Scientist up to the highest level

Dr. Miroslav Kyrš, DrSc. passed away prematurely and unexpectedly in August 2006 at age of 75. He was a leading person of the Czech radiochemistry during the second half of the 20th century and his results have of world-wide impact. His diligence, intelligence and permanent activity led him to be at first a laboratory chief and subsequently for about 25 years to be a chief of the Radiochemical Department of Czech Nuclear Research Institute (NRI) at Řež near Prague.

Strength of cylinder joint adhesively bonded by coupling

Summary A method of joining two metal cylindrical shafts with adhesive coupling is proposed. Two cylindrical shafts with the same diameter are connected by bonding through a cylindrical coupling with epoxy resin. The strength of the shaft joint under tensile loading and torsional loading is investigated analytically and experimentally. The stress and strain distributions of the shaft joint is analyzed by the finite element method. The analyzed strain distributions in the joint are compared with experimental values. The joint strength is predicted by applying the strength laws of shafts, coupling, adhesive layer and adhesive interface between shaft and adhesive coupling. The effects of the coupling dimension on the joint strength are examined. It is shown that the adhesive shaft joint can transfer the load by which the cylindrical shafts are plastically deformed.This paper was refined by the author, K. An Economical Magnetocardiogram System Based on High-To SQUIDs

An economical magnetocardiogram （MCG） system is built in our laboratory. It mainly consists of a MCG data acquisition stage equipped with two high-To superconducting quantum interference device （SQUID） magnetometers, a data processing stage with digital filtering and a one-layer μ-metal magnetically shielded room in conjunction with a high-Tc SQUID based active compensation. Experimental results show that a noise level of pico-tesla in MCG profiles, which is necessary for clinical applications, may be achieved with the system. Moreover, stable and convenient operations of the system are demonstrated with simulating MCG measurements.     

Carathéodory's method for a class of second order differential equations on the half-line

The method of equivalent variational methods, originally due to Carathéodory for free problems in the calculus of variations is extended to investigate boundary value problems for a class of second order differential equations on the half-line. Some applications are presented to illustrate the potential of this method.     

Parton-hadron duality in event generators

The validity of local parton-hadron duality within the framework of HERWIG and JETSET event generators is investigated. We concentrate one ⁺ e ^– annihilations in LEP 2 energy range as these interactions provide theoretically the cleanest condition for the discussion of this concept. We conclude that the concept of local parton-hadron duality is not valid in either of the two generators considered.     

Thermophoresis in laminar flow over cold inclined plates with variable properties

This paper deals with the analysis of two dimensional laminar thermophoretic flow over inclined plates. Cold wall conditions are assumed and the governing equations are solved by a finite difference marching technique. Results for the hydrodynamic, thermal and particle concentration boundary layers are obtained over a wide range of parameters. Special emphasis is placed on the external aerosol particle deposition process.
