, containing 73 unique elements, is believed to give an accurate representation of the harmonic vibrational potential of cubane. In most cases, the spectral assignments previously made from purely empirical considerations were confirmed, but a few corrections are proposed. The only major alteration is for an A_2u mode revised to appear at 1030 cm^?1 in the undeuterated molecule. Coriolis constants and approximate infrared intensities are also calculated.     

Beam-foil mean lifetimes in Kr II obtained from ANDC analysis

Detailed measurements on the 5p ⁴ S ₃ ^2/0 and 5p～' ² D ₅ ^2/0 levels in Kr II are reported. Cascade effects were taken into account with the aid of the arbitrarily normalized decay curve (ANDC) technique. Experimental values are compared to values obtained by other investigators as well as to theoretical values.     

Quenching cross sections of the B3Π+(Ou+) v′ = 14 level of I2 by H2, CO,and CH4

In this work the deexcitation of the B³Π⁺(O_u⁺), v′ = 14 level of I₂ after pulsed laser excitation has been studied. The quenching cross sections by collisions with I₂, H₂, CO, and CH₄ have been measured. The experimental results are 190 ± 14, 2.5 ± 0.3, 15.1 ± 0.4, and 18.0 ± 0.6 Ų, respectively. These values are compatible (within 30%) with the semiempirical scaling law of proportionality with the product of polarizability and the square root of reduced mass.
