Styrene emulsion polymerization: Particle-size distributions

Data are presented on the time evolution of particle-size distributions (PSDs) in seeded and ab initio styrene emulsion polymerization systems. Initiation was by chemical reagent (potassium persulfate) or γ-radiation. The unswollen PSDs at various times during interval II of the polymerization were obtained by direct measurement of calibrated electron micrographs. Experimental results were fitted with the equations that describe the time evolution of an initial PSD. Analytic solutions to these equations that allow for entry, exit, and propagation of free radicals were obtained. The values of the rate coefficients for these processes used to fit the experimental data were in excellent agreement with those obtained from dilatometric kinetics experiments.     

Phosphoryl chloride induced ring contraction of 1,4-benzodiazepinones to chloromethylquinazolines

A ring contraction of 1,4-benzodiazepin-2-one to 2-chloromethylquinazoline in phosphoryl chloride is described. The intermediacy of an aziridinoquinazoline is proposed.     

Synthesis of (pyridinyl)-1,2,4-triazolo[4,3-a]pyridines

Methods for the synthesis of (pyridinyl)-1,2,4-triazolo[4,3-a]pyridines were developed. The principal route to the required intermediate 2-chloropyridines was based on rearrangements of mono N-oxides of 2,2′-bipyridine, 2,3′-bipyridine, 3,3′-bipyridine, 2,4′-bipyridine and 4,4′-bipyridine with phosphorus oxychloride. Reaction of 3,3′-bipyridine 1-oxide or 2,2′-bipyridine 1-oxide with phosphorus oxychloride gave mixtures of chloro isomers. Reaction with acetic anhydride, 3,3′-bipyridine 1-oxide and 2,2′-bipyridine 1-oxide gave exclusively [3,3′-bipyridine]-2(1H)-one and [2,2′-bipyridine]-6(1H)-one, respectively. 1,2,4-Triazolo[4,3-a]pyridines with pyridinyl groups at the 5,6,7 and 8 positions were synthesized.     

On the calculation of induced electric and magnetic moments of atoms and molecules

We present a many-electron method for calculating first and second order perturbed wavefunctions due to external electric and magnetic fields, which identifies the important correlation effects for the response function a priori and calculates them variationally. It is accurate, economical and applicable to ground and excited states with the same ease. Thus, it presents a useful alternative to the well-known coupled Hartree-Fock methods. As an application of this method, we calculate the static electric dipole polarizability of the Be ground state. We find α_d = 5.49 ų in agreement with recent extensive calculations.     

Carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance studies of coumarin and related compounds

Fourier-transform ¹³C NMR spectra of nine coumarinoid compounds of medicinal interest are reported. All of the carbon resonances are assigned with the aid of various spectral techniques and stable isotopic labeling. The substituent effects on the chemical shifts in several systems are also discussed.     

The absolute stereochemistry of several cis-dihydrodiols microbially produced from substituted benzenes

The absolute stereochemistry of a series of 3-substituted cis-dihydrodiols obtained by microbial oxidation of toluene, ethylbenzene, chlorobenzene, and biphenyl has been assigned from chemical and spectrophotometric studies. ?-Halogenated toluenes also have been investigated as substrates in these oxidations, and the corresponding cis-dihydrodiols isolated. Implications from the observation that some of the cis-dihydrodiols are racemic are discussed. Oxidation of an olefin, (±)-3-methylcyclohexene, by these microorganisms leads only to cis-diols whose absolute stereochemistry about the hydroxyl-bearing carbons is the same as that found for the cis-dihydrodiols formed from the aromatic substrates.
